No iPhone color is proven to hide scratches or fingerprints best: Apple publishes no color-by-color comparison. As a practical visual rule of thumb—not a tested result—a light or muted back may make small marks less conspicuous than a very dark one. The phone’s surface and side band matter too, so compare the exact model and finish rather than choosing by color name alone.
What color should you choose?
If your main concern is how small marks look, compare light or muted finishes with very dark finishes in person under ordinary lighting. A lower-contrast appearance may make some marks less noticeable, but this is a visual heuristic, not a guarantee or a measured Apple finding. The consulted Apple specifications list finishes and materials; they do not rank colors by scratch visibility, fingerprint visibility, or mark rates.
For example, Apple lists the 2025 iPhone 17 in Black, White, Mist Blue, Sage, and Lavender. The phone has an aluminum design and color-infused glass back. The iPhone 16 is listed in Black, White, Pink, Teal, and Ultramarine, with an aluminum design and color-infused glass back on its colored finishes. Those specifications do not establish that one of these colors resists or conceals marks better than another. Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications and iPhone 16 specifications identify the options and materials.

Compare the back and the side band separately
Color is only one part of what you see. Back material and surface finish can differ by model and generation, and the side band is a separate surface. Apple’s model-identification guide describes textured matte glass or textured matte Ceramic Shield on various iPhones, including textured matte glass for iPhone 17. Do not assume that a finish behaves the same across models just because the color name is similar. Apple’s model-identification page can help you check which model you have.

Fingerprints and skin oils may also show differently on the back and frame. Apple says iPhones have a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, but normal use wears it down. Separately, Apple notes that skin oils may temporarily alter the outside band color on iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. That specific guidance is not a claim about every iPhone finish. Apple’s iPhone cleaning guidance covers both the coating and the named Pro models.
A practical way to compare finishes
- Check the exact model. Look up its listed colors, back material, and finish; availability and materials vary by generation.
- Compare the back colors in person. View light or muted options alongside very dark ones under the kind of lighting where you usually use your phone. Look for how visible small marks seem, not for a promise that any color will hide them.
- Inspect the side band separately. Consider its material and finish, and whether fingerprints or oil-related changes on the frame would bother you.
- Factor in your case. A compatible case can cover much of the phone’s finish, but check compatibility for the exact model. Apple provides care guidance for several case materials, including silicone, clear, woven, and leather. Apple’s product-cleaning guide includes that case guidance.
- Choose based on the trade-off you notice. If the back is usually covered, its color may matter less to you than the exposed frame or the case. If you use the phone without a case, judge the back and sides as separate surfaces.
Check whether a mark is a scratch before trying to remove it
Some marks that look like scratches can be material transfer from objects such as denim or items in a pocket. Apple says transfer on textured glass or Ceramic Shield can often be removed. For routine cleaning, Apple recommends a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. It warns that cleaning products and abrasive materials can diminish the oleophobic coating and may scratch the phone, so avoid abrasive pads, polishing compounds, and unverified solvents. For the specified iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro models, Apple says wiping the outside band with that cloth restores its original look after temporary oil-related color changes.
