Do not select a service from a feature list alone. A useful evaluation includes ordinary pages, long lazy-loaded pages, animated layouts, mobile views and consent or application states that matter to your product.
HTTPS protects API credentials in transit. Keep access keys server-side, use the provider’s documented authentication method, and treat query-string keys as secrets because application logs, browser history or proxies can expose them. ScreenshotOne explicitly warns that HTTP can expose API keys, authorization headers, cookies and other sensitive data while they are in transit.
Start with the capture you need
Write down the required output before comparing vendors. A screenshot API may return image bytes, raw HTML or a PDF, and those are different integration problems.
Viewport and device behavior
Compare viewport width and height, mobile or desktop emulation, device-pixel ratio, clipping and element capture. Device emulation reproduces browser settings; it is not a photograph taken by a physical phone. Define the exact viewport and pixel density your tests will use so every candidate receives the same request.

Format and image quality
Check PNG, JPEG and WebP support, quality controls, transparency and resizing. PNG is suitable for text-heavy UI and lossless archival images; JPEG is smaller for photographic pages; WebP can reduce transfer size when your consumers support it. Confirm whether the response is image bytes, HTML or another content type before writing your downloader.
Full-page versus a region
Full-page capture must deal with scrolling, sticky elements, lazy images and pages whose height changes while scripts run. If you need only a component, prefer an element or selector capture when available. It avoids producing a huge image and makes visual comparisons less sensitive to unrelated page content.
Use HTTPS and handle credentials safely
Transport
Use an https:// endpoint for every request. ScreenshotOne documents its capture endpoint at https://api.screenshotone.com/take and supports GET and POST requests. Its documentation says access keys can be supplied as a query parameter, in a POST body or with an X-Access-Key header.
HTTPS encrypts the connection, but it does not make a key safe to expose in client-side JavaScript. Send requests from your server or a controlled worker, store keys in a secret manager or environment variable, and redact authorization values from logs. If your provider offers signed requests, compare that option with a plain key.

POST size and payload design

Rendering features that affect real pages
Lazy loading and long documents
Ask how a service loads content that appears only after scrolling. ScreenshotOne documents scrolling to load lazy images, a maximum full-page height and a section-based capture algorithm. The default algorithm generally stretches the viewport; on some complex or animated pages that can produce rendering problems. Section-based capture can help, but additional waiting and tuning can increase latency.
Animation and dynamic content
Determine whether you can wait for a CSS selector, a fixed delay or network idle, and whether motion reduction is available. Motion reduction is best effort, not a guarantee that every animation stops. Test pages with carousels, web fonts, client-side data fetching, sticky headers and infinite scroll. Decide what “ready” means for your application and encode that condition instead of relying only on a large arbitrary delay.
Consent banners and overlays
Cookie dialogs, newsletters and chat widgets can obscure the page you intend to archive. Test whether the API can click or hide a selector, run custom JavaScript or apply custom CSS before capture. Also check whether a provider can block advertising, trackers or selected resource types without breaking the page.
Compare hosted APIs with self-hosted Playwright
Hosted service
A hosted API runs browser capture behind an endpoint. You avoid provisioning browsers, patching operating-system dependencies, managing concurrency and collecting screenshots from workers. In exchange, you must evaluate the provider’s limits, regions, retention, privacy terms, support and failure reporting.
Self-hosted browser automation
Microsoft Playwright exposes a fullPage screenshot option for the full scrollable page. Running it yourself gives control over browser versions, network policy, cookies, retries and storage, but your team operates that infrastructure: browser processes, queues, sandboxing, scaling, patching, observability and incident recovery. The existence of the API does not prove that self-hosting is cheaper or more reliable for your workload.

Decision questions
- Do you need control over browser binaries, outbound networking or data residency?
- Can your team maintain a secure, scalable browser worker fleet?
- Would a managed endpoint reduce operational work enough to justify its per-request cost?
- Do your pages require custom browser logic that a hosted API cannot express?
A practical, repeatable evaluation
- Assemble a test set. Include an ordinary page, a long page with lazy-loaded images, an animated page, a mobile layout and pages containing the consent or dynamic states your product captures.
- Fix the specification. Record viewport dimensions, device emulation, pixel density, output format, quality, capture region and acceptable wait time.
- Run repeated requests. Send the same URLs and options to each candidate. Record elapsed time, HTTP status, response type, image dimensions and whether content is missing or duplicated.
- Inspect visual edge cases. Look for clipped sticky headers, blank sections, unloaded images, animation frames, font substitutions and incorrect full-page height.
- Exercise failure paths. Test an invalid option, an unreachable URL, a page that times out and a request over the documented limit. Verify that your application can distinguish a provider error from a valid image.
- Review operations and procurement. Compare quotas, price at your forecast volume, latency, retention, privacy, regional coverage, support and any uptime or service commitments. Recheck current vendor documentation and contract terms immediately before purchase.
- Compare self-hosting. Estimate engineering and infrastructure work for Playwright, including browser updates, queue capacity, monitoring, security patches and on-call response.

Performance, reliability and cost checks
Latency
Measure end-to-end time, not just browser render time. Include DNS, page loading, waits, image transfer and your own storage. Repeat tests at the concurrency you expect; a fast single request may queue under production load.

Reliability
Track successful images separately from HTTP responses. A 200 response with a blank or incomplete page is not a successful capture. Record provider error codes, timeout causes and whether retries create duplicate charges. Use bounded exponential backoff for transient failures and an idempotency strategy for asynchronous jobs where supported.
Cost model
Calculate requests per month, average image size, retries, PDF jobs and peak concurrency. Include storage, egress and engineering time for a self-hosted option. Confirm what counts as billable, how cache hits are treated, whether failed renders are charged and whether limits are hard or soft.

401 or 403 authentication errors
Check that the key is present, unmodified and sent through the documented header, query parameter or body field. Verify the request is HTTPS and that a proxy has not stripped the header. Rotate a key that may have appeared in logs.
Invalid-option or validation errors
Start with a minimal URL and viewport request, then add options one at a time. Check spelling, data types and mutually exclusive settings. Preserve the complete error response in a redacted log.

Blank, clipped or incomplete output
Wait for a meaningful selector or network idle, allow fonts and images to load, and test a section-based full-page algorithm if available. Disable problematic animation, increase the wait only as much as needed, and inspect whether the target page itself blocks automated browsers.
Timeouts
Distinguish a slow origin from an API queue or an overly short client timeout. Set a client timeout longer than the provider’s expected render window, but enforce a maximum so workers do not hang indefinitely. Retry only transient failures.
Oversized requests
Move large HTML or Markdown from the query string into a JSON POST body. For ScreenshotOne, keep the body below its documented 100 MiB maximum.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I send screenshot API requests from browser JavaScript?
No. Keep the API key on a server or worker. Browser code can expose keys to visitors, extensions and network tooling even when the request uses HTTPS.

Is a device-emulated screenshot the same as a real phone capture?
No. Emulation changes browser settings such as viewport and user-agent behavior; it does not capture a physical handset with its hardware, network or operating-system rendering.

Use enough pages to represent your workload: at minimum an ordinary page, a long lazy-loaded page, an animated page, a mobile layout and any consent or application state that affects your product.
