The right HTML-to-PDF API is the one whose rendering model, input method, pagination controls, security terms and failure handling match your documents. Start by deciding whether your source is a public URL, generated HTML, or an uploaded bundle. Then run a proof of concept with production-like files—fonts, remote assets, JavaScript, long tables, page breaks and failure cases. Feature lists from vendors such as PDFCrowd and DocRaptor are useful for narrowing the field, but the available documentation does not establish that either is faster, more reliable or higher quality for every workload.

Start with the document and integration model

Your first decision is not the vendor name; it is how the service will receive and render the document.

Public or authenticated URL

A URL-based job is convenient when your application already publishes a print-ready page. Confirm whether the renderer can reach private pages, follow redirects, authenticate, load assets from your network and wait for client-side rendering. A URL also creates a consistency risk: the page can change between generation and capture unless you use immutable content or a signed, short-lived route.

HTML generated in your application

Passing an HTML string gives you deterministic input and avoids exposing a page on the public internet. You must package CSS, fonts, images and other resources in a way the service can access. Check whether the API accepts inline data, multipart uploads, a ZIP/archive or only a URL.

Uploaded files and archives

PDFCrowd documentation describes URL, HTML-text and uploaded HTML-file/archive inputs. Its documented interface is a versioned HTTP POST using form fields, with PDF bytes returned after a successful request—not a JSON request/response workflow. That distinction affects your HTTP client, request-size limits, streaming strategy and error handling.

DocRaptor documents an API-key-authenticated document-generation API. Before implementation, verify the current endpoint, authentication method, request schema and response behavior in its API reference; those details can change.

Match the renderer to your HTML and CSS

Browser-style rendering versus print-oriented engines

PDFCrowd documents controls for page size, orientation, margins, print CSS, custom CSS and JavaScript, plus readiness settings. DocRaptor documents a Prince-based pipeline and Prince-specific options with version mappings. These are materially different rendering models. CSS that looks correct in Chromium is not automatically identical in a Prince-based workflow.

Build a small fixture set before committing:

  • A page using your production web fonts, including a fallback case.
  • Images and charts loaded from the same domains used in production.
  • JavaScript that inserts data or waits for an API response.
  • Long tables that must repeat headings or split across pages.
  • Forced page breaks, widows and orphans, footnotes, headers and footers.
  • Right-to-left text, unusual Unicode characters and your longest realistic paragraphs.

Render each fixture with the exact options you plan to use, then inspect the PDF visually and with a text extractor or PDF validator. Vendor feature descriptions are not comparative test results.

JavaScript readiness

Ask how the service decides that a page is ready. A fixed delay can waste time or still capture an incomplete page. A network-idle rule can hang on analytics or streaming connections. A selector-based condition is often more deterministic when your application can add a “rendered” marker. Test all three behaviors against pages that fail, redirect or never finish loading.

Fonts and remote resources

Confirm outbound network policy, TLS requirements, DNS behavior and whether resources are fetched from the service’s region. For repeatable invoices and statements, embedding fonts and images or hosting immutable assets is safer than depending on third-party URLs. Record the font files and CSS used in your test so a later renderer upgrade can be compared against a known baseline.

Check page layout and specialist PDF requirements

Everyday business documents

Invoices, receipts and shipping documents generally need exact paper size, orientation, margins, a dependable header/footer and predictable page breaks. Verify whether margins apply to the printable area, how background graphics are handled and how a table behaves when a row is taller than one page.

Long reports and books

Long-form documents expose pagination differences quickly. Test chapter breaks, running headers, page counters, table-of-contents links, footnotes, keep-together rules and repeated table headings. A service that handles a one-page invoice may still require substantial CSS changes for a 200-page report.

Accessible or archival output

PDFCrowd product and reference pages describe tagged PDF and PDF/A options. DocRaptor’s product material lists accessibility and advanced page-layout capabilities. Treat those labels as claims to verify, not as proof of conformance. If accessibility or archival status is contractual, validate generated files with an appropriate PDF/UA or PDF/A validator and document the exact profile, metadata and failures.

Security features

PDFCrowd documentation describes options including watermarks and password protection. Determine whether encryption, permissions, metadata and watermarking occur before or after other transformations, and whether the provider stores source HTML or generated PDFs. Do not assume a security option implies a particular compliance certification.

Run a production-like proof of concept

  1. Collect representative inputs. Include your smallest and largest documents, authenticated pages, missing assets, slow scripts, multilingual text and intentionally broken HTML.
  2. Freeze the test environment. Record HTML, CSS, fonts, asset URLs, renderer/version information and every request option.
  3. Generate PDFs repeatedly. Look for nondeterministic charts, timestamps, ads, random IDs and race conditions.
  4. Inspect content and structure. Check page count, text extraction, hyperlinks, bookmarks, tags, metadata, image resolution, file size and archival/accessibility validation where required.
  5. Exercise failures. Abort a request, exceed a timeout, return a 404 asset, send invalid credentials and submit oversized input. Record status codes, error bodies and whether a retry is safe.
  6. Measure your workload. Capture end-to-end latency, conversion time, queue delay, concurrency and the percentage of jobs requiring a retry. These are your measurements, not vendor-wide benchmarks.

Use a safe HTTP integration pattern

Because endpoint URLs and request fields are versioned and can change, copy the current endpoint and field names from the provider’s API reference rather than hard-coding an undocumented URL. The following pattern shows how to send form data and save PDF bytes; set the endpoint and credentials as environment variables in your deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

cURL form POST

curl --fail-with-body --request POST "$PDF_API_ENDPOINT"
  --header "Authorization: Bearer $PDF_API_KEY"
  --form-string "html=@document.html"
  --form-string "page_size=A4"
  --form-string "margin_top=20mm"
  --form-string "margin_right=15mm"
  --form-string "margin_bottom=20mm"
  --form-string "margin_left=15mm"
  --output document.pdf

Use the provider’s documented authentication and field names if they differ. Check the response content type before treating the body as a PDF, and retain the error body when the request fails.

Python request handling

import os
import requests

endpoint = os.environ["PDF_API_ENDPOINT"]
key = os.environ["PDF_API_KEY"]
with open("document.html", "rb") as html_file:
    response = requests.post(
        endpoint,
        headers={"Authorization": f"Bearer {key}"},
        files={"html": ("document.html", html_file, "text/html")},
        data={
            "page_size": "A4",
            "margin_top": "20mm",
            "margin_right": "15mm",
            "margin_bottom": "20mm",
            "margin_left": "15mm",
        },
        timeout=90,
    )
response.raise_for_status()
if not response.headers.get("content-type", "").lower().startswith("application/pdf"):
    raise RuntimeError(f"Unexpected content type: {response.headers.get('content-type')}")
with open("document.pdf", "wb") as pdf_file:
    pdf_file.write(response.content)

Node.js fetch

import { readFile } from "node:fs/promises";

const endpoint = process.env.PDF_API_ENDPOINT;
const key = process.env.PDF_API_KEY;
const form = new FormData();
form.append("html", new Blob([await readFile("document.html")], { type: "text/html" }), "document.html");
form.append("page_size", "A4");
form.append("margin_top", "20mm");
form.append("margin_right", "15mm");
form.append("margin_bottom", "20mm");
form.append("margin_left", "15mm");
const response = await fetch(endpoint, {
  method: "POST",
  headers: { Authorization: `Bearer ${key}` },
  body: form,
});
if (!response.ok) throw new Error(`PDF conversion failed: ${response.status} ${await response.text()}`);
const type = response.headers.get("content-type") || "";
if (!type.toLowerCase().startsWith("application/pdf")) throw new Error(`Unexpected content type: ${type}`);
await Bun.write("document.pdf", await response.arrayBuffer());

For Node runtimes without Bun, write the returned ArrayBuffer with the runtime’s standard filesystem API. Never log API keys or document contents.

Design retries, queues and cost controls

Retries

Retry only transient failures such as connection resets or documented 5xx responses. Use exponential backoff and an idempotency key when the provider supports one. Do not blindly retry authentication errors, invalid HTML or deterministic 4xx responses.

Concurrency and timeouts

Set a client timeout longer than your largest legitimate render, but cap it so a stuck JavaScript page cannot consume workers forever. A queue with bounded concurrency protects your application from traffic spikes and makes provider rate limits visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cost and procurement

Calculate cost from your actual mix of page counts, retries, asynchronous jobs and asset-hosting requirements. Ask whether failed jobs, cache hits, storage, overages and support are billed. Recheck plan limits and prices immediately before purchase; the reviewed pages did not establish current figures for PDFCrowd or DocRaptor.

Troubleshoot common conversion failures

Blank or partially rendered PDF

Usually the renderer captured before JavaScript finished, could not reach an asset, or encountered a script error. Add a deterministic readiness marker, inspect browser-console or network diagnostics if offered, and test with assets embedded or hosted on an allowlisted origin.

Missing fonts or altered line wrapping

Verify that font files load from the conversion environment and that the CSS declares correct weights. Include explicit fallbacks and compare the renderer’s font/version after upgrades.

Tables split incorrectly

Use print-specific CSS, repeat table headers, avoid oversized rows and test the provider’s page-break behavior. A different rendering engine may require different break rules.

Request times out

Look for never-ending network connections, third-party trackers, slow APIs and very large images. Remove nonessential resources, make data available in the HTML payload, choose a documented readiness condition and move long jobs to an asynchronous workflow if available.

PDF is returned but fails validation

Check whether the selected tagged or archival option maps to the profile you need. Validate with an independent tool, then correct metadata, tags, color profiles or embedded fonts rather than relying on the option’s label.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a universal replacement for an HTML-string document engine. It is a practical alternative when your source is a reachable web page and you need a clean screenshot or PDF capture. Its capture process accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Or skip the browser setup:

For a URL capture, make one request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for PDF and capture options. You can also use its 63 options for full-page capture, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device and viewport settings, retina scale, custom CSS or JavaScript, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture and usage reporting. One thousand screenshots per month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Make the final choice

Choose the service that passes your own fixtures and fits your data path. PDFCrowd is worth evaluating when its documented URL, HTML-text and upload inputs, form-based HTTP API and page controls match your integration. DocRaptor is worth evaluating when its Prince-based rendering and specialist layout or accessibility capabilities fit your documents. In either case, confirm current API versions, quotas, support, security, retention, geography and contractual terms, then keep a regression corpus so renderer changes are caught before customers see them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which HTML-to-PDF API should I use?

Use the provider whose renderer and input model pass your production-like fixture set. Documentation alone cannot establish a universal winner.

Should I send a URL or raw HTML?

Send a URL when your page is already hosted and reachable by the service; send HTML or an archive when you need deterministic, private input and control over packaged assets.

How can I verify PDF/A or accessibility claims?

Generate files with the required options and validate them with an independent PDF/A or PDF/UA validator. A feature label is not proof of conformance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can ScreenshotNeo convert arbitrary HTML strings?

ScreenshotNeo is designed around reachable web-page capture. For arbitrary HTML strings, use a document-conversion API whose documented input model accepts that payload.
