REST, GraphQL, OData, and Falcor describe different kinds of API contracts, so they are not four interchangeable protocols. REST is an architectural style; GraphQL is a schema-based query language and execution model; OData standardizes conventions for REST-based data services; and Falcor lets clients access a virtual JSON Graph by path. Choose based on the data model clients need, how much control they should have over response shape, and the standards and operational practices your team can support.

What is the difference between REST, GraphQL, OData, and Falcor?

Approach What it defines How clients express data needs
REST An architectural style defined by constraints for networked systems. Through the resource-oriented interface designed by the service. REST itself does not prescribe a universal query syntax or response format.
GraphQL A query language and execution model built around a service schema. By selecting fields, including nested fields on related objects, in a query.
OData A standardized protocol and conventions for REST-based data services. Through the service’s OData conventions, including its URL conventions and representations.
Falcor A JavaScript library and data-access approach that represents domain data as a JSON Graph. By requesting paths into the graph using operations such as get, set, and call.

The categories differ: REST describes an architectural style, while GraphQL, OData, and Falcor describe more specific ways to define or access data. A comparison is most useful when it focuses on the contract a client sees rather than treating all four as competing wire protocols.

What does each approach specify?

REST: architectural constraints, not a JSON format

Roy T. Fielding defined REST through a set of architectural constraints. In the abstract of his dissertation, he says those constraints, “when applied as a whole,” emphasize scalability of component interactions, generality of interfaces, independent deployment, and intermediary components that can reduce interaction latency, enforce security, and encapsulate legacy systems. That is an architectural rationale, not a measured performance guarantee. Read Fielding’s dissertation.

Using HTTP and JSON does not by itself make an API RESTful. To assess a service, look at its resource model and whether it follows REST’s constraints as a whole, rather than assuming that every HTTP endpoint qualifies.

GraphQL: a typed schema clients can query

The September 2025 GraphQL specification describes GraphQL as a query language and execution engine for describing and performing data-model capabilities and requirements in client-server applications. A GraphQL service defines a schema listing the types and fields clients may query; requests are validated and executed against that schema. See the GraphQL specification.

Clients choose fields in a query and can select nested fields on related objects. GraphQL defines query, mutation, and subscription operation types, but a service must support queries while mutations and subscriptions are optional. The available operations depend on that service’s schema and implementation. Learn about GraphQL operations and queries and GraphQL schemas.

Field selection can make it easier for a client to request related data in one operation, but it does not guarantee faster responses or simpler server operation. Service owners still need to plan authorization, schema governance, resolver behavior, and controls for expensive queries.

OData: conventions for REST-based data services

OData, or the Open Data Protocol, is a standardized approach for REST-based data services. Its documentation identifies version 4.01 and provides materials for the protocol, URL conventions, JSON representation, and Common Schema Language. OData.org says the protocol has been standardized by OASIS and approved as an ISO/IEC International Standard. See OData’s documentation.

OData does not replace REST with an unrelated architectural style. It gives teams common conventions for querying, representing, and modeling REST-based data services. For implementation or procurement decisions, verify the specific OData version and applicable OASIS or ISO publication against the requirements.

Falcor: paths into a virtual JSON Graph

Falcor models application domain data as a JSON Graph, a JSON convention that can express relationships using references. Clients request subsets of that virtual graph through paths and use the abstract operations get, set, and call. Read Falcor’s JSON Graph documentation and its data-source documentation.

A Falcor Router matches requested paths and can follow graph references to retrieve related values within a request. Netflix’s documentation describes the Router as an abstraction over a service layer or REST API; it presents Falcor as middleware for communication between application layers, not as a substitute for an application server, database, or MVC framework. Read about Falcor Router and what Falcor is.

GraphQL and Falcor both address client data access, but their contracts differ: GraphQL exposes a query language over a schema, while Falcor exposes paths into a JSON Graph through its operation model. The project documentation establishes how Falcor is designed; it does not, by itself, establish current maintenance status or present-day production use.

How do response shape and related data compare?

GraphQL gives clients explicit field selection in a query. Falcor lets clients request paths into a graph and can follow references between values. With REST and OData, interactions commonly center on resources and service conventions; the particular response shape and related-resource behavior depend on how the service is designed and, for OData, the version and representation in use.

These distinctions are about the interface contract, not a guaranteed number of network requests or a performance ranking. A system’s endpoints, server implementation, client behavior, and operational controls all affect the result.

Which API approach should you choose?

Choose or evaluate When it may fit What to verify
REST constraints Your system benefits from a resource-oriented interface and can follow the architectural style as a whole. Whether the service follows the constraints rather than merely using HTTP and JSON; how clients navigate resources and related data.
GraphQL Clients need schema-governed selection of fields across related data. Schema ownership, authorization, resolver behavior, query-cost controls, and which operation types the service actually supports.
OData Shared, standardized conventions for querying and modeling REST-based data services are important. Whether the documented version and its protocol, URL, representation, and schema conventions meet interoperability requirements.
Falcor A path-oriented virtual JSON Graph matches the application’s data model and tooling. Whether the library and its Router fit the existing service layer, and whether the project’s current support meets your team’s needs.

Before deciding, map the actual clients and service boundaries, then assess authorization, observability, caching, team expertise, and long-term support. These are engineering decision criteria, not evidence that one approach is universally faster, cheaper, or better.
