Try a sound you find pleasant and clearly melodic, then judge it by two things: whether it wakes you reliably and how jarring it feels when you wake. Research offers promising but limited support for melodic alarms; it does not identify one best sound or prove that a gradual volume increase prevents startling.
What the evidence says about alarm sounds
There is no established best alarm sound for adults. A 2020 systematic review by McFarlane and colleagues included 12 studies selected from 341 records and concluded that evidence was insufficient for firm conclusions about alarm types and voice signals for adults awakened abruptly. The review found some positive results for music in non-emergency adult waking, especially preferred popular music and alarms with melodic qualities. Read the systematic review.
One questionnaire study asked 50 people about their usual waking sounds and perceived sleep inertia—the groggy, slowed-down feeling some people experience after waking. Sound type and how participants felt about their sound were not significantly associated with sleep inertia. However, sounds participants rated as melodic were associated with reports of reduced perceived sleep inertia, while sounds rated neutral were associated with reports of increased perceived sleep inertia. This is an association from self-reports, not proof that melody caused the difference. Read the PLOS ONE study.
A separate ecological study found better immediate vigilance after a musically melodic, rhythmic alarm than after a metronomic comparison tone without melody and with a restrained rhythmic contour. That result makes melody and rhythm reasonable qualities to try, but it does not establish a best genre or guarantee that the same sound will help every listener. Read the melody-and-rhythm study.

Compare sounds by how they work for you
| Sound quality | What the evidence suggests | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Pleasant, clearly melodic | Melodic qualities have promising but limited links to perceived sleep inertia and immediate vigilance; they are not a proven solution for everyone. | Try a tune you find pleasant, then assess both reliable waking and how jarring it feels. |
| Metronomic or minimally melodic | In one ecological study, a melodic, rhythmic alarm performed better for immediate vigilance than a metronomic comparison tone. | Use it as a comparison if you prefer a simple tone; individual results may differ. |
| Personally preferred sound | The review reported positive findings for preferred popular music, but the questionnaire study did not find a significant association between participants’ feelings toward their usual sound and sleep inertia. | Preference can guide your choice, but do not assume that liking a sound alone will make it more effective. |
| Gradually increasing volume | A 2024 multimodal bedroom study used audio that rose over two minutes, but it also changed room temperature. The effect of gradual sound alone was not established. | If your device offers this setting, treat it as a personal preference to test, not a proven way to prevent startling. |
Choose and adjust your alarm
- Start with a sound you find tolerable. A clearly melodic sound is a reasonable first choice based on the limited findings, but there is no established winning genre, pitch, or volume.
- Check that it wakes you reliably. A pleasant sound is not useful if you sleep through it. Keep reliability alongside comfort when deciding whether to use it.
- Notice how waking feels. Over several ordinary mornings, pay attention to whether the sound feels jarring and whether you feel especially groggy or slow immediately afterward. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what you prefer.
- Experiment with volume settings if available. You can try a quieter start or a gradual increase if your device supports it. Evidence does not establish a particular ramp duration or show that gradual volume by itself prevents startling.
Why emergency-alarm findings do not settle the choice
Some findings discussed in the 2020 review favored low-pitch alarm signals or voice warnings for children in emergency-awakening scenarios. That is a different setting and goal from an adult’s everyday morning alarm. It does not justify treating low-pitch tones or voice warnings as a settled prescription for ordinary adult waking. The review explains the evidence and its limits.
