Confirm how it verifies speaker consent, what rights it receives in recordings and voice models, whether commercial use is allowed, how sharing and deletion work, and whether synthetic audio must be disclosed. A provider’s permission to use generated output does not necessarily settle its rights to your uploaded audio or the voice model built from it.
Start with the exact contract that applies
Voice-generation services may offer consumer apps, APIs, partner models and region-specific terms. Those documents can differ, so comparisons are useful only when their scope is explicit. The examples below are not a universal provider ranking: ElevenLabs’ cited terms are for non-EEA users, Speechify’s consent and disclosure requirements are for its AI Voice API, and Adobe’s product page describes both its Firefly Speech Model and an ElevenLabs partner model.
Before uploading audio or publishing output, identify the product and model, the plan, your region, and any API or enterprise agreement that applies. Read the current terms for that specific combination.
Compare the terms that determine consent and rights

Document consent before you upload someone’s voice
Get permission from the actual speaker and keep a record that identifies the agreed use. A platform accepting an upload does not establish that you have the necessary rights, and a checkbox is not the same as provider-verified consent.

Consent controls vary by service
ElevenLabs says its Professional Voice Clone flow is limited to the account holder’s own voice and requires verification. Its help page says another person’s consent does not let an account holder create a Professional Voice Clone of that person; the voice owner can create and verify their own clone, then privately share it. See ElevenLabs’ Professional Voice Clone guidance.
Speechify’s AI Voice API Supplemental Terms, updated June 10, 2024, require audio from a consenting speaker directly contracted by the customer, with explicit written consent. They also put responsibility for obtaining necessary rights and permissions on the customer. These are API-specific terms, not a statement of requirements for every Speechify product.
Do not mistake self-attestation for verification
A Consumer Reports assessment of six voice-cloning companies described self-attestation in the flows it examined and cautioned that this safeguard is not foolproof. That is a dated assessment of those examined services and flows, not a description of every provider’s current controls. Read what the particular product actually verifies.

Read the input license separately from output rights
Terms can let you retain rights in the input and output while granting the provider a separate license to use the content. ElevenLabs’ non-EEA Terms of Service say users retain rights in input and output as between the parties, subject to the terms. They also grant ElevenLabs a license to use content, including voice, to provide and improve services and develop products. The terms describe that license as perpetual, irrevocable, nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide and sublicensable.

That is a model-deletion option; it does not, by itself, establish that every copy or category of input is erased on the same schedule. Check the exact deletion language and ask the provider about any retention that matters to your use.
Confirm commercial permission for the model and plan
“Commercially safe” or “commercial rights included” is not a blanket answer for every product, plan, region or source voice. Check the applicable terms and make sure you have rights to the voice and any source material.

ElevenLabs
ElevenLabs says its free plan does not include a commercial license and cannot be used for commercial purposes. Its publishing guidance says commercial use of output depends on holding necessary intellectual-property rights and complying with applicable law, its terms and its Prohibited Use Policy. The policy assigns customers responsibility for legal compliance and use classifications and prohibits specified harmful or unlawful uses. Adobe Firefly
Adobe’s Firefly AI Voice Generator page describes the Firefly Speech Model as trained on licensed and public-domain content and calls its output commercially safe for professional projects. The page also lists an ElevenLabs partner model, so identify which model generated the audio rather than applying a Firefly-model claim to all options. Adobe’s Generative AI Feature Licensing Terms say customers retain rights in input and own output, subject to the terms. Its Generative AI User Guidelines prohibit uses that violate third-party copyright, privacy, publicity or other rights. Check the current terms for your model and plan.

LOVO
LOVO describes its service as offering users rights to created content, including commercial rights. That general statement does not resolve every plan’s scope or conditions. Review the LOVO service information and its legal, commercial-rights and ethics help section, then confirm the terms for the plan you intend to use.

Check who can use a shared voice model
Sharing a model can expand access beyond the person who created it. ElevenLabs’ Voice Library Addendum, last updated March 6, 2026, says that making a User Voice Model available in its Voice Library authorizes other users to access and use it through that service. It also requires the model to be based on the sharer’s own voice and the sharer to have appropriate rights and permissions.
ElevenLabs’ help material describes private sharing of a verified Professional Voice Clone. Before sharing any model, find out who can generate output with it, whether it will be publicly listed, and how access can be ended.

Some contracts require users to tell listeners that audio is synthetic. Speechify’s cited AI Voice API agreement requires a commercially reasonable disclosure that output is AI-generated and not a human voice. That requirement is specific to the API supplemental terms; it does not establish the rule for every Speechify plan or another provider.

Also read the prohibited-use policy for the exact service. Restrictions can matter even when you have consent and commercial permission; provider terms do not replace applicable law or grant rights to a third party’s voice, likeness or other protected material.
Use the legal context carefully
The U.S. Copyright Office’s Copyright and Artificial Intelligence information page describes its work on issues including copyrightability of AI-generated work and the use of copyrighted materials in training. It notes that Part 1 of its AI report recommended a federal digital-replica law on July 31, 2024. That context explains why voice and output rights merit scrutiny; it does not determine the law for every person, jurisdiction or use. Seek legal advice for high-stakes or commercial voice licensing questions.

A practical pre-upload and pre-publication checklist
- Identify the contract. Record the exact service, model, plan, region and whether consumer, API or enterprise terms apply.
- Secure permission. Obtain documented consent from the speaker and confirm that the permitted use covers your intended recording, clone and distribution.
- Inspect the input license. Check whether the provider can use recordings or models for service operation, improvement, product development or sublicensing, and whether that permission can be withdrawn.
- Verify output rights. Confirm commercial permissions for the plan and model, any conditions, and your rights to the source voice.
- Review lifecycle and sharing controls. Determine what can be deleted, what may persist, who can access a shared model and how access ends.
- Check disclosure and restrictions. Find out whether you must label synthetic audio and which uses are prohibited.
- Recheck current terms before relying on them. Provider terms can change; use the live document that applies when you create and publish the audio.
