Choose an AI security platform by proving that it can observe and govern what agents do—not just inspect their prompts and answers. Require a trace of each run from its trigger through the agent identity, tool calls and arguments, authorization decisions, results, and any handoffs to other agents. Then test detection and containment against the risks in your environment, including prompt injection, excessive permissions, data exfiltration, memory poisoning, and runaway actions or cost. Shortlist against your frameworks, identity controls, telemetry, audit, and operational requirements; validate vendor claims in your own deployment.
What should an agent security platform monitor?
An autonomous agent can reason, use tools, retain memory, and take actions. That makes its security boundary broader than a model endpoint: a useful platform needs visibility into the context and consequences of actions as well as the inputs and outputs. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet identifies risks such as direct and indirect prompt injection, tool abuse, privilege escalation, data exfiltration, memory poisoning, goal hijacking, excessive autonomy, cascading failures, sensitive-data exposure, supply-chain attacks, and denial of wallet.
- Identity and scope: Which user, agent, parent or child agent, and service credential initiated or carried out the action? What tools, data, and permissions were available?
- Actions and decisions: Which tool or API was called, with what arguments? Was the action allowed, denied, or sent for approval, and under which policy?
- Data and state: What retrieval or memory access or update occurred, and could sensitive information have moved to a tool or destination?
- Results and propagation: What did the tool return, did the action succeed, and was its output passed to another agent?
- Operational signals: Are tool frequency, high-risk actions, errors, loops, token use, and cost visible enough to spot anomalous or unbounded activity?
For a consequential action, the record should connect the initiating task, agent identity, tool and arguments, authorization or approval outcome, result, and policy version. OWASP recommends logging agent decisions, tool calls, and outcomes, and tracking anomalous behavior and token usage and costs. Its guidance also calls out approval-bypass attempts, elevated privilege use, abnormal tool frequency, and spikes in high-risk actions. A prompt-and-response log alone cannot reliably answer who or what acted, what authority it used, or which control permitted the action.

How do you evaluate a platform?
Use a repeatable evaluation against your actual agent workflows. Ask vendors to demonstrate each control with a trace, policy decision, alert, and audit record from the same scenario; a feature description is not evidence that the feature covers your deployment.

1. Map agents, identities, and permissions
Ask how the product discovers agents in your own applications and third-party frameworks, and what it inventories: model, framework, runtime, tools, connected data, owner, service identity, and effective permissions. Test whether it can distinguish the initiating user from a parent agent, child agent, and service credential during delegation. Agent identity and authentication are active standards and research topics in the NIST AI Agent Standards Initiative; do not assume one vendor’s identity model is interchangeable with your existing identity controls.
Compare declared access with what the agent can actually do. For example, an agent asked to read a document should not gain write or delete authority just because a shared account or extension has those permissions. OWASP describes this mismatch as excessive agency and recommends minimizing tool permissions. See OWASP LLM06:2025, Excessive Agency.
2. Reconstruct a run, not just an alert
Run a representative task and verify that one trace joins the task trigger to model or agent identity, tool/API calls and arguments, retrieval, memory access or updates, approvals, denials, errors, results, and inter-agent handoffs. Check whether an investigator can follow the sequence without stitching together unrelated logs or losing the policy decision that explains why an action was allowed.

Inspect redaction and retention controls for secrets and personal or confidential information: monitoring itself can create another data-exposure path if traces are too broadly accessible or retained without appropriate controls. OWASP’s Agent Observability Standard frames observability around instrumentation, traceability, and inspectability. Its trace specifications extend OpenTelemetry and OCSF, but the cited specifications are marked as working drafts at the OWASP AOS Trace page. Confirm the current revision and maturity before making a draft format a production dependency.
3. Test enforcement before an action executes
Determine whether policy runs before the consequential action, rather than merely generating a post-event alert. Check whether rules can scope tools and data by agent, user, task, environment, and risk, and whether they support parameter constraints, approvals, expiration, circuit breakers, and an emergency stop. Test the denied path as carefully as the permitted path: does the agent stop, retry through another tool, or delegate the same prohibited action?
Monitoring and enforcement solve different problems. A dashboard may help an investigator understand an event, but least-privilege access and authorization before sensitive actions reduce the chance that the action occurs. OWASP recommends per-tool scopes, separated tool sets for different trust levels, and explicit authorization for sensitive operations.

4. Exercise detection and incident response
Build a scenario set from the threats relevant to your agents, then check both detection and containment. Include direct and indirect prompt injection; tool poisoning or misuse; credential and data exfiltration; memory poisoning; privilege escalation; goal hijacking; approval bypass; unusual high-impact actions; cross-agent propagation; and unbounded loops or cost.
For each case, record whether the platform detects it, what action it takes, and what evidence reaches the responder. An alert should carry enough trace context to identify which agent acted, what it attempted, what result followed, and which control allowed or blocked it. Measure detection and response in your own setup rather than treating a vendor’s stated threat coverage as proof of efficacy.
5. Verify the claims and operational fit
Map requirements to a testable catalogue such as OWASP AISVS. OWASP describes AISVS 1.0 as a vendor-neutral set of requirements covering the AI lifecycle, including agent orchestration and monitoring. Released in June 2026, that version contains 191 requirements across 12 chapters and three appendices. Ask vendors to tie evidence to the exact product version, configuration, framework, policy, and tests—not merely to a general security capability.

Check compatibility with the frameworks you run, your OpenTelemetry/OCSF pipelines, identity controls, SIEM/SOAR, and data governance stack. Estimate the work required to instrument and deploy agents, assign policy ownership, tune detections and false positives, handle upgrades, export incident evidence, and manage retention. Capture deployment architecture and jurisdiction-specific obligations in your own review; platform selection alone does not establish compliance.

|---|---|---|
| Open-source governance toolkit | Microsoft announced the Agent Governance Toolkit on April 2, 2026, as an open-source project under the MIT license. Its announcement describes policy enforcement before action execution, agent identity, runtime controls, reliability features, compliance evidence, and SDKs for Python, TypeScript, Rust, Go, and .NET. These are Microsoft’s project claims, not independent test results. See the announcement. | Assess project maturity and maintenance, framework integration, deployment model, policy authoring and review, telemetry depth, and whether your team can operate and support it. If considering the announcement’s Agent OS policy-engine figure of less than 0.1 ms p99 latency, treat it as a Microsoft-published claim, not an independently measured result. |
| Commercial AI security platform | Palo Alto Networks positions Prisma AIRS as a platform for AI and agent security. Its Prisma AIRS overview and agent security page describe agent identity verification, runtime behavior monitoring, policy enforcement, and controls addressing manipulation, data exposure, and unsafe actions. These are vendor descriptions, not comparative proof. | Request a version-specific demonstration. Test framework coverage, inspection points, identity mapping, policy behavior, audit export, deployment changes, data handling, and detection and latency under your own scenarios. |
| Standards-led verification and observability | OWASP AISVS provides testable security requirements. OWASP AOS describes agent observability and trace formats using OpenTelemetry and OCSF extensions; cited trace specifications are working drafts. | Use the references to structure requirements and test cases. Check the current revision and maturity before relying on a draft as a stable integration contract. |
The available official descriptions do not establish independent detection efficacy or a controlled comparison among these approaches. Do not infer that a stated threat list or latency figure means one option will perform better in your specific deployment.
What should a proof of concept prove?
Before committing, agree on a small set of observable pass conditions tied to your workflows. Keep the same scenarios, configuration, and success criteria across candidates so that the results are comparable.
- Inventory: The platform identifies the test agents, their owners and identities, connected tools and data, and effective permissions—including delegated identities where used.
- Trace: A responder can reconstruct a run from trigger through arguments, authorization, execution result, and any handoff, while appropriate redaction and retention controls are applied.
- Policy: A permitted low-risk action succeeds; a disallowed or approval-required action is blocked or routed as configured before execution. The agent cannot bypass the decision by retrying or delegating.
- Detection: The agreed threat scenarios produce the expected alert or containment response, with enough context to investigate. Record misses and false positives as well as successes.
- Operations: Evidence reaches the systems your responders use, and the team can manage policy changes, tuning, upgrades, and audit export without creating unacceptable deployment or data-handling burdens.
Document the tested product version, framework, configuration, policies, scenarios, and observed outcomes. That record gives procurement and security reviewers a defensible basis for comparing candidates without confusing published product claims with results from your own environment.
