For a recurring scheduled stream, use a custom YouTube stream key if you want to reuse the same key in your encoder. Select the protocol your encoder actually uses; a reusable key simplifies the connection, but it does not schedule a broadcast or automate a 24/7 playlist. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so do not assume one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be archived in full.
What a YouTube stream key does—and does not do
A YouTube stream key is a credential that lets an encoder send a video and audio feed to YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its Manage live stream settings guidance.
A key is only one part of a scheduled 24/7 playlist setup. Scheduling determines when a YouTube live event is planned; the encoder sends the feed; and separate playback or automation controls determine what video plays and whether it continues. Reusing a key does not configure playlist playback or guarantee continuous operation.
Which stream key should you choose?
Recurring standard encoder stream
Create a custom stream key in YouTube Live Control Room if you want to use the same key for recurring streams. You can also reuse prior stream settings when you schedule a stream. Enter the matching stream URL and key in your encoder. Reuse can simplify setup, but check that the selected key is the one intended for that encoder and event.

HLS encoder workflow
Choose HLS only when your encoder and planned ingestion workflow use HLS. YouTube’s HLS instructions require creating a stream key with HLS selected. The listed requirements include 1–4 second segments, TS segment format, no byte ranges, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption other than HTTPS. These are HLS requirements, not settings to apply to an RTMP workflow. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion instructions.
One-off or compromised key
A key associated with a one-off setup may be adequate when you do not need reuse. If a key is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. Treat the key like a password and do not share it publicly.

Schedule the stream and connect the encoder
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, select Manage, then choose Schedule stream.
- Choose the event setup. Reuse prior settings or create a stream. Scheduling configures the YouTube event; it does not by itself start an encoder or choose playlist playback.
- Choose or create the matching key. For a recurring standard workflow, create a custom key if you want to reuse one. For HLS, create a new key with HLS selected and follow the HLS-specific requirements.
- Configure the encoder. Copy the stream URL into the encoder’s server field and the stream key into its Stream Key field. Make sure the encoder protocol matches the key’s protocol.
- Start and verify the feed. Start the encoder, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, check audio and video, then click Go live when ready. YouTube’s encoder setup tips recommend setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes ahead.
Plan for a broadcast that is meant to run 24/7
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not provide a complete archive or continuity strategy for a broadcast that exceeds that duration. If you need a complete recording, do not assume a single uninterrupted 24/7 stream will be archived in full; plan separately for recording and archiving, and verify your intended workflow.

Check the preview and monitor the stream
YouTube recommends encoder setup at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use the preview to confirm that YouTube is receiving the intended picture and audio before going live. YouTube also recommends checking that the stream can be reached through channel and watch pages and on mobile devices, then monitoring audio and video quality during the broadcast. These are operational recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 service.
Troubleshoot common stream-key problems
- No feed reaches YouTube: Confirm that the encoder’s server field contains the stream URL and its Stream Key field contains the selected key. Check for copied spaces or characters and confirm the key and encoder use the same protocol.
- The encoder uses HLS but the key is not configured for HLS: Create a key with HLS selected and apply the HLS requirements. Do not copy HLS segment settings into an RTMP workflow.
- The preview does not appear: Confirm the encoder is running and sending to the scheduled stream’s URL and key. Wait for the Live Control Room preview, and do not select Go live until the intended feed is visible.
- The key may have been exposed: Have a channel owner or manager reset it in Live Control Room, then replace the old value in the encoder.
- The 24/7 stream does not produce a complete archive: YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not establish a full archive strategy beyond that boundary; arrange separate recording or an appropriate stream plan rather than relying on a single long broadcast archive.
