For video meetings, choose a webcam that frames the people who will be on camera and works with your computer and meeting apps. A basic 1080p webcam can be enough for one person; prioritize a wider or adjustable view, autofocus, or higher-resolution capture only when your room, movement, or other uses call for it.

Start with the scene you need to show

Field of view (FOV) affects how much of the room fits in the image. A tighter view can keep one person prominent, while a wider view can include more people or surroundings. Too wide a view can make each participant look small; Microsoft also notes that “The wider the field of view, the less depth the camera can focus on accurately.” Its advice is written for Teams Rooms, but the framing principle is useful for choosing a personal webcam too. Microsoft’s camera-selection guidance recommends placing cameras as close to eye level as possible and centered under the display.

  • One person at a desk: A narrower view can keep your face prominent and reduce distractions around you.
  • Several people sharing a camera: Look for a wider view, and position the webcam so everyone fits without becoming tiny in the frame.
  • Changing setups: An adjustable FOV can help if you switch between a close individual shot and a wider group or room view.

Compare the features that affect your calls

Resolution and frame rate

Resolution describes image dimensions; frame rate describes how many frames the camera can capture per second. These specifications indicate capability, not how good a particular meeting app will make the image look. Do not assume the highest resolution automatically improves every call: consider extra resolution when you have a specific use, such as cropping or recording, and check that your intended app and computer support your workflow.

Focus

Fixed-focus webcams are designed to keep a set range in focus, while autofocus adjusts to the subject. Consider autofocus if you move around or vary your distance from the camera; fixed focus may suit a stationary desk setup. These feature labels alone do not establish that one camera will look sharper than another in your room.

Lighting correction

Automatic light correction is useful when room lighting varies, but it cannot make poor lighting irrelevant. Logitech’s setup guidance recommends adding a desk lamp or ring light if your lighting is poor; this is manufacturer advice, not an independent comparison. Logitech’s webcam setup guide covers its settings and lighting suggestions.

Privacy, mounting, and connection

Check the physical setup before buying: connector type, cable reach, monitor or laptop placement, and whether you need a tripod mount. A privacy shutter is useful when you want a physical way to cover the lens between calls. Confirm that the webcam’s connector matches an available port on your computer; the examples below use USB-A.

Meeting-app compatibility

Check the exact model’s current compatibility and certification list for the apps you use. Certification is model-specific and may change; a listing for one webcam should not be generalized to a brand’s entire range.

Model Documented specifications What the trade-off means
Logitech Brio 100 1080p at 30 fps; fixed focus; 58.9° diagonal FOV; RightLight 2; integrated privacy shutter; USB-A. Logitech lists Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Google Meet certifications. Manufacturer specifications. A straightforward individual-call reference point with a relatively narrow view and fixed focus.
Logitech C920e 78° diagonal fixed FOV; autofocus; RightLight 2; attachable privacy shutter; USB-A; tripod thread. Logitech lists Teams and Zoom certification. Its datasheet was published in October 2021. C920e datasheet. An autofocus example with a wider fixed view. Because the datasheet is dated, recheck current model status and specifications before purchase.
Logitech Brio 4K at 30 fps; autofocus; selectable 65°/78°/90° diagonal FOV; RightLight 3; attachable shutter. Manufacturer specifications. An option to consider when you need high-resolution capture or variable framing; the specifications alone do not prove better results in a given meeting app.

Choose by setup, not by the biggest number

  • For a stationary solo call: Start with a simple USB webcam whose FOV frames you at a comfortable size. Fixed focus may be suitable if you stay at a consistent distance.
  • If you move or change distance: Consider autofocus, then verify the camera’s FOV still suits your typical framing.
  • For a shared room or changing shot: Prioritize enough FOV for everyone, or adjustable framing if you need both close and wide views.
  • For cropping or recording beyond routine calls: Consider higher-resolution capture, while checking the requirements of your software and workflow.
  • For dim or uneven light: Look for light-correction features, and address the room lighting with a desk lamp or ring light if needed.

Check the setup before ordering

  1. Measure the frame: Sit or gather people where the webcam will be used, then decide how much of the scene should fit. Choose a tighter view for a prominent single-person image or a wider view for a group.
  2. Check focus needs: If you stay in one position, fixed focus may work. If you expect to move or change distance, look for autofocus.
  3. Match the connection: Verify that the specific camera’s connector fits a port on your computer and that its cable can reach the intended mounting position.
  4. Confirm app support: Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility details for your meeting platform rather than relying on a certification listed for a different model.
  5. Inspect mounting and privacy: Confirm the clip, tripod thread if needed, and shutter type fit your setup and preferences.
  6. Plan for lighting: Test the space at the times you usually meet. If your face is poorly lit, improve the light source as well as considering the webcam’s correction features.
