Choose a UPS by matching its output to your exact Raspberry Pi and everything else that must stay powered, then check its runtime at that complete load. A Pi’s recommended power supply rating is not the same as its measured streaming draw or a promise of battery runtime. Back up the router and broadband equipment too if they need power; a UPS cannot keep a stream online if the internet connection itself fails.
How to choose a UPS for a Raspberry Pi YouTube stream during power cuts in India
There is no one UPS capacity that suits every Raspberry Pi streaming setup. The right choice depends on the board model, connected peripherals, networking equipment, the UPS’s output and switchover behavior, and how long you want the system to run on battery. Work through those factors before comparing capacity labels or buying a UPS HAT.
1. Identify the Pi model and its power requirement
Start with the exact board, because power recommendations differ. Raspberry Pi’s official documentation recommends 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5 and Raspberry Pi 500, and 5 V at 3 A for Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 400. Raspberry Pi notes that using a 5 V, 3 A supply with a Pi 5 limits the current available to peripherals. Requirements for older boards vary, so check the documentation for your model rather than applying these figures to every Pi. Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation recommends using an official Raspberry Pi power supply.
These are published power-supply recommendations, not measurements of what your streaming setup draws and not UPS runtime figures. The UPS must provide compatible, regulated output at the Pi’s input, with the required voltage and enough current for the board and its attached devices. Check the connector, current limit, and the UPS manufacturer’s supported Pi models.

2. Count the full load, not just the board
List every device that has to remain on for your broadcast workflow to continue:
- Raspberry Pi and any USB storage or other USB peripherals
- Camera, audio equipment, or capture hardware, if used
- Router and modem or optical network terminal (ONT)
- Network switches or other equipment the connection depends on
- A display only if it genuinely needs to stay powered during the outage
Raspberry Pi documentation warns that power needs vary with connected peripherals, and that an inadequate supply, high-demand USB devices, or a poor or thin cable can lead to voltage drops and low-voltage warnings. See Raspberry Pi’s computer hardware documentation. Account for the complete load that will be connected to the UPS, not just the Pi’s nominal supply recommendation.

Find the operating wattage for the full setup while it is streaming, preferably by measuring it under realistic conditions. If you cannot measure it, use the equipment specifications as an estimate and allow for devices that draw more under load. Do not assume that a UPS’s VA rating tells you how long this load will run.
3. Verify output compatibility and switchover
Before purchasing, compare the UPS against the devices it will power. A Raspberry Pi UPS may deliver power through a HAT or GPIO connection rather than through the board’s standard power input; check the design and the manufacturer’s compatibility details instead of assuming either method is suitable.

- For the Pi: Confirm regulated 5 V output, sufficient current for the complete Pi load, a compatible connector or documented HAT arrangement, and support for your specific model.
- For the router, modem, or ONT: Confirm each device’s required voltage, polarity, connector, and current. Do not connect a network device to an output merely because its plug fits.
- For mains failure: Check whether the UPS switches to battery without interrupting power long enough to reboot the Pi or disconnect the network equipment. If the maker does not specify this behavior, test it with your setup.
- For long-term use: Compare battery chemistry, whether the battery is replaceable, charging behavior, warranty, local availability, and service in India.
4. Choose a runtime target using the load
Decide how long you want to ride through a power cut based on the outages you actually need to cover. Then use the manufacturer’s runtime chart at your measured total watt load. A battery’s capacity label by itself does not establish usable runtime, and the available documentation does not support a universal capacity-to-runtime figure for Raspberry Pi streams.
When comparing UPS options, compare runtime at the same full-system load and under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. If the vendor provides no relevant runtime curve, ask for one or conduct a controlled test before relying on the device for an important broadcast.

5. Keep the internet connection in the backup plan
Backing up the Pi alone is not enough if the router, modem, or ONT loses power. Include the network devices your connection requires, and confirm that the broadband service remains available during a local outage. Whether an ISP’s equipment and upstream network stay online depends on that provider and connection; a local UPS cannot preserve an internet link that has gone down upstream.

6. Test the complete stream before relying on it
- Connect the intended load. Set up the Pi, peripherals, router, modem or ONT, and any other equipment that must stay online.
- Run the actual streaming workflow. Test with the encoder settings and stream quality you plan to use. YouTube publishes live streaming tips and encoder settings and bitrate guidance; use the settings applicable to your stream rather than assuming battery backup changes what the encoder needs.
- Simulate a power cut. With the stream running, remove mains power to the UPS and observe whether the Pi stays up and the network remains connected.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. Look for an interruption, encoder disconnect, or network issue, and confirm the Pi did not reboot.
- Record usable runtime. Continue the test only as long as is safe for the battery and equipment, and compare the result with your target. Repeat under realistic conditions if the first run did not include the usual full load.
YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and stream quality before relying on a live broadcast. A UPS capacity label or a successful startup test does not prove that your whole stream will survive an outage.
How to compare UPS options
Use these criteria for each product rather than relying on a generic capacity ranking. No particular India-available UPS model or load-specific runtime is established here, so these are evaluation criteria, not tested product recommendations.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Pi output | Regulated voltage, available current, connector or HAT/GPIO arrangement, and support for your exact Pi model and peripherals |
| Full-load runtime | Manufacturer runtime at the measured wattage of the Pi and all backed-up equipment |
| Switchover | Whether the Pi and network devices stay powered through mains loss without rebooting or disconnecting |
| Network outputs | Correct voltage, polarity, connector, and current for each router, modem, or ONT |
| Battery and service | Battery chemistry, replaceability, charging behavior, India-local availability, warranty, and service |
Common problems and what to check
- The Pi shows low-voltage warnings or becomes unstable. Recheck output current, the total peripheral load, and cable quality. A weak or thin cable and high-demand USB devices can contribute to voltage drop; test with the complete load attached.
- The Pi stays on but the stream stops. Check whether the router, modem, or ONT also had backup power and whether the internet service stayed available. Review YouTube stream health and the connection’s upload stability.
- The Pi reboots when mains power fails. The switchover may be interrupting power, or the UPS output may not suit the load. Verify the maker’s switchover specifications and repeat a controlled test with all devices connected.
- The UPS runs for less time than expected. Compare your actual total load with the load used in the runtime chart. Capacity labels do not replace load-specific runtime information.
- A UPS HAT does not fit the intended setup. Confirm the board model, physical arrangement, power path, and whether the HAT feeds the Pi through GPIO or another input. Do not assume a HAT designed for one model or configuration supports another.
Or let it run in the cloud
