Choose a UPI payment gateway by checking whether your business can be onboarded, how customers will pay, the full fees and settlement terms, and whether the integration fits your site, app, and team. There is no evidence here for a universal best provider: compare written offers for your business, then test the payment flow with your customers.
Start with the payment flow your customers need
UPI acceptance is not a single checkout experience. NPCI identifies QR, intent, application-based, and collect modes for online merchant payments. Match the mode to where a customer is paying from and what device they are using, rather than choosing from a feature list alone. See the NPCI UPI FAQ.
- Website checkout: Intent can hand a customer off to a UPI app on a compatible device. For a desktop-to-phone journey, a QR code may be more practical.
- Mobile app: Application-based flows can connect the checkout to a UPI app. Confirm which operating systems, apps, and fallback paths the provider supports.
- QR, links, and collect: Dynamic QR codes, payment links, and collect requests may suit different checkout or sales journeys. Check whether the provider supports the exact mode you plan to use, and how it reports payment status.
- Recurring payments: If you need subscriptions or repeat debits, ask specifically about UPI AutoPay mandates, setup, cancellation, and failed-payment handling. A provider listing AutoPay does not by itself establish that every recurring use case is supported.
Ask for a demonstration of the complete customer journey, including what happens if the customer switches apps, abandons payment, or returns to the merchant site late.

NPCI says merchants enable UPI acceptance by partnering with an acquiring bank. The onboarding process includes due diligence and risk assessment, and the merchant category code (MCC) is assigned according to the business category. The acquiring arrangement also determines how merchant funds are received. These are reasons to clarify the provider’s contractual role—not just its product name—before signing up.

“Payment gateway” and “payment aggregator” are not interchangeable legal classifications. RBI’s framework applies to entities undertaking payment aggregation, while its material distinguishes gateways that provide technology infrastructure without handling funds. Ask which legal entity you are contracting with, whether it handles or routes funds, who is responsible for settlement, and where to verify the relevant authorization or arrangement. Consult the RBI Master Direction on Regulation of Payment Aggregator and the RBI report on payment systems.
Also confirm that your business category, website or app, and intended transaction types are eligible. NPCI maintains a UPI circular index; operational rules can change, so confirm which current requirements apply to your specific flow and category.

Compare the full cost, not a headline rate
Ask for a written schedule that breaks out fees by payment instrument and merchant category. A UPI price shown on a public page may not be the price or offer your business receives. Include the following in the comparison:
- Per-transaction fees for UPI and every other payment method you plan to accept.
- GST and whether it is added to the quoted fee.
- Setup, onboarding, and recurring maintenance charges.
- Fees for add-ons, refunds, chargebacks or disputes, and reconciliation services, where applicable.
- Eligibility, duration, and post-promotion price for any discount or zero-fee offer.
- Extra charges for faster settlement, if available.
Provider pages surfaced these examples; they are provider-stated terms, not a market-wide comparison or guarantee of your quote:

Separate payment confirmation from settlement
A customer’s successful UPI payment and the date money reaches your business account are different parts of the process. NPCI says merchant receipt follows the arrangement with the acquiring bank. Get the timetable and conditions from the provider in writing, including how weekends and holidays are treated, whether faster access needs approval or costs extra, and whether reserves or holds can apply.

For context, Cashfree’s page describes default T+2 settlement, with faster settlement subject to approval and terms. PayU describes standard T+2 settlement and faster options depending on merchant profile. These are provider descriptions, not a promise that your account will receive funds on those terms. Confirm what T+2 means in your contract and when the settlement clock starts. See the Cashfree UPI page and PayU pricing page.
Check integration, reporting, and operations
Choose an implementation your team can maintain. PayU’s integration guide recommends considering payment types, currencies, security and fraud controls, customer features, split payments, and implementation resources. Its guidance is a useful checklist even if you are evaluating another provider: Choose your Integration.
- Integration route: Check for a supported plugin for your ecommerce platform, an SDK for your app, and server-side APIs if you need custom checkout behavior.
- Payment status: Find out how the provider reports success, failure, and pending payments, including webhook delivery, retries, and duplicate notifications.
- Reconciliation: Review sample exports and confirm that transaction IDs, fees, refunds, and settlements can be matched to your orders and bank credits.
- Refunds and disputes: Test the refund workflow, learn expected processing times, and identify what evidence or response deadlines apply to disputes.
- Security and fraud controls: Ask which controls are available for your business and who is responsible for configuring and monitoring them.
- Support: Get the support channels, operating hours, escalation route, and any response commitments in writing. Public provider pages in this comparison do not establish comparable support performance.
Evaluate success rates with your own evidence
A provider’s “highest success rate” claim is not a neutral head-to-head benchmark. Success depends on factors such as customer bank and app, device, checkout flow, merchant category, and the period measured. The provider pages considered here do not establish comparable performance for a particular business.
Ask any provider making a performance claim for the merchant category, issuer-bank mix, devices and payment flow behind the figure, the date range, and its definition of success. Then run a controlled pilot where possible and monitor payment completion, failure reasons, refunds, reconciliation effort, settlement punctuality, and support resolution. Compare providers using the same measures and time window rather than a headline percentage.
