Choose a turn-based RPG by matching its combat pace, build complexity, story focus, difficulty, and multiplayer options to the way you want to play. The genre can offer time to think and precise party control, but battles may also feel slow or repetitive. Start with your preferences, then check a few games that fit rather than relying on a single “best” list.
Decide what you want from turn-based combat
Turn-based play lets you pause between actions, weigh options, and direct party members deliberately. In a 2020 qualitative study, players described tactical depth and unrushed play as strengths, while also naming slow or tedious battles as drawbacks. Those are reported perceptions, not guarantees: the pace and variety of encounters differ by game.
Consider how you feel about planning every move. If you enjoy comparing actions and coordinating a party, the extra time can be a benefit. If you prefer continuous action or dislike waiting through repeated encounters, turn-based combat may feel sluggish—especially when fights become familiar.
Choose a primary draw: story, builds, or squad tactics

Check build freedom and rules complexity
Character-building freedom can be exciting if you like trying combinations, but it also asks you to manage more decisions. Bandai Namco’s page for Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition says players can choose among six Origin Characters or create a custom character. It describes a classless system with over 200 skills across 12 skill schools. That breadth may reward experimentation; it may be a poor match if you want a simpler build path.
Before choosing any RPG, look for how much freedom it gives you to shape characters and whether that freedom comes with substantial skill, equipment, or party management. A game’s build system is part of its ongoing workload, not just a menu of options at the start.

Match difficulty to your tolerance for failure
Think about what you want a mistake to cost. Some players enjoy a demanding tactical challenge; others want to explore the story without frequent punishing setbacks. Divinity: Original Sin 2’s official page lists five difficulty modes, from Story Mode, aimed at narrative focus, to Honour Mode, where death is final. For another game, inspect its own difficulty choices and understand what they change before settling on it.
Decide whether you will play solo or with others
Check the exact co-op mode before choosing a game for a group. Divinity: Original Sin 2 supports a party of four and, according to Bandai Namco, offers single-player, two-player split-screen, and four-player online play. Confirm that the PC mode and compatibility work for everyone in your group rather than assuming that a game’s multiplayer features match your setup.

Verify PC access and practical requirements
Larian’s support page lists PC and Mac for Divinity: Original Sin 2 and identifies Steam and GOG as PC routes. For any game you are considering, check the current system requirements, supported operating system, and the specific edition offered by your chosen storefront.
