Choose a survival horror game by deciding what you want to do when danger appears: fight it, hide and adapt, or explore an unsettling world where combat is only part of the experience. Then check the game’s camera, separate combat and puzzle difficulty options, platform, and accessibility settings in the exact edition you plan to play.

Which survival horror game should I play?

Start with the threat relationship that sounds enjoyable, not with a broad label like “hard” or “scary.” Survival horror can put the emphasis on tactical encounters, evasion, or psychological exploration. Official descriptions of Amnesia: The Bunker and the Silent Hill 2 remake illustrate how different those experiences can be.

If you want… Look for… Example
Vulnerability, stealth, and reacting to a pursuing threat Descriptions emphasizing evasion, sound or movement, resource management, and exploration Amnesia: The Bunker is presented as first-person horror with a threat that reacts to movement and sound.
Psychological horror, exploration, and combat that does not make the protagonist feel like an action hero A game that balances atmosphere with encounters and offers some flexibility in how you approach them The Silent Hill 2 remake is described as psychological horror with over-the-shoulder presentation and modernized combat.
Combat challenge with selectable difficulty Settings that explain the available difficulty modes for your platform and edition EA’s Dead Space PC gameplay settings document selectable difficulty and an Impossible challenge mode.

These are examples, not promises about every game in the genre. Read the current product page and settings information for the specific version you intend to play.

Do I want a horror game with combat or one where I hide?

Choose combat if planning encounters is part of the appeal

If you enjoy deciding when to engage, managing resources, and handling tense fights, look for descriptions that foreground combat and check what difficulty controls are available. Combat does not automatically mean the character feels powerful. In PlayStation’s May 30, 2024 announcement, creative director Motoi Okamoto said of the Silent Hill 2 remake: “The combat in this remake is designed to allow for a wider variety of approaches – the player’s arsenal of actions has been expanded, while also preserving the feeling of playing as an inexperienced everyman.” That is a design intention for this remake, not a rule for the genre.

Choose evasion if being hunted sounds more appealing than winning fights

Look for explicit signs that a game rewards avoiding threats, such as stealth, sound-sensitive enemies, or resource management. Steam describes Amnesia: The Bunker as a first-person survival horror game in which an ever-present threat reacts to movement and sound; its listing also identifies stealth, resource management, and exploration. Those details make it a useful match for players who want to feel vulnerable and adapt rather than treat every encounter as a fight to win.

Choose a mix if atmosphere and occasional desperate fights both matter

A game can emphasize psychological horror and exploration while still including combat. The PlayStation description of the Silent Hill 2 remake centers on exploring Silent Hill in search of James’ late wife, and identifies its view as over-the-shoulder and its combat as modernized. If you want mood and investigation without ruling out fights, that combination is more informative than the genre label alone.

Are survival horror games too hard?

“Hard” can mean several things: enemies are difficult to defeat, puzzles are challenging, or the game offers few ways to recover from a mistake. Check these dimensions separately and confirm that the options apply to your platform and edition.

  • Combat difficulty: Look for a setting that changes how demanding encounters are.
  • Puzzle difficulty: Check whether the game offers a separate puzzle setting and whether it changes hints or puzzle content.
  • Assists and challenge modes: Read what each option actually changes. An assist may help with a specific control challenge, while a challenge mode may impose stricter conditions rather than make play easier.

For the PS5 listing of the Silent Hill 2 remake, PlayStation identifies adjustable difficulty and assists. Konami’s support page says combat difficulty can be changed later in Settings, but puzzle difficulty affects game content and cannot be changed during a playthrough. EA’s Dead Space PC settings page documents selectable difficulty and an Impossible mode. These examples show why it is worth checking the rules before starting, especially if you expect to adjust puzzle challenge as you go.

Does first-person or over-the-shoulder view matter?

Yes, if one camera style is more comfortable or appealing to you. First-person games show the world from the character’s viewpoint; over-the-shoulder games place the camera behind the character. Neither view is inherently scarier or easier, so use official descriptions or gameplay previews to see which presentation you prefer.

Steam identifies Amnesia: The Bunker as first-person. PlayStation describes the Silent Hill 2 remake as over-the-shoulder. Treat that as a genuine preference check rather than a difficulty shortcut.

How do I check platform and accessibility options?

Open the official product page for the platform you will use, then inspect its accessibility and control details. A feature listed for one platform should not be assumed to exist in another port.

How should I choose a first game in a long-running series?

Use the publisher’s entry guide to narrow the options, then match its recommendations to your preferences for combat, evasion, atmosphere, and challenge. Capcom’s October 18, 2024 “Resident Evil: Where to Play” guide is explicitly intended to help players choose a first or next Resident Evil game. A series guide can orient you, but your preferred play style is still the deciding factor.
