A good Sudoku website is one that offers puzzles at a suitable challenge level, useful solving aids, and an interface that works for you. But this is a criteria-based guide, not a firsthand 2026 comparison: the available evidence does not establish current usability, advertising, pricing, or mobile performance across five sites.
What makes a Sudoku website good?
Start with how you like to solve. A useful platform should make it easy to find an appropriate puzzle, enter answers comfortably, and recover from mistakes without getting in the way. Compare these factors before settling on a site:
- Difficulty and puzzle variety: Look for levels that suit your experience and, if you want a change of pace, distinct puzzle modes. Treat labels such as Easy, Expert, or Extreme as that site’s own scale.
- Solving aids: Check whether you can enter candidate notes, request hints, undo moves, erase entries, or receive error feedback. A hint that explains a technique may be more useful for learning than one that simply supplies a digit.
- Access and cadence: Decide whether you want a daily puzzle, an archive, or a way to select puzzles repeatedly.
- Interface comfort: Try the site on the device you actually use. Check grid readability and whether tapping, clicking, or keyboard input feels manageable.
- Access friction: Before relying on a site, check its current advertising, account requirements, subscription restrictions, and availability in your region. These conditions can change.
Standard Sudoku uses a 9-by-9 grid. The aim is to place digits 1 through 9 so that each row, column, and 3-by-3 box contains every digit once. Sudoku.com’s rules page also recommends scanning rows, columns, and boxes when solving.
What the available evidence says about five websites
The evidence supports a narrow comparison, not a complete 2026 ranking. Sudoku.com and Web Sudoku have current official pages in the reviewed material; a separate 2025 preprint examines difficulty labels at five sites. It does not measure the sites’ usability, advertising, mobile experience, or subscription value.
#1 Best Overall
Sudoku.com
Sudoku.com’s page presents Classic and Killer modes. Classic lists Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert, Master, and Extreme; Killer lists Easy through Expert. The interface exposes Notes, Hint, Undo, and Erase controls, and says its hints explain solving methods. The page also links to printable Sudoku. These are page features, not evidence that the site is easier or better to use than another platform.
Web Sudoku
Web Sudoku’s landing page describes its catalog as billions of free puzzles. The accessible page content does not establish its specific solving controls, advertising level, or access conditions, so check the current interface for those details.

Five sites examined for difficulty ratings
In a 2025 preprint, Arman Eisenkolb-Vaithyanathan’s Project Patti analyzes 1,320 puzzles from New York Times, Sudoku.org.uk, Extreme Sudoku, Sudoku of the Day, and Sudoku of the Day UK. The described dataset includes 60 puzzles for each difficulty level on each site. The author reports that proposed difficulty metrics aligned with the sites’ labels for four of the five; Extreme Sudoku showed an anomalous pattern.

It does not establish that labels are equivalent across sites, nor does it amount to a review of current features or overall quality.

Why difficulty labels do not translate directly between sites
One website’s Hard puzzle may not demand the same reasoning as another’s Hard puzzle. Sites set their own scales, and the 2025 study found an anomalous rating pattern at one of the five websites it examined. Use labels to choose a starting point on a particular site, then adjust based on your experience.
When comparing difficulty, pay attention to the reasoning a puzzle asks of you, not just its label. If a site offers hints, see whether they identify a useful technique or simply reveal a value; that distinction matters if you want to improve rather than just finish.

A practical way to choose
- Pick your priority. Decide whether you care most about learning aids, a broad selection, daily play, or a comfortable interface.
- Try a representative puzzle. Use a level you would normally choose, and check how easily you can enter numbers and candidate notes, request help, and correct a move.
- Check access on your device. Confirm whether the puzzles you want are available without an account or payment, and note any advertising or restrictions you encounter.
- Reassess the difficulty label. If the puzzle feels too easy or too demanding, move up or down on that same site rather than assuming its label matches another site’s scale.
For a starting point with documented controls, Sudoku.com’s page lists multiple difficulty levels, Notes, Hint, Undo, and Erase. If a very large catalog is your priority, Web Sudoku describes its offering as billions of free puzzles; verify the current selection and controls yourself. The sources available here do not support a broader winner across five websites.
