Choose by the exact stick model and its operating system—not by the Fire TV name alone. Amazon now sells Fire TV Sticks running both Vega OS and Fire OS, and the difference matters if you rely on Android app sideloading. Before buying, confirm that your essential apps are available through that model’s official store, then compare picture formats, connectivity, and ecosystem.
Start by checking the exact model’s operating system
“Fire TV Stick” no longer identifies one software platform. Amazon’s device documentation lists the 2025 Fire TV Stick 4K Select with Vega OS 1.1, but lists the 2025 Fire TV Stick 4K Plus with Fire OS 8 / Android Level 30. Amazon describes Fire OS as a fork of Android; that description applies to Fire OS models, not automatically to Vega OS. Amazon’s Fire OS overview and device table explain the distinction.
Amazon’s developer portal also lists a 2026 Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen) and separately identifies the 4K Select and HD among its Vega OS devices. The model name and generation are therefore more useful than the broad Fire TV branding when you compare listings. Amazon’s Fire TV device portal provides the model information.

Make a short list of the apps you actually use—such as your subscription services, live-TV apps, or local-media tools—and confirm each one for the exact device and your country. The available information does not establish a complete, current app-by-app catalog across Vega OS, Fire OS, and Roku, so do not assume that support on one platform guarantees support on another.

This check is especially important if you install Android apps manually. Ars Technica reports Amazon’s position that newly released Fire TV Sticks will not support installing Android apps or other software from outside Amazon’s official app store. An APK that works on a Fire OS device should not be assumed to work on a Vega OS stick. Ars Technica’s report on Vega OS and app installation covers Amazon’s stated policy.
If an essential app is absent from the official listing—or you cannot verify its availability—choose a model that meets your needs through its supported installation route rather than counting on sideloading.

Compare the hardware features that affect your setup
For the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen) listed by Amazon in 2026, the portal specifies 4K Ultra HD, HDR10+, Wi-Fi 6, and direct power through a TV USB port. Check that your television supports the picture format you want, and that its USB port can provide suitable power before relying on a no-wall-adapter setup. These are listed features, not a guarantee of compatibility with every television. Amazon’s device specifications list the model’s features.

Roku is a reasonable alternative if you are open to leaving Amazon’s interface. Tom’s Guide names the Roku Streaming Stick Plus and Roku Streaming Stick 4K as options outside the Amazon ecosystem, and notes Dolby Vision support on the 4K model. Compare the HDR format with your TV and the content you watch; HDR10+ and Dolby Vision are distinct formats, and a stick’s support matters only if the rest of your setup can use it. Tom’s Guide’s streaming-device roundup discusses those Roku alternatives.

Choose the platform and interface you prefer
If you already use Alexa or prefer Amazon’s Fire TV environment, a Fire TV Stick may fit your setup—but check whether the specific model runs Vega OS or Fire OS and whether it has your must-have apps. If you prefer another interface or want to compare outside Amazon, include Roku in your shortlist and verify its current app and device details through official listings.
Amazon’s 2026 interface redesign is a separate change from the Vega OS transition. Amazon says the redesigned Fire TV interface began rolling out in February 2026 and, as of its June 22, 2026 update, was available worldwide on current-generation Fire TV Sticks. A redesigned interface does not by itself establish which operating system a model uses. Amazon’s Fire TV interface update announcement describes the rollout.

Use this quick buying checklist
- Identify the full model and generation. Find the product’s operating system in Amazon’s device information; do not infer it from “Fire TV Stick.”
- Verify your essential apps. Check the exact model’s official store listing for your region, especially if a particular service is non-negotiable.
- Decide whether sideloading is essential. If it is, do not choose a Vega OS device on the assumption that Android APKs will work.
- Match video features to your TV. Compare 4K support and the HDR formats you need, including HDR10+ or Dolby Vision.
- Check installation and network details. Confirm Wi-Fi support and whether your TV’s USB port is suitable if you intend to power the stick directly from it.
- Compare current local listings. Model names, availability, and prices can vary by country and change over time; confirm them at the retailer before ordering.
How to read Amazon’s speed claims
Amazon claimed that the newly announced Fire TV Stick 4K launches apps 35% faster and starts content up to 20% faster, figures reported by Android Central. These are Amazon’s claims, not independently verified comparative test results. Android Central’s launch report attributes those figures to Amazon.
Separately, Amazon said its redesigned interface produced speed gains of up to 20–30% in some cases on devices customers already own. That statement concerns the interface update, not an independent comparison of Vega OS against Fire OS or Roku. Amazon’s update announcement gives the context for its figure.
