Choose a spatial light modulator (SLM) by first matching its modulation method to your experiment and its specified wavelength to your laser. Then check pixel sampling and illuminated aperture, phase capability, response time, efficiency, and whether the device’s optical geometry fits your setup. A reflective phase-only LCOS SLM is a direct option for programmable phase control; a digital micromirror device (DMD) is a distinct route for binary-pattern methods. Neither is universally better, and a model recommendation is not meaningful until the experiment’s constraints are known.

Start with the field you need to control

Write down whether the experiment needs phase-only control, amplitude or intensity modulation, or a binary-pattern strategy. This decision determines which device architectures are relevant.

Phase-only control with LCOS

A reflective liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCOS) SLM is a direct choice when the experiment requires programmable phase control. Hamamatsu describes its X15213 series as reflective, pure-phase LCOS devices. That category description does not establish that every variant meets a particular experiment’s phase range, calibration, or wavefront-quality needs: check the exact model documentation and measure performance in the intended setup. See Hamamatsu’s X15213-01 specifications and the review Fundamentals of phase-only liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) devices.

Binary-pattern methods with a DMD

A DMD uses a different architecture. In a wavefront-shaping method, binary fringes can encode a desired field; a Fourier-plane filter selects the relevant diffraction order. The usable orders and angles depend on the wavelength, mirror pitch, and incident and outgoing geometry, so the algorithm and optical layout must be considered together. The practical guide A practical guide to digital micro-mirror devices (DMDs) for wavefront shaping explains this approach. Treat a DMD as a distinct design route, not an interchangeable phase-only LCOS device.

Match the laser wavelength and polarization

Record the laser’s center wavelength and bandwidth, then confirm that the exact SLM model is specified for that range. Manufacturer family names do not guarantee compatibility across wavelengths. For example, Hamamatsu specifies the X15213-01 for 400–700 nm and the X15213-15 for 1550 ± 50 nm. Those are model-specific ranges, not a general specification for LCOS devices.

Liquid-crystal devices also depend on polarization alignment. Consult the chosen model’s documentation for input polarization and any analyzer arrangement required; a wavelength match alone does not establish a complete optical prescription. Product specifications are available for the X15213-01 and X15213-15.

Check pixel sampling and illuminated aperture

Compare pixel pitch and addressable resolution with the spatial frequencies the experiment must reproduce, and compare the effective area with the beam diameter and relay optics. Pixel pitch affects sampling and spatial detail; pixel structure and fill factor also contribute to diffraction loss. A smaller pitch alone does not guarantee better system performance: phase response, fill factor, diffraction, and the optical relay all matter. Hamamatsu discusses diffraction-loss factors in its LCOS-SLM FAQ.

As a concrete reference, both cited X15213 variants list 1272 × 1024 pixels, 12.5 μm pitch, 96.8% fill factor, and a 15.9 × 12.8 mm effective area. These are specifications for those models, not a general SLM standard.

Compare optical response, not just display frame rate

For an LCOS SLM, the input frame rate and the liquid-crystal phase-transition response are different measures. Rise and fall times can differ substantially, and the transition relevant to an experiment may not be captured by the display interface’s refresh figure. If rapid feedback or high-throughput optimization matters, use the exact model’s response figures for the relevant transition and operating conditions, and verify end-to-end latency in the full system.

Hamamatsu model Specified wavelength Input frame rate Rise time Fall time
X15213-01 400–700 nm 60 Hz DVI 5 ms 25 ms
X15213-15 1550 ± 50 nm not stated on the cited product page 26 ms 135 ms

These manufacturer specifications describe different wavelength variants; they are not a controlled speed comparison under a shared wavelength or test condition.

Interpret efficiency figures in context

Use efficiency or light-utilization figures only with their stated wavelength and measurement conditions. Hamamatsu lists 79% light utilization for the X15213-01 at 633 nm and 97% for the X15213-15 at 1550 nm. Because the figures are for different wavelengths and model variants, they do not establish that one model is more efficient than the other. Pixel pitch, fill factor, liquid-crystal material, and optical configuration can all affect diffraction loss.

Make sure the optical layout suits the architecture

Reflective LCOS requires a folded beam path that allows the incident and reflected beams to be separated. A DMD’s mirror tilt and diffraction orders constrain its usable illumination and collection geometry; wavelength, pitch, and incidence and output angles are coupled design variables. Sketch the actual beam path—including any Fourier-plane filtering—before choosing a device, and verify that the required angles and aperture can be accommodated. The DMD guide covers binary fringe encoding and Fourier-plane filtering.

Use a model-level checklist before buying

Once the architecture and optical layout are settled, compare candidate models against the requirements that can determine whether the device will work in the experiment:

  • Modulation: phase-only, amplitude or intensity, or a binary-pattern method.
  • Wavelength: specified band versus laser center wavelength and bandwidth.
  • Sampling and aperture: pixel pitch, resolution, effective area, and illuminated beam diameter.
  • Phase performance: phase range, calibration, and wavefront quality for the exact model.
  • Optical throughput: fill factor and efficiency figures with wavelength and measurement conditions attached.
  • Timing: rise and fall response, input frame rate, and measured full-system update latency.
  • Integration: polarization requirements, reflective or transmissive beam path, DMD angles and diffraction orders, controller and software compatibility, and thermal needs.
  • Operating limits: laser power and damage limits for the intended beam size and operating conditions.
  • Purchase terms: current price, inventory, warranty, and return terms for the exact model.

The cited product information does not establish controller compatibility across manufacturers, laser damage limits, current inventory, price, warranty, or return terms. Confirm these directly with the vendor for the exact model and operating conditions rather than assuming they from a product family or architecture.
