For a student-scale solar car, choose the panel and motor as a matched pair: the panel must provide enough usable power for the motor in the sunlight you expect, and the motor must suit the car’s weight, wheels and gearing. Start with your project’s scale and rules, then compare component specifications and test the complete drivetrain. There is no universally correct panel wattage, motor voltage or gear ratio for every model car.

Start with the car’s scale and rules

Advice for a classroom model car does not automatically apply to a full-size road vehicle or collegiate solar racer. Before buying parts, identify the project type, the course or terrain, your budget and the governing event rules. Check dimensions, permitted motors and panels, mounting requirements, and whether batteries or other stored energy are allowed.

Rules can differ even between model-car events. For example, the Rochester Institute of Technology Dubai competition page, last updated 2026-10-02, sets a maximum size of 30 cm wide × 60 cm long × 30 cm high and requires one solar panel, one motor, remote control and secure panel mounting; it prohibits energy storage during the race. By contrast, Avenues in Motion’s 2026 Junior Solar Sprints resource says cars must also run on battery backup in poor weather. These are event-specific examples, not interchangeable standards. Read the current rules for your own event.

For full-size competition, consult the applicable competition rulebook rather than adapting model-car dimensions or component suggestions. The Solar Car Challenge rules page links to 2027 rules and updates and advises teams to check for updates: Solar Car Challenge rules.

Match the panel’s output to the motor

Check the panel’s stated electrical output and the motor’s operating requirements together. The panel needs to supply enough power for the motor to operate effectively under the lighting conditions you expect—not merely under ideal, direct sun. Consider how the car will be used, including likely shade or cloud, and whether the competition limits the number of panels or permits backup power.

Do not choose a panel by wattage or a motor by voltage in isolation. Compare the specifications for the exact parts you are considering, and confirm that they are compatible. The available guidance does not establish one “best” panel rating or motor model for all DIY cars. RIT Dubai’s judging guidance explicitly treats panel-and-motor compatibility as part of the design: RIT Dubai Solar Car Competition.

Choose gearing for the whole car

The motor alone does not determine how fast or reliably the car moves. Gear ratio, motor torque and RPM, wheel diameter, car mass and rolling resistance all affect the result. A gearing choice aimed at greater speed can trade away available torque, so assess the motor with the actual wheels and vehicle rather than choosing a ratio in isolation.

Use a simple, repeatable test process:

  1. Build a baseline. Assemble the car with the intended motor, panel, wheels and gears.
  2. Test on the relevant surface. Use a flat, sunny paved area and note the lighting and course conditions.
  3. Change one factor at a time. For example, adjust gearing without also changing the wheels or car mass.
  4. Record the results. Compare how consistently the car starts and runs, and how it performs over the course.

Science Buddies explains core solar-car concepts including gear ratio, torque, RPM and transmission. The Tasmanian Model Solar Challenge offers resources and a simulator that considers vehicle weight, aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance when examining race time. These tools can help narrow choices, but testing your own build remains important because its actual components and course determine the outcome.

Choose between a kit and a scratch build

A kit is a practical option if you want parts designed to work together. Depending on the kit, it may include only a panel and motor or a more complete set with chassis, axles, gears and wheels. Check the actual contents and electrical ratings before buying; a kit is not automatically suitable for every event.

For a scratch build, source the panel, motor and drivetrain components as a system. Science Buddies also describes using household or recycled materials for parts such as the chassis, axles, bearings, wheels and tires. Whatever route you choose, make sure the panel can be attached securely and the finished car complies with your event’s rules.

Mount and test the car safely

Secure the panel so it cannot shift or detach, especially if your event requires secure mounting. Test on a flat, sunny paved area, keep the car away from people and traffic, and account for a model that may move quickly. Follow the event’s requirements for dimensions, control, backup power and energy storage throughout testing and competition.
