Start with the devices you own and the ones you plan to add: record each exact model, its connection method and the smart-home platforms it supports. Then choose a hub that matches those requirements. In particular, check for Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee or Z-Wave support as needed, and confirm whether Matter-over-Thread devices require a Thread Border Router.

How do you know whether a smart home hub works with your devices?

Match the hub to both the devices’ connection technologies and the platform you want to use. A brand name or a Matter badge alone is not enough: check the exact device model and the functions you need in the platform’s compatibility information.

  1. Make an inventory. Write down each device’s exact model, the platform you want to control it from, and its connection method: Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee or Z-Wave. Include functions that matter to you, such as dimming, temperature readings or lock status.
  2. Compare the connection methods. A device and hub need a compatible way to communicate. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices need a hub or bridge that supports their respective protocol; Matter does not add those radios to a hub that lacks them.
  3. Check platform and category support. Confirm that the target platform supports both the device category and the features you intend to use. Support can vary by platform, app, model and software version.
  4. Check Thread Border Router support. If any planned device uses Matter over Thread, make sure your setup includes a Thread Border Router. A device can be a Matter hub without having this capability.
  5. Review setup requirements. Check the hub’s network, phone and app requirements before buying or pairing devices.

What Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi, Zigbee and Z-Wave do—and do not do

These terms describe different parts of a smart-home setup. Matter is an interoperability standard; Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee and Z-Wave are connection technologies. Matter devices can communicate over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread, but Matter support does not make every device feature available on every platform.

  • Wi-Fi: A network technology used by some smart-home devices, including some Matter devices.
  • Thread: A wireless mesh technology used by some Matter devices. A Thread device needs a Thread Border Router to connect to the home network.
  • Zigbee and Z-Wave: Protocols used by many existing smart-home products. A hub needs the relevant support, or the device needs a compatible bridge.
  • Matter: A standard intended to help compatible devices work across smart-home platforms. It does not guarantee that every category, feature or legacy device works in every app.

Thread and Matter are related but not interchangeable: Thread is one network option for Matter devices, while Matter can also run over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Amazon’s developer documentation describes Thread as an IPv6 wireless mesh technology designed for security, reliability and scalability. Amazon’s Thread support documentation was last updated May 1, 2026.

Which hub capabilities should you compare?

What to compare Why it matters
Ecosystem and voice-assistant fit The hub must work with the platform and control method you plan to use.
Supported radios and standards Match Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave and Matter support to the devices in your inventory.
Thread Border Router capability Required in the setup for Matter-over-Thread devices; not every Matter hub includes it.
Legacy-device connection Determine whether non-Matter Zigbee or Z-Wave products can join the hub directly or need a separate bridge.
Device categories and features Check that the platform supports the specific categories and functions you need, not just Matter in general.
Network and local-control needs Review the platform’s setup requirements and whether its documentation supports the local control you expect.

Do you need a hub for Matter?

It depends on the device’s connection type and the platform. Matter devices need a way to communicate with the smart-home platform. For Google Home, Google’s setup guidance requires a Matter hub; Matter-over-Thread devices also require a Thread Border Router. Other platforms have their own model and category requirements, so check the current documentation for the platform you plan to use.

A hub does not have to be a standalone box. Google lists compatible speakers, displays, routers and streamers as Matter hubs, with Thread Border Router capability varying by model. Its current Matter hub guidance lists examples including Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Wifi Pro and Google TV Streamer 4K. Verify the specific model and its Thread support before relying on it.

Can one hub control devices from different brands?

Often, if the devices and platform share a supported protocol and category. Matter is designed to help devices from different manufacturers interoperate, and Matter Multi-Admin can allow a compatible device to connect to more than one smart-home platform. Neither guarantees that every feature will appear in every platform. Amazon’s Matter documentation describes compatible Echo devices acting as Matter administrators and controlling supported devices locally; it also notes that model and device-type support varies.

For devices that do not use Matter, check the hub’s own radios and bridge support. A Matter-only hub will not directly connect to a Zigbee or Z-Wave device unless it also supports that protocol or the device is connected through a compatible bridge.

What to check before setting up a Google Home Matter device

Google’s published setup instructions specify requirements for its Google Home flow. These are platform-specific details, not universal Matter requirements; consult Google’s current setup instructions for the latest supported devices and software.

  • IPv6 enabled on the home Wi-Fi network.
  • A Matter hub; a Thread Border Router as well if the device uses Thread.
  • Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or higher for pairing.
  • For the documented flow, Android 8.1 or later with the specified Google Play services version, or iOS 16.5 or later, and the latest Google Home app.

Google’s compatibility page lists Matter categories including lighting and electrical devices, climate controls, safety and security products, window coverings, media devices, sensors, and controllers or bridges. It says support continues to expand, so check the exact product and required features rather than assuming all Matter functions are available.

Will Matter replace your existing smart-home devices?

Not automatically. Google says existing Works with Google Home devices remain supported, and some manufacturers may update products to support Matter. That does not mean every older model will receive an update. Check the manufacturer’s announcement for the exact model, and keep any required hub or bridge for devices that still rely on Zigbee, Z-Wave or another connection method.

A practical shortlist checklist

  • Does the candidate work with your chosen ecosystem and phone app?
  • Does it support every connection protocol your current and planned devices use?
  • If you have Matter-over-Thread devices, does your setup include a Thread Border Router?
  • Can your non-Matter devices connect directly, or will they need a separate bridge?
  • Does the platform support each required device category and feature?
  • Do your home network, phone and app meet the documented setup requirements?
  • If you expect local control, does the platform documentation confirm it for the specific device and hub?
