Choose a helmet intended for skateboarding and labeled as meeting ASTM F1492, then confirm it fits the wearer securely and comfortably. ASTM lists its active skateboard and trick roller skating specification as F1492-25; check the helmet’s own label and manufacturer documentation rather than relying on a generic product description. Measure the wearer’s head, use the particular brand’s size chart, and try the helmet on with its straps adjusted.

Which safety standard should a skateboard helmet meet?

For skateboarding, look for an explicit ASTM F1492 compliance claim. ASTM describes F1492 as the specification for helmets used in skateboarding and trick roller skating; its current listing is F1492-25, listed as active and last updated October 28, 2025. ASTM says a compliance claim covers all requirements of the specification: partial compliance is not enough, and a helmet that fails any requirement has failed the specification.

Check the actual helmet label and its manufacturer documentation for the claim. A retailer’s broad description alone does not establish that a particular helmet meets the standard. ASTM’s public listing summarizes the specification, but does not provide its complete text; do not assume it uses tests identical to bicycle helmet rules.

How skateboard and bicycle helmet claims differ in the United States

CPSC says helmets marketed exclusively for skateboarding are outside U.S. bicycle helmet requirements. A helmet marketed for bicycling—or promoted in a way that would lead a reasonable consumer to understand bicycling as an intended use—may be treated as a bicycle helmet. For a multipurpose helmet, check its stated activities and the applicable claims rather than treating skateboard and bicycle standards as interchangeable. See the CPSC Bicycle Helmets Business Guidance.

CPSC’s 2022 activity chart recommends a skateboard helmet for skateboarding, longboarding, and aggressive or trick roller and inline skating, and identifies ASTM F1492 and Snell N-94. Its footnote says helmets meeting the cited multi-impact standards are designed for more than one moderate impact, but protection is limited to a number of impacts; follow the manufacturer’s directions and replace a visibly damaged helmet.

How to measure and choose a size

  1. Bring the intended wearer to try helmets on, if possible. Measure around the head just above the eyebrows and ears, keeping the tape level from front to back.
  2. Compare that measurement with the sizing chart for the specific brand. Helmet sizing varies by brand, so a size label by itself is not enough to confirm fit.
  3. Try the helmet with the hairstyle the wearer will have while skating. Hair can change how it fits; ask the wearer whether it feels snug without painful pressure or a headache.

These measurement and fit recommendations come from the CDC HEADS UP Skateboard Helmet Fact Sheet.

How a skateboard helmet should fit

Position, coverage, and vision

The helmet should sit neither too high nor too low. Its front rim should align with the eyebrows, while the back should not touch the top of the neck. Check that the wearer can see forward and side to side. There should be no gaps between the padding and the head, but the helmet should not create uncomfortable pressure.

Straps and stability

  1. Adjust the side straps so they form a V below and slightly in front of each ear.
  2. Center and fasten the chin strap. One or two fingers should fit beneath it.
  3. Have the wearer open their mouth widely. The helmet should pull down as the mouth opens.
  4. With the strap fastened, check that the helmet does not shift back to front or side to side. Readjust if it moves. If it cannot be made both stable and comfortable, try another size or shape.

What to compare when choosing between helmets

  • Activity and standard: Confirm an explicit skateboard-use claim and traceable ASTM F1492 compliance. For a multipurpose helmet, check all stated activities and applicable requirements.
  • Size and shape: Compare the wearer’s measured head circumference with the brand’s size range, then verify the fit in person where possible.
  • Adjustability: Check whether the available pads or adjustment system can produce a snug, stable fit without discomfort.
  • Coverage and vision: Confirm the helmet can sit in the intended position without limiting forward or side vision.
  • Straps: Make sure the side straps can be positioned correctly and the fastened helmet stays stable during the movement check.
  • Replacement guidance: Read the manufacturer’s instructions for impact, damage, and wear. A multi-impact description does not mean protection is unlimited.

What a skateboard helmet can—and cannot—do

A helmet does not eliminate concussion risk. The CDC’s skateboard fact sheet puts it plainly: “There is no concussion-proof helmet, but a skateboard helmet can help protect your child or teen from a serious brain or head injury.”
