For an ideally band-limited signal, the rate must be greater than twice its highest frequency; that is a theoretical floor, not a universal setting. Real signals, filters, instruments, and measurement goals all affect the rate that makes sense.
Start with the signal you need to capture
Identify the highest frequency component that matters to your measurement. For a simple sine wave, that is its frequency. A complex waveform may include significant harmonics, while a fast edge or transient can contain higher-frequency content than its repetition rate suggests. Include those components if they matter to the result.
If the input includes frequencies you do not need, decide whether they can be removed with filtering. This distinction is important: the sampling rate should serve the bandwidth you want to preserve, while unwanted content above that bandwidth needs to be controlled before conversion.
Calculate the theoretical minimum
For a signal with no frequency content above fmax, the Nyquist–Shannon condition is fs > 2 × fmax. In other words, the sampling rate must be greater than twice the highest frequency of interest. The Nyquist frequency is half the sampling rate. Chris Donahue’s 2026 CMU text states the ideal reconstruction condition as fs > 2fmax (CMU computer music text).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

Do not treat exactly twice the highest frequency as a comfortable practical choice. The theorem assumes a band-limited signal and ideal conditions. If energy above the Nyquist frequency reaches the converter, it can appear as a false lower-frequency component, or alias, in the recorded data.
Choose a practical margin for the task
Sampling faster than the theoretical minimum can make waveform shape and short events easier to represent, but there is no one oversampling multiplier that suits every measurement. National Instruments gives two useful, context-specific rules of thumb:

| Around 5× the signal frequency | NI’s oscilloscope tutorial, updated September 3, 2026 | Practical oscilloscope guidance, not a theorem or universal requirement |
| At least 10× the maximum frequency | NI’s Engineer’s Guide to the Digitization of Analog Signals; publication year is not stated in the opened guide | Guidance for representing signal shape; the guide illustrates a 1 kHz sine sampled at 10 kHz |
The numbers differ because they are practical recommendations, not competing definitions of Nyquist. Choose based on what you need to extract: identifying a frequency, measuring amplitude, describing waveform shape, timing a transient, and supporting a control loop can require different rates. See NI’s oscilloscope tutorial and digitization guide.
Prevent aliasing with the input path
A real analog signal may contain energy above the range you intend to represent, and a practical filter cannot switch from passing to rejecting frequencies instantaneously. An analog low-pass anti-aliasing filter placed before the ADC can attenuate out-of-band energy before sampling. The filter’s cutoff and transition band should fit the wanted signal bandwidth and the sampling rate; simply setting the ADC rate to the Nyquist floor does not remove unwanted input frequencies.

Check the full analog path, not just the ADC’s headline rate. For an oscilloscope, NI recommends bandwidth three to five times the highest frequency component of interest to reduce amplitude error. This is an instrument-bandwidth recommendation, separate from the sampling-rate rule. NI also notes that rise-time capability matters for pulses and steps.

- Input bandwidth: whether the analog front end passes the wanted frequencies with acceptable amplitude response.
- Rise time: whether the instrument can capture the transitions you need to inspect, especially for pulses and steps.
- Vertical resolution and accuracy: whether the instrument can resolve amplitude changes, and whether its accuracy is adequate. Resolution and accuracy are not the same.
- Acquisition capacity: whether memory can hold enough samples for the time interval and detail you need.
- Throughput and processing: whether the device, interface, and computer can sustain the data rate. Higher sample rates consume more processing resources, and some digitizers trade sampling speed against ADC resolution.
- Clock support: whether the instrument can generate the requested sample rate.
A higher rate can improve temporal detail, but it also produces more data and may increase processing demands or affect available resolution. Compare the specifications of the complete acquisition path against your actual requirement rather than choosing by sample rate alone.

Audacity’s manual describes 44,100 Hz as the audio CD sample rate and lists common audio rates including 8,000, 16,000, 22,050, 44,100, 48,000, 96,000, and 192,000 Hz. It discusses an approximate hearing range of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz and says 40,000 Hz is the theoretical minimum for representing that range; higher rates are commonly used to allow adequate anti-alias filtering. These examples illustrate why practical rates can exceed a theoretical minimum, but they do not show that a higher rate always improves audible results. See the Audacity digital audio manual.

A practical selection sequence
- Define the measurement. Write down the highest frequency, harmonic, edge, or transient detail that must be represented.
- Set the theoretical floor. Calculate a rate greater than twice that maximum frequency.
- Add a task-appropriate margin. Decide how much detail is needed for shape, timing, amplitude, or frequency analysis; treat the 5× and 10× recommendations above as contextual guidance.
- Verify filtering and bandwidth. Confirm that unwanted out-of-band energy is attenuated before the ADC and that the analog input path can pass the wanted signal.
- Check operating limits. Confirm sample-rate, resolution, memory, throughput, processing, and clock constraints for the instrument and data system.
- Validate against the requirement. Test the acquisition setup with the actual waveform or a representative signal and confirm that the measurement meets its accuracy and timing needs.
