To mirror a device to a TV, use a method both devices support: AirPlay for iPhone or iPad, Google Cast or a device maker’s screen-sharing feature for Android, and Miracast for a compatible Windows PC. The TV must have the matching receiver built in or use a compatible streaming device or adapter; “any TV” is not a compatibility guarantee.

If you only want to play a video or photo, use the app’s Cast or AirPlay control when available. Choose screen mirroring when you need to show the whole interface. If wireless options don’t match, a compatible wired HDMI connection may work.

Choose the method your devices support

AirPlay, Google Cast, and Miracast are different systems. A TV that supports one does not necessarily support the others. Check the TV’s settings or model specifications, and confirm that your source device supports the selected method.

Source device Wireless route What you need Network or compatibility notes
iPhone or iPad AirPlay screen mirroring Apple TV or an AirPlay-compatible TV Connect the device and receiver to the same Wi-Fi network.
Android phone or tablet Google Home screen casting, or a manufacturer feature such as Samsung Smart View A compatible Google streaming device or a supported TV and phone combination Google’s documented Google Home method requires Android 8.0 or later and the phone and streaming device on the same Wi-Fi. Manufacturer features can be model-specific.
Windows PC Miracast projection A PC and TV or attached adapter that both support Miracast Use Windows+K to connect; Windows+P selects how the displays behave.
Computer using Chrome Google Cast from Chrome A compatible Google Cast receiver or TV Google recommends a strong connection to the same Wi-Fi network.
Compatible phone, tablet, or computer Wired HDMI Video output supported by the device, a compatible adapter if needed, and a TV HDMI input A USB-C port alone does not establish that the device can output video.

For app video, prefer the app’s own Cast or AirPlay control if it offers one: that sends supported content rather than necessarily duplicating the whole display. Some apps do not support AirPlay. Apple’s AirPlay instructions explain screen mirroring and note that app support can vary.

Use the TV maker’s screen-sharing feature

Some Android phones and TVs have their own screen-sharing route. For supported Samsung phones and Samsung TVs, Samsung documents using SmartThings and Smart View. On supported LG TVs, LG describes opening Quick Settings, choosing Screen Share (which may appear as Smart View or a similar name), selecting the TV, and accepting the request on the TV. The exact menu and compatibility depend on the models; these instructions do not imply that every Android device works with every TV.

Project a Windows PC to a Miracast display

  1. Turn on the TV and any Miracast adapter connected to it.
  2. On the PC, press Windows+K and select the wireless display.
  3. Press Windows+P to choose a display mode: Duplicate shows the same picture on both screens, while Extend spreads the desktop across them. Other modes may also be available.

The PC and receiver both need compatible Miracast support. See Microsoft’s instructions for screen mirroring and projecting, which cover Windows 11 and Windows 10. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.

Cast from Chrome on a computer

  1. Use an updated Chrome browser and a compatible Google Cast receiver or TV. Google recommends a strong connection to the same Wi-Fi network for the computer and receiver.
  2. In Chrome, open More, then choose Cast, save and share and Cast.
  3. Select the TV or receiver. To show the whole computer display, choose Sources and then Cast screen.

If you want the audio to play through the TV, casting a browser tab is often the better choice: Google notes that audio from a full-screen cast may continue playing on the computer, while tab audio is routed to the TV. See Google’s instructions for casting from Chrome.

Use a wired HDMI connection when wireless mirroring is not an option

A wired connection can bypass a mismatch between wireless systems, but only if the source device supports video output through its port. For a compatible device with USB-C video output, connect a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter to the device, connect an HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV, then select that HDMI input on the TV. Samsung documents this option for compatible devices and cautions that performance with third-party adapters cannot be guaranteed. Check the device’s specifications before buying an adapter; a USB-C connector by itself does not guarantee video output. Samsung’s support guide describes its wired option.

Troubleshoot a TV that does not appear or a picture that stutters

The TV or receiver is missing from the device list

  • Check that the source and TV or receiver support the same connection method. For example, an AirPlay-only receiver will not become a Miracast receiver.
  • For AirPlay or Google Cast, verify that both devices meet the method’s Wi-Fi requirements. Turn on the TV’s AirPlay or screen-sharing receiver if required.
  • Make sure the receiver is discoverable and accept any connection request on the TV.
  • For Google Home screen mirroring on Android, check the Android version, receiver compatibility, same-Wi-Fi connection, and the Google Play Services microphone permission specified in Google’s setup.

LG identifies different Wi-Fi networks and disabled AirPlay as possible reasons an iPhone may not find an LG TV. Samsung also lists network mismatch, disabled mirroring, and an unaccepted TV permission as possible blockers. These causes depend on the device and setup; see the specific guides for LG and Samsung.

The wireless picture stutters

Wireless mirroring depends on network quality. LG suggests reducing obstacles and staying close to the router; this may help, but it is not a guaranteed fix. LG’s troubleshooting guidance is specific to its support context.

A video app will not mirror

Some apps do not support AirPlay or full-screen mirroring. Look for the app’s own Cast or AirPlay control, or check whether the app has a version for the TV. Apple notes AirPlay support varies by app, and Samsung’s guidance also recognizes that app support can differ.

An iPhone cannot find an LG TV

In addition to confirming the same Wi-Fi network and enabling AirPlay on the TV, LG says a DFS Wi-Fi channel may interfere on its standard models. This is an LG-specific troubleshooting possibility, not a universal explanation for AirPlay discovery problems.
