Choose the Galaxy model and storage that fit your needs first; then compare carrier offers by the total you would pay for both the phone and service over the time you expect to stay. A phone advertised as “free” or discounted may depend on a qualifying plan, a long installment term, trade-in eligibility, and bill credits that arrive over time.
1. Choose the Galaxy model and storage first
Do not let the size of a carrier promotion decide which phone you buy. Start with the model and storage you would choose at the regular price, then compare how each purchase option changes the total.
Samsung’s U.S. Galaxy S26 pages listed 256GB and 512GB configurations and carrier purchase options when checked for this article. Those pages and prices can change, so confirm the exact model, storage, and checkout price on the day you buy: Samsung’s Galaxy S26 U.S. purchase page. A configuration available through one checkout or carrier may not be available through another.
2. Compare the full cost over your likely time with the carrier
A device’s monthly installment is only one part of the bill. Compare the cost of the phone and required service over a realistic period for you, including any plan you would not otherwise choose. Use the same time horizon for every offer.

- Set your time horizon. Choose how long you realistically expect to keep the phone and carrier service, rather than assuming you will remain for the full financing term.
- Record the phone cost. Note the upfront payment, installment amount and length, and any immediate discount.
- Record service costs. Include the required plan price for the same period. If the qualifying plan costs more than your current or preferred plan, include that difference.
- Account for credits carefully. Separate upfront discounts from monthly bill credits, and note when credits begin and what conditions apply to keeping them.
- Include other charges shown in the offer. Check the checkout and agreement for fees, taxes, and any trade-in chargeback or other consequence if eligibility terms are not met.
- Compare the resulting totals. Calculate phone plus service for each option over your time horizon, rather than comparing advertised phone payments alone.
Promotional credits may be conditional rather than an immediate reduction in what you pay. For example, an AT&T announcement for the 2026 Galaxy S26 launch described eligible discounts as 36 monthly bill credits tied to a qualifying installment plan and eligible unlimited plan. 3. Compare the offers side by side
Fill in this table from the exact carrier checkout and terms you are considering. Do not leave an unclear term implicit: ask the carrier or consult the written agreement before accepting.

Use the carrier’s current offer for the exact phone and your account. A promotion’s headline amount may not apply to every trade-in device, plan, account, or buyer.
4. Understand whether trade-in value is immediate or paid later
“Trade-in credit” can describe different payment arrangements. Samsung distinguishes its instant trade-in credit from carrier bill-credit promotions. Samsung says instant trade-in credit applies toward a qualifying new Galaxy purchase; carrier trade-in offers instead apply credits in monthly installments on billing statements. Samsung says carrier bill credits generally take one to three billing cycles to appear after the trade-in is accepted. That means the timing and payment form matter, not just the advertised trade-in value. Confirm who receives the old device, how the credit is issued, and what happens if the device is rejected or does not meet the offer terms.
5. Check trade-in rules before sending your old phone
Read the conditions attached to the specific checkout; eligibility, device condition rules, and deadlines can vary by offer. Samsung’s general FAQ describes conditions that can include powering on, having a functioning display, and disabling anti-theft locks. Do not assume those general examples are the complete terms for a particular carrier promotion.

For its March 2026 Galaxy S26 launch offer, Samsung required an eligible, owned device meeting the offer’s condition requirements to be shipped within 15 days of receiving the new purchase. Samsung said it could charge back the applied trade-in credit if the device was late or failed review. - Confirm that your exact old-device model is eligible and that you own it as required.
- Check condition requirements, including any rules for power, display, and anti-theft locks.
- Find the submission deadline and the required shipping or handoff method.
- Identify the party receiving the device and the consequences if it arrives late or fails inspection.
6. Check what happens if you leave early or want an unlocked phone
Before accepting a carrier offer, inspect the current written terms for what happens if you cancel service, change plans, pay off the phone early, or leave before all bill credits are issued. Also check the carrier’s current device-unlock policy and when the phone qualifies to be unlocked. These policies can differ by carrier and offer, so do not assume that a carrier-purchased Galaxy has the same payoff or unlock terms as another purchase.

Ask the carrier to point to the exact terms that apply to your account and offer, and consider saving a copy. If the answer is unclear, do not count future credits as guaranteed savings in your comparison.
7. Make the decision using your own costs and constraints
- A carrier offer may suit you if its required plan is one you would choose anyway, the full cost over your likely stay is competitive, and you can meet the offer’s trade-in and credit conditions.
- A different purchase route may suit you better if the required plan raises your costs, you may leave before credits finish, or the offer’s payoff, trade-in, or unlock terms do not fit your needs.
The result is personal: compare the exact phone and storage you want, the full phone-and-service cost, the form and timing of credits, and the consequences of changing carriers against the terms in the offer you are considering.
