Google recommends Google Play, but Android also allows apps from other sources. No store label or single security feature proves that every app is safe.
Compare the store on the things it is responsible for
Google says third-party stores set their own security and privacy practices. Google Play does not review every app in those stores, and it does not manage their downloads, payments, or updates. If something goes wrong with an app obtained through a third-party store, Google directs users to that store’s developer for support. Use those responsibilities to compare stores before installing.

Start with Google Play, but assess the app too
Google recommends Google Play and warns that installing apps from unknown sources can put a device and personal information at risk. For apps in Play, Google recommends looking at ratings, download counts, and individual reviews. Treat these as context: they do not establish that an app is safe, and the guidance does not define a universal ranking system that can be applied across all stores.
Understand what Play Protect does—and does not do
Google Play Protect checks apps from Google Play before download and scans a device for potentially harmful apps from other sources. Depending on what it detects, it may warn about, block, disable, or remove an app. That makes it a useful security layer, not an endorsement of every third-party store or a substitute for checking an app and its operator. Google says Play does not review every app in other stores.

Check developer verification rules for your device and location
Android developer verification is an identity and app-registration check for applicable certified Android devices. Google distinguishes that check from reviewing an app’s content or the source it came from, so verification is not proof that an app is safe.
Google’s Android Help describes an initial rollout starting in September 2026 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand through participating stores. Its Android Developer Console guidance specifies September 30, 2026, for Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand and also notes that the scope is certified devices. Google describes a broader global rollout across installation sources as planned for 2027. Because rollout details can vary by place and change, check the latest official Android guidance for your country and device before relying on a particular rule. Google says sideloading remains part of Android.

Make the choice before installing
- Identify the operator. Find the store’s operator and support contact. If you cannot tell who is responsible, you will have little recourse for store-specific download, payment, or update problems.
- Read its stated practices. Look for clear information about app screening and privacy. Do not assume that Play Protect means Google has reviewed apps offered by another store.
- Confirm the app lifecycle. Before buying or installing, establish which store handles updates and who to contact about a transaction or an app problem.
- Check the app listing. For Google Play listings, consider ratings, download counts, and individual reviews as imperfect signals—not safety guarantees.
- Check local applicability. Consult current Android guidance for developer verification on your certified device and in your region.
If a store does not make its operator, practices, and support route clear, choose a more accountable source. No comparative safety ranking of individual stores is established by Google’s general guidance.
