The number printed on the limbs is only a starting point: your actual draw weight depends on how far you draw the bow. Before buying, confirm that the limbs fit the riser and choose arrows using the shaft maker’s chart for your real setup.
Start with draw length, not a bow-size guess
Draw length is the key measurement for estimating recurve bow length. Have a coach or club instructor measure it while you use consistent shooting form; the measurement is not the same as arrow length. Archery GB’s 2022 instructor handbook describes measuring from the arrow nock to the button hole and gives an instructor fit check: stand the lower limb on the archer’s foot with the bow upright; the upper limb should extend above the mouth. Treat this as a practical check, not a substitute for individual fitting.
World Archery’s 2017 first-bow guide offers a rough rule of thumb: overall bow height in inches should be about draw length in inches plus 40. It describes 66–72 inches as a common range for standard setups, with more variation for youth bows. These figures are starting guidance, not universal sizing standards; limb-maker specifications and an in-person assessment should take precedence. World Archery’s first-bow guide
Choose draw weight for control and repeatable form
Draw weight, often called poundage, is the force needed to draw the string. For a beginner, prioritize a bow that can be drawn and held without strain or discomfort throughout practice. If the weight disrupts posture, makes it difficult to hold steady, or causes form to deteriorate, it is too heavy for the archer now.

Archery GB’s 2022 instructor handbook recommends no more than 18 lb as marked on the limb for beginners; it notes that a lighter weight may suit someone depending on size, age, and physical capacity. This is general instructor guidance, not an across-the-board prescription for every adult. World Archery’s 2017 first-bow article says most adults use 18–32 lb and advises buyers who have already been shooting to choose a first purchased limb weight similar to, or slightly above, what they have used. That range describes adults in that buying context; it is not a beginner weight table. World Archery’s buying guidance
World Archery advises building strength and technique before increasing weight. Elite competition figures are not targets for recreational or beginner archers: its 2018 account estimated that men’s recurve archers averaged around 48–50 lb at the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup Final. For safe progression, World Archery’s draw-weight guidance quotes archer Brady Ellison: “You want to shoot whatever you can control and you always want to be in control of the bow.”

Check the weight at your actual draw
The weight printed on a limb is associated with a reference draw length, so it may not equal the force a particular archer pulls. Archery GB’s 2022 handbook uses about 2 lb more per inch beyond a 28-inch reference in its beginner example. That is an approximation, not a precise conversion for every bow. Ask a coach or specialist shop to check the actual draw weight at your measured draw length, taking the bow and its measurement convention into account.
Confirm that limbs and riser fit each other
Do not assume that any recurve limb will fit any riser. World Archery notes that most available limbs use the ILF system, but screw-in and Hoyt Formula fittings are exceptions. Check the exact limb-to-riser interface and the component specifications before purchasing. Also verify the required string length for the chosen bow setup rather than relying on a generic assumption. World Archery’s equipment guidance

Match arrows to the finished setup
Arrow spine—the shaft’s stiffness—must suit the archer’s poundage at the achieved draw length. Use the arrow manufacturer’s spine chart for the actual setup, including the measured draw and draw weight; do not choose arrows from limb markings alone. The appropriate spine can change when limbs are replaced, so recheck the chart after a weight change. World Archery’s first-bow guide explains this relationship and recommends checking the manufacturer’s tuning information.

| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Draw-length match | Estimated overall bow length and limb-maker guidance for the measured draw. |
| Actual draw weight | Force at the archer’s real draw length, plus the ability to draw, hold, and shoot with sound form over practice. |
| Mechanical compatibility | Exact riser-to-limb fitting, string length, and component specifications. |
| Arrow match | Shaft spine from the arrow maker’s chart for actual draw length and poundage. |
| Handling | Riser grip, balance, weight, hand placement, straightness, and geometry. |
| Cost and progression | Whether beginner limbs can be rented or replaced affordably as strength and technique develop. |
World Archery recommends handling risers in a shop where possible: weight, balance, grip, and geometry affect how the bow feels and responds. A beginner course or club coach can help assess fit, and World Archery notes that many shops rent beginner limbs. Taking that advice before committing to a setup can help avoid buying unsuitable limbs, a mismatched riser, or arrows that do not fit the finished bow.

A practical buying sequence
- Complete an introductory course or ask a club coach for help. Learn the basics and get draw length measured using consistent form.
- Estimate bow length from that measurement. Use draw length plus about 40 inches only as a rough guide, then check the relevant limb specifications and individual fit.
- Select a manageable limb weight. Prioritize control and form; have the actual weight at your draw checked rather than treating the printed figure as exact.
- Verify the fitting before ordering. Confirm that the limb interface, riser, and string specifications are compatible.
- Select arrows last. Use the arrow manufacturer’s spine chart for the real draw length and draw weight.
- Reassess after a change. If limbs or draw length change, recheck actual weight and arrow spine rather than assuming the original arrows remain suitable.
