Choose a receipt printer from your POS provider’s current supported-hardware list, matching the exact model and connection to your register, operating system, and POS app. Then verify how that setup controls a cash drawer: through the printer’s drawer port, a direct supported connection, or a POS-supported service. A familiar brand or matching plug alone does not guarantee that receipts will print or the drawer will open.

Start with your POS software’s compatibility list

Before comparing printer features, identify the POS provider and app, register device, and operating system. Check the provider’s current hardware documentation for the printer’s exact model and interface variant—not just its brand or product family. Also confirm any required driver, printer language, or device profile. A printer can connect physically but still lack a profile the POS can use.

StoreConnect’s compatible hardware documentation illustrates why the model and workflow matter: it says its POS automatically recognizes selected devices, while some other ESC/POS or Star PRNT printers require a manually configured profile. Printing support does not necessarily mean that the POS can open a drawer connected to that printer. StoreConnect states, “Brand name alone does not establish compatibility.”

Choose a connection that fits the register

The right connection depends on what the POS supports and how the shop uses its checkout stations. Confirm the interface on the exact printer SKU; variants within one family may differ. For network or wireless models, check the POS’s setup requirements, such as device discovery, pairing, or being on the same network.

Connection When it may fit What to verify
USB A single wired register, if the POS supports that printer and interface. Supported model, operating system, driver or profile, and cable included or required.
Ethernet A supported network printer or a station setup that benefits from a network connection. Network configuration, addressing and discovery, POS support, and any connection limits. Square, for example, documents that Ethernet is unavailable in Offline Mode in its stated setup; check its current product-specific cash-drawer compatibility guidance.
Bluetooth An approved tablet or mobile checkout workflow. POS and operating-system support, pairing steps, and the exact supported device.
Wi-Fi A supported wireless setup where the POS and printer can communicate over the network. POS requirements, network conditions, and device discovery or configuration steps.
Serial Primarily a legacy or specialized POS installation. Port and cable, driver, and application support for the specific setup.

These are selection considerations, not guarantees that a connection type works with every POS. Spartan POS’s receipt-printer guide and POS hardware guide also emphasize checking hardware against the intended system.

Match the printer to the receipt and workflow

Thermal or impact

A thermal receipt printer is a typical small-retail choice when the POS supports the model. Confirm the paper width and roll dimensions the printer requires, and whether its supported profile fits the receipts you issue. An impact printer may suit a workflow that specifically needs its capabilities, such as certain kitchen-ticket setups, but it still needs explicit POS support.

  • The Thermal Printer does not require ink or toner. (Thermal paper roll required - 80mm or 3-1/8 inches paper width).

Paper width and receipt formatting

Set the POS receipt template to match the printer profile; paper width alone does not determine how many characters will fit cleanly on a line. StoreConnect documents configurable examples of 32 or 35 characters per line for 58 mm and 42, 44, or 48 for 80 mm, depending on printer support. These are StoreConnect POS settings, not universal capacities. A template laid out for 42 characters can wrap badly on a printer profile configured for 32.

Power, cutter, and placement

Check the exact model’s power requirements and whether its features suit the station’s placement and workflow. Do not infer a cutter or other capability from a family name; confirm it for the SKU and the POS-supported configuration.

Choose a drawer that the POS can actually open

A cash drawer may be driven by a compatible receipt printer’s drawer-kick (DK) port, connected directly through a supported interface, or controlled through a POS-supported service such as OPOS. The correct method depends on the POS application and the precise printer, drawer, port, cable, and software combination.

  • Printer-driven drawer: Confirm that the printer has a compatible drawer port, that the POS sends the supported opening command, and that the drawer cable matches both devices.
  • Direct connection: Use USB, network, or Bluetooth only if the POS and operating system support the particular drawer and connection.
  • POS service or OPOS: Verify the application’s support for the required service object and device, rather than assuming that platform support is enough.
  • Combined printer and drawer: A combined unit can reduce separate-device dependencies when the POS supports that exact model and connection.
  • Separate printer and drawer: This permits separate selection, but adds another compatibility link to confirm.

Microsoft’s Point of Service hardware support documentation describes network and Bluetooth receipt printing using Epson ESC/POS, as well as OPOS service objects; for drawers, it describes direct network or Bluetooth connections where supported, a supported printer’s DK port, or OPOS. This is Windows platform guidance, not a promise that every Windows POS app supports every device. Square likewise documents direct and printer-driven drawer options by its own POS products and connection types; consult its current compatibility table for the setup in use.

Verify the model, accessories, and setup before rollout

  1. Record the checkout setup: Write down the POS provider and app (including version if known), register device, and operating system.
  2. Find the current supported-hardware page: Locate the exact printer model and interface variant. If the page is unclear about a drawer, cable, or profile, confirm those details with the POS provider or a hardware specialist before ordering.
  3. Select the connection: Choose among supported wired, network, or wireless options based on whether the station is a single register, shared/networked station, or tablet/mobile workflow.
  4. Confirm printer and paper requirements: Check the printer language or profile, paper width and roll dimensions, power needs, and any workflow-critical features. Set the POS receipt template to the supported profile.
  5. Confirm the drawer path: Identify whether the drawer connects to the printer, directly to the register or network, or through a supported service. Match the drawer model and cable to the POS instructions.
  6. Check the exact package contents: Compare the SKU’s included power supply, USB or Ethernet cable, drawer cable, mounting pieces, paper, and other accessories with what the installation requires.
  7. Test one complete checkout: Before equipping multiple stations, print a receipt and complete a cash-sale test that should open the drawer. Check for correct formatting and successful opening in the actual workflow.

Examples show why support is specific to a POS

StoreConnect’s documented examples include Star Micronics mPOP (USB), a combined printer and drawer it says is automatically recognized, and Epson TM-T88IV, which it says is automatically recognized for receipt printing. StoreConnect says its documented POS cannot open a drawer connected to that Epson model or another ESC/POS printer, and names Star TSP143IV with a separate drawer as an alternative in that setup. Other ESC/POS or Star PRNT printers may print after manual profile configuration, while drawer support still depends on protocol. These are StoreConnect-specific examples, not universal recommendations; check its current supported-hardware page and your own POS’s documentation.

Likewise, Windows platform support for a printer or drawer connection does not establish app-level compatibility, and Square’s supported options apply to its own POS products. Compatibility lists and product SKUs can change, so use the current documentation for the exact setup before buying.
