Choose a portable SSD by matching its interface to your device, then weigh capacity, protection, warranty, and the price of the exact model available. A drive’s maximum advertised speed is not a promise of that speed on every computer or phone. The available product evidence supports several useful examples, but it does not establish a defensible eight-drive ranking or current prices—so this guide focuses on choosing well rather than inventing a top-eight list.

Start with the device you will connect

Check the port on the computer, phone, tablet, or camera that will use the drive. The host port, cable, and drive all affect the connection’s practical speed; a faster-rated SSD cannot make a slower host connection faster. Before paying extra for a high headline rate, verify the exact drive generation, interface, and included or compatible cable against your device.

Advertised sequential rates are maximums, not guarantees of sustained speed during every transfer. A review’s measured results describe its own test setup. For example, TechRadar’s 2026 portable SSD roundup reports test ranges for the Samsung T9 alongside its advertised maximum; neither should be treated as a universal result for every host or workload. Match capacity and protection to the job

Estimate the space needed for the files you will carry or back up, and compare the price per terabyte for the capacity you can actually buy. Prices and stock change, so a value judgment requires current prices for the exact model and capacity—not an old launch price. For travel or field use, compare the particular drive’s stated dust, water, and drop protection. An ingress rating describes protection under its specified test conditions; it does not mean a drive is indestructible or safe to immerse beyond its rating.

Portable SSD examples with verified details

These examples illustrate different trade-offs. They are not a ranked list, and the specifications below are model- and source-specific.

Drive What the cited source establishes What to verify before buying
Samsung T7 Shield, listed 1TB model Samsung’s US product listing specifies USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps), up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write, IP65, and a limited three-year warranty. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Samsung US listing Check current capacity options, price, and warranty terms for your sales region. Samsung’s support comparison describes T7 Shield capacities from 2TB to 4TB, while the cited product listing is for 1TB. Samsung support comparison
Samsung T9 Samsung includes the T9 in its portable SSD lineup, and TechRadar’s 2026 roundup reports a 2,000 MB/s advertised maximum alongside review test ranges. The headline maximum is not a guarantee of real-world sustained speed. TechRadar’s roundup Confirm the exact model’s interface and that your host can use its higher bandwidth; otherwise the extra speed may not help.
SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD, USB 3.2 model in the cited sheet SanDisk’s product data sheet advertises up to 2,000 MB/s read and write, describes a forged aluminum chassis used for heat management, and states a five-year limited warranty. These are manufacturer claims for the specified USB 3.2 model. SanDisk data sheet SanDisk has similarly named generations. Verify the exact generation, interface, protection claims, capacity, and regional warranty rather than assuming every Extreme PRO model shares these details.
Samsung T7 Samsung lists the T7 among drives internally evaluated for a specific iPhone recording workflow. The cited evidence does not establish a complete technical comparison for the exact T7 model you may buy. Samsung FAQ Check the exact regional product page for capacity, performance, protection, and warranty. Do not transfer the T7 Shield’s IP65 claim to the standard T7.
Crucial X9 PC Gamer describes the reviewed budget model as lacking an IP rating and metal casing. This is a source-specific description, not a claim about every SKU or current price. PC Gamer’s guide Verify the current SKU, price, and product details before treating it as a value pick.
Crucial X10 Pro and Kingston XS2000 Both appear as competitors in TechRadar’s 2026 roundup. The cited evidence does not provide enough official model specifications for a detailed comparison. TechRadar’s roundup Consult the manufacturer’s sheet for the exact capacity and interface, and confirm your host supports that interface.

For direct iPhone ProRes recording, check the whole setup

Samsung says its internal evaluation found that the T9, T7 Shield, and T7 can record ProRes 4K at 60 fps on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Samsung also cites Apple’s requirements for that mode: external storage must sustain at least 220 MB/s and have maximum power consumption below 4.5 W. This compatibility statement applies to Samsung’s stated evaluation and does not guarantee every capacity, cable, software version, or recording setup. Samsung’s FAQ and compatibility details

Check the file system before reformatting

Samsung says its portable SSDs ship formatted as exFAT. That statement applies to Samsung’s product family, not every brand or model. Check the requirements of your computer, phone, camera, and intended workflow before changing a drive’s format; reformatting can erase its contents. Samsung’s FAQ

A practical buying checklist

  1. Identify your host ports. Check the device specifications and the exact SSD interface; include the cable in the compatibility check.
  2. Choose capacity for your files. Compare the prices of the exact capacities available now, rather than relying on dated deal prices.
  3. Decide whether protection matters. Look for a stated ingress rating or drop claim on the exact model, and understand the limits of that claim.
  4. Compare warranty terms. Confirm duration and conditions for the model and region where you will buy it.
  5. Check workload-specific requirements. For phone recording or another demanding workflow, verify sustained performance, power, file system, and device compatibility—not just the peak speed on the box.
