Choose a portable power station by matching its continuous and surge output to the appliances you need to run, then matching its watt-hour capacity to how long you need them. Start with essential loads—medical devices and communications, then refrigeration and lighting—and plan how you will recharge it if the outage lasts.
Start with what must stay powered
List the devices you need during an outage, their power requirements, and when you expect to use them. Prioritize medical equipment and communications first, then refrigeration and lighting. Add discretionary devices only after you know the essentials fit.
- Check appliance labels or manuals for wattage. A plug-in watt meter can help measure actual use where practical.
- Mark devices with motors or compressors, such as refrigerators, because they can draw more power when starting than while running.
- Decide which appliances must run at the same time. The station must handle their combined demand.
Match output to appliance demand
Watts (W) measure power at a moment; watt-hours (Wh) measure stored energy. A station may have enough stored energy for an appliance but still fail to start it if the appliance’s momentary demand exceeds the station’s inverter capability.
Continuous output
Compare the station’s continuous AC output with the total wattage of appliances you plan to run simultaneously. Leave room for uncertainty rather than planning right up to the rating.

Startup surge
Check the station’s surge rating and compare it with the startup demand of any motor or compressor load. A surge figure describes brief peak output; it does not mean the station can sustain that wattage continuously. Check the actual appliance and station specifications rather than relying on a broad rule of thumb.
Estimate how long the stored energy may last
Use watts × hours = watt-hours to estimate energy use. For example, a device drawing 50W for 4 hours uses 200Wh before accounting for conversion losses. For appliances that cycle on and off, measured average consumption is more useful than assuming the nameplate wattage applies continuously.

Advanced BMS provides 12 safety protections, monitoring voltage, current & temperature. Powers your smartphone, laptop, mini-fridge, camera, and drone simultaneously.
- Estimate each load: multiply its expected average watts by the hours you will use it.
- Add the loads: total the energy for devices you expect to run over the same outage period.
- Allow headroom: inverter conversion, startup behavior, connected devices, and uncertain usage can reduce the usable energy available for your plan.
- Compare with capacity: check the station’s capacity in Wh. Energizer’s battery guidance gives the calculation Wh = V × Ah; product capacity is commonly published directly in Wh.
Advertised runtime is an estimate for the manufacturer’s stated load and conditions, not a promise for a different refrigerator or household. Runtime depends on stored energy, load size and cycling, conversion losses, and other connected devices.
Compare capacity, output, ports, and recharging
Capacity and output solve different problems: capacity relates to how much energy is stored, while output determines what the unit can power at once. Compare the full setup, not just a large headline number.

For scale, EcoFlow’s US product page lists the DELTA 2 at 1kWh of storage and 1800W of output, with an option to add an extra battery. EcoFlow estimates 7–14 hours for a 120W refrigerator; that is the manufacturer’s example, not an independent test or a guaranteed runtime for your refrigerator. Check EcoFlow’s current DELTA 2 specifications.
Jackery’s US page lists the Explorer 1000 v2 at 1070Wh capacity, 1500W rated AC output, a 3000W surge peak, LiFePO4 chemistry, and an approximate weight of 23.8lb. Check the current page for its charging and temperature specifications. These examples illustrate different product specifications; neither is automatically right for every outage plan. Plan for a long outage and safe use
For an extended power outage, check whether the exact station supports the charging methods you can realistically use. Solar charging depends on compatible panels and cables, the unit’s solar input limits, weather, and exposure conditions; do not assume a panel will keep up with your loads. Keep battery equipment dry and follow its manual.
If you need to power built-in household circuits, use only a compatible, professionally installed transfer arrangement. Never connect a station or generator to a wall outlet to energize house wiring; that can cause dangerous backfeed.

Protect food and plan medical power
FEMA’s 2023 power-outage guidance says a refrigerator keeps food cold for about 4 hours and a full freezer for about 48 hours when kept closed. It advises discarding refrigerated food exposed to 40°F or higher for more than 4 hours. These are food-safety planning figures, not runtime claims for a power station.
Charge phones and other devices before a storm, identify alternative charging sources, and prioritize what will be powered. If a medical device needs electricity, discuss an outage plan with a doctor in advance.
Keep combustion equipment outdoors
FEMA states: “Use generators, camp stoves or charcoal grills outdoors, at least 20 feet away from any building openings like windows, doors or garages.” This 20-foot rule concerns fuel-burning equipment and carbon monoxide risk. A battery power station does not emit combustion exhaust, but it still needs to be used according to its manual and protected from water.
