Choose a phone by comparing the exact model’s remaining software support, practical repair access, and the costs you are likely to face in your market. A long update promise or a high repairability score can help, but neither tells you by itself what the phone will cost to own.
Start with the years of support still left
Look up the manufacturer’s policy for the exact model—not just the brand or product family. Check when its support clock starts, the stated end date or duration, and whether the commitment covers both operating-system upgrades and security updates. Then compare the remaining period with how long you expect to keep the phone.
The purchase date does not necessarily start the support clock. A discounted older phone may have fewer supported years left than a newer model, even if its original support promise looks generous.
For example, Google’s current policy says Pixel 8 and later phones receive seven years of OS and security updates, while listed Pixel 6 and 7 family devices receive five years. Google counts those periods from the model’s first availability on the Google Store in the United States. Check the Google Pixel update policy for the specific phone and its dates; these promises should not be generalized to every Google phone or to other markets’ availability.

Check whether repairs are practical, not just possible
Repairability is about whether a repair can realistically be completed where you live, at a cost you can accept. Before buying, check:
- Whether replacement parts are sold for the exact model and are available in your country.
- Whether the manufacturer publishes repair instructions and offers service in your region.
- Whether independent repair providers can obtain parts and work on the phone.
- What the model-specific repair steps involve, including whether common repairs require extensive disassembly.
- Any repairability score, who awarded it, and which scoring rubric was used.
iFixit explains that its smartphone scores are based on teardown assessments, that its rubric changes, and that parts and instructions vary by manufacturer. Its smartphone repairability scores are useful for comparing models assessed under a contemporary rubric, but a score does not establish local parts availability, repair prices, warranty outcomes, or whether a phone fits your needs.

Compare price and likely repair costs in your market
For each candidate, record the current price for the exact storage configuration you would buy and obtain dated local quotes for repairs you consider plausible, such as a screen or battery replacement. Prices depend on country, seller, service provider, and date, so comparisons should use the same market and a clear date.
There is no verified market-wide current phone-price comparison or region-matched repair-cost comparison here. Do not infer that one brand or model is cheapest overall. If you calculate a cost per year, state the market, date, configuration, assumed years of use, and repair assumptions; otherwise the figure can suggest a precision the inputs do not support.

Weigh the options against your ownership plan
Use the same checklist for each specific model rather than letting one headline figure decide:

Example: Fairphone Gen. 6
Fairphone describes the Gen. 6 as repairable, states that it will receive software support through 2033, and advertises a five-year warranty. Its product page says iFixit awarded the model a repairability score in 2025; iFixit’s Fairphone repair page lists a 10/10 score for Fairphone models 2 through 6. iFixit notes that its scoring rubric is updated frequently, so treat that score as a comparison aid rather than a timeless measure.

Fairphone’s product page also describes an “average industry costs” comparison based on repair prices published on EU websites by three manufacturers between 28 and 31 July 2025. That is Fairphone’s stated methodology, not an independent current benchmark for all markets. Check Fairphone’s Gen. 6 product page for current regional availability, price, terms, and compatibility, and consult iFixit’s Fairphone repair guidance for repair information. These commitments and scores do not establish that the Gen. 6 is the best choice for every buyer or the lowest-cost phone to own.
