For most phones, you cannot choose a physical aperture: the lens opening is fixed. Use Portrait mode or its blur control for portraits, focus and exposure choices for landscapes, and Night mode with a steady phone for dim scenes. If your phone does have a true adjustable aperture, the best setting depends on whether you want more light and background blur or more depth of field.
What aperture means on a phone camera
Aperture is the opening in a lens that lets light reach the sensor. Its size is written as an f-number: a lower number means a wider opening, which admits more light and can create shallower depth of field; a higher number means a narrower opening, which admits less light and can keep more of the scene acceptably sharp. Google illustrates the relationship with f/1.8 and f/8 in its aperture overview.
That optical principle does not mean most phone cameras offer an aperture setting. On many smartphones the physical opening is fixed, and software estimates depth and applies background blur in Portrait mode. Google notes that phone sensors are small and their focal lengths short, so more of a scene tends to remain in focus than with larger-camera systems. For that reason, copying a DSLR f-stop recommendation onto a phone can be misleading.
Can you change aperture on your phone?
First identify whether the control changes the lens opening or only the rendered image. A control labelled “aperture” may be a virtual depth-effect slider. Most phones have a fixed physical aperture; a small number of specific models or camera modules have genuine variable aperture or model-specific manual controls. Availability can depend on the lens, capture mode, software version, and market.

- Physical aperture: Changes the lens opening. A wider opening admits more light; a narrower one can increase depth of field.
- Virtual aperture or blur control: Changes the software depth effect, not necessarily the lens opening. Huawei and HONOR document such virtual-aperture workflows.
- Other exposure controls: Shutter speed and ISO affect exposure, but they are not aperture. They may be available in a phone’s manual camera mode.
Examples show why checking the exact device matters. Apple documents manual aperture, shutter-speed, and white-balance controls for iPhone 18 Pro models in specified modes; this is not a general instruction for every iPhone. Samsung’s support material describes variable aperture on the Galaxy Note9, a historical example rather than guidance about current models. Check the official manual for your exact phone and selected camera module before relying on an aperture control.
Choose the approach that suits the scene
Portraits: use Portrait mode or a supported depth control
If your goal is a blurred background, start with Portrait mode. Pixel Portrait Mode uses machine learning to estimate depth and blur the background around the subject, according to Google’s explanation. On supported iPhones, Apple’s Depth Control/Aperture slider adjusts the blur effect, and the effect can be edited after capture; it should not be mistaken for a physical iris adjustment unless documentation for that exact phone says so. Some manufacturers provide their own virtual-aperture workflow. HONOR’s guide says to focus on the subject and drag the aperture slider; a smaller virtual f-number creates more background blur. It recommends keeping the subject within about 2 m (about 7 ft.) for that particular wide-aperture workflow. Treat that distance as HONOR-specific advice, not a universal portrait rule. With a real variable aperture, a wider setting can admit more light and make optical depth-of-field effects more available. The visible blur still depends on sensor size, focal length, distance to the subject, and processing; no f-number guarantees a dramatic result on every phone.

Landscapes: prioritize focus, lens, composition, and exposure
On a camera with a genuinely adjustable aperture, narrowing the opening (using a higher f-number) can increase depth of field. But most phone owners cannot stop down a fixed-aperture lens. Instead, choose the camera lens that fits the composition, tap or set focus on the detail that matters, keep the phone steady, and check exposure. This is a practical response to fixed phone apertures; it is not a hidden substitute f-stop control.
Night photos: let Night mode capture, unless motion matters more
If your phone has a fixed aperture, use Night mode when the scene is dim and keep the phone steady until capture finishes. Google says Pixel Night Sight analyzes motion and lighting, adjusts exposure settings, and combines multiple frames to make brighter, clearer images without flash. HONOR’s Night mode guidance likewise describes adjusting exposure time to ambient brightness and keeping the phone steady through the countdown. The exact behavior varies by phone.

Longer exposures can brighten a static scene but make moving subjects blur. LG’s manual-photography guide recommends slow shutter speeds for low-light scenes while emphasizing a steady phone or tripod; faster shutter speeds help freeze motion. If a person, pet, or vehicle is moving, prioritize a faster capture and accept that the image may be darker or noisier. A tripod can stabilize a phone for a slow exposure; it does not change aperture and may not be necessary for automatic Night mode. See LG’s manual photography guide.
How to compare aperture features between phones
Do not compare f-numbers alone. Confirm what each number or slider actually controls, and on which camera module and mode it works.

- Does the phone have a fixed physical opening, a true mechanical variable aperture, or a virtual blur control?
- Is control available on the main, ultra-wide, or telephoto camera, and in which modes?
- Can you adjust portrait depth after capture, or only before taking the photo?
- How does Night mode handle exposure and movement, and how steady must the phone stay?
- Does the camera app expose shutter speed or ISO if you need to balance brightness against motion blur?
Manufacturer documentation establishes feature behavior, not independent comparative image-quality results. Confirm current specifications and app support for the exact model and region you are considering.
