Choose a password manager you can use consistently on every device and browser where you handle money. Before moving bank, card, or brokerage logins into it, check its vault protection, multifactor authentication (MFA), recovery process, password-generation tools, and fit with the financial services you use. Then create a strong primary passphrase, replace reused passwords with unique ones, and enable MFA wherever available.

What a password manager should do for financial accounts

A password manager makes it practical to use a different, hard-to-guess password for every account without memorizing them all. NIST says password managers can generate unique, random passwords and securely store them. That matters for financial accounts because reusing a password means a password exposed through one service could put other accounts at risk.

The manager also creates a sensitive central vault, so choosing one is not simply a matter of finding the longest feature list. Look for a service whose protection you understand and whose everyday use and recovery arrangements you can live with.

Compare managers on the features that matter

Vault protection and sync

Read the provider’s explanation of how it protects stored data, including what is encrypted and what happens when vault data syncs between devices. Prefer clear documentation over broad security claims that do not explain the design. The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s password manager buyer’s guide discusses encryption at rest and the importance of a manager being both useful and usable.

MFA for the vault

Check whether you can protect the manager account with MFA, which requires another proof of identity in addition to the password. NIST explains that MFA can help protect an account even if its password is compromised, and lists authenticator apps, push notifications, text codes, and USB dongles as examples. These methods do not offer identical security; choose an option the provider supports on the devices you use and that you can reliably access. NCSC also recommends MFA for cloud-sync managers and for sensitive stored credentials.

A hardware security key is an optional MFA method, not a requirement. Confirm that the manager supports it and that you have a workable backup or recovery method before relying on a physical key.

Recovery if you lose access

Understand what happens if you forget the primary passphrase, lose a device, or need someone to access important information if you die or become incapacitated. Read the provider’s explanation rather than assuming a convenient recovery option preserves the same security properties as a vault only you can unlock. Decide what recovery arrangements you are comfortable with before storing every financial credential in one place.

Device, browser, and financial-site fit

Confirm that the manager works with your operating systems, browsers, and phones. Try signing in to the financial services you actually use: autofill may behave differently from one site or app to another, and not every institution necessarily supports the same workflows.

NIST’s current digital identity standard says verifiers should permit pasting a password when autofill APIs are unavailable, to facilitate password-manager use. This is a recommendation to services, not proof that every bank or brokerage implements it. If autofill does not work, check whether you can paste the password securely rather than weakening it to fit a site’s limitations. See NIST SP 800-63B.

Password generation and migration

Check that the manager can generate unique credentials and that you understand how to import or export your passwords. A migration should let you replace reused financial passwords methodically, not just move the same reused passwords into a new vault. Once you are confident the move is complete, remove unsecured copies, such as an old spreadsheet or document, rather than leaving another accessible list behind.

Plan limits and sharing

Compare current plan limits and prices on providers’ own pages; features and costs can change, and there is no single plan that suits everyone. Family sharing matters if you need it, but sharing a personal bank login for convenience is not a substitute for separate access through the financial institution.

Set up the manager for financial logins

  1. Choose and verify access. Confirm support for your devices and browsers, review the vault-protection and recovery explanations, and try the sign-in flow with your financial services before migrating everything.
  2. Create a long primary passphrase. NIST advises choosing a long passphrase and protecting it from theft. Make it memorable to you, keep it private, and do not store it in an unsecured note alongside the vault’s other credentials. See NIST’s password guidance.
  3. Turn on MFA for the manager. Select an available method you can use consistently. If choosing a hardware key, check compatibility and make sure you understand how you will recover access if the key is lost.
  4. Move and update financial accounts. Import or add credentials you need, then generate a distinct password for each bank, card, brokerage, or other financial login. Change reused passwords at the services themselves; storing a reused password more neatly does not make it unique.
  5. Enable MFA at each financial service that offers it. This is a separate setting from MFA on the password manager. Check each institution’s security options and use a supported method you can maintain.
  6. Test the routine and clean up. Sign in on the devices and browsers you normally use, checking autofill or paste behavior. After confirming that your credentials are present and usable, delete unsecured migration copies.

What the guidance does—and does not—establish

NIST and NCSC support the practical selection criteria above, but the guidance cited here does not establish a current ranking of consumer managers, comparable prices, specific providers’ recovery designs, or universal compatibility with financial institutions. Choose based on the provider’s current documentation and the behavior you verify with your own accounts, rather than treating any one service as universally best. NIST’s password-manager guidance is available in its SP 800-63 FAQ.
