Choose a password manager that works on the devices the older adult already uses, makes saving and filling logins understandable, supports multifactor authentication (MFA), and has a recovery plan they can follow. There is no established best password manager for older adults: try the setup together on their actual phone or computer before deciding.
Why use a password manager?
A password manager can generate and fill a different strong password for each account, so the user does not have to memorize them all. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends this approach in its January 2025 Online Safety Tips for Older Adults, which says: “Use a password manager to generate, save and fill in strong passwords, so they don’t need to be remembered.” NIST likewise recommends a password manager for accounts that require passwords.
Using a manager does not remove the need to protect access to the manager itself. Its main credential and recovery arrangements deserve careful thought because they govern access to the saved passwords.
What to check before choosing
Works with the devices and accounts already in use
Start with the person’s current phone, computer, browser, and the websites they use most. Check that the candidate supports those devices and that its autofill prompts are recognizable. A manager that works smoothly in the person’s everyday routine is more useful than one whose features they cannot comfortably use.

Comfortable setup and everyday use
Try reading the setup screens, saving a login, filling it on a familiar site, and using copy-and-paste if autofill does not appear. Check whether text and controls are easy to see and instructions make sense to the person. NIST’s digital identity guidance treats usability as a lifecycle concern: ordinary sign-in matters, but so do less frequent events such as recovery.
Let the older adult do the steps rather than assuming a relative should operate the account for them. A family recommendation or some coaching may help someone get started, but it is not a universal solution. The 2020 paper Why Older Adults (Don’t) Use Password Managers discusses adoption themes in its abstract; the available abstract does not establish a numerical adoption rate or a universally effective approach.

Security protections
Look for password generation, the ability to use unique passwords, and MFA support for the manager account. NIST recommends choosing a manager that supports MFA. When a person must create a password themselves, NIST’s guidance says it should be at least 15 characters; CISA’s older-adult sheet describes strong passwords as 16 or more characters, random, and unique. Those figures come from different guidance contexts and are not a product requirement or a minimum length imposed on every saved password.

Recovery and helper access
Before storing important logins, read the provider’s current recovery policy. Work out what the person would do if they forgot the manager credential or lost their main device, and where recovery information can be found without making it easy for others to misuse. Policies differ by service, so do not assume recovery works the same way across products.

If someone else may help, check whether the provider offers controlled sharing or emergency access, what information that feature exposes, and how the account owner can manage it. The older adult should understand and consent to any helper access; a relative does not automatically need to own the account. Verify feature details directly with the provider because availability and terms can change.
Cost and limits
Once a manager passes the usability, device, security, and recovery checks, compare its current price and account limits with the person’s needs. Do not choose on price alone before confirming that routine sign-in works for them.

How to compare options with the older adult
- List the devices and browsers in regular use. Include the phone and computer they actually reach for, not just devices a family member prefers.
- Shortlist reputable services. The FTC advises consulting expert reviews when choosing a third-party manager; check when each review was published and how it evaluated products before relying on a ranking. See the FTC’s Creating Strong Passwords and Other Ways To Protect Your Accounts.
- Try the basic tasks together. Have the older adult follow setup, save a login, sign in with autofill, and find the recovery instructions. Notice where they hesitate or need help.
- Discuss assistance and consent. Decide whether a helper needs any access and, if so, which controlled feature would provide only what is needed.
- Review current policies and terms. Confirm supported devices, MFA, recovery, sharing, price, and limits on the provider’s own current pages before settling on a service.
How to make the decision
Prefer the option the older adult can use confidently on their own devices and whose recovery process they understand. If a candidate’s autofill is confusing, setup is difficult to read, or recovery instructions are unclear, keep comparing rather than asking the person to adapt to a feature list. No cited official guidance establishes one vendor as the easiest, most accessible, or best for older adults.
