Choose a non-destructive testing (NDT) method by matching the inspection question—not just the material—to the flaw’s location and orientation, part geometry, access, surface condition, and required inspection procedure. Visual testing, penetrant testing, and magnetic particle testing focus on surface or near-surface indications; ultrasonic and radiographic testing can inspect internally; and electromagnetic testing is generally used on conductive materials. No method suits every part or finds every flaw.
Start with the flaw you need to find
NDT examines a part or structure without damaging it. Destructive testing, by contrast, damages a sample or coupon to evaluate its properties. The two approaches answer different questions; an NDT result is about indications detected in the inspected component, not a guarantee that it is free of every possible flaw. ASNT explains the distinction in its overview of nondestructive testing.
Before comparing methods, describe the target: for example, a surface-breaking crack, near-surface discontinuity, internal porosity, corrosion, wall loss, or lack of fusion. Estimate its depth and likely orientation, and state what decision the inspection must support. A method that can detect one class of indication may be poorly suited to another.
Compare the main NDT methods
| Method | Broad fit | Important constraints |
|---|---|---|
| Visual testing (VT) | Direct examination of visible surfaces, dimensions, and weld profile; often a useful first inspection. | Needs adequate lighting and a view of the area. It cannot reveal hidden subsurface flaws. Cleaning, access, and inspector skill matter; magnifiers and borescopes can help with viewing. |
| Liquid penetrant testing (PT) | Surface-breaking flaws in solid, nonporous materials. | Does not detect subsurface defects. The surface must permit penetrant entry and allow indications to be seen; cleaning and procedure control are important. |
| Magnetic particle testing (MT) | Surface and near-surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials. | Requires suitable magnetization and particle application. It is not suitable for non-ferromagnetic materials such as aluminum or austenitic stainless steel. |
| Ultrasonic testing (UT) | High-frequency sound can be used to inspect for surface and subsurface discontinuities; common applications include pressure vessels, machinery, and bridges. | Suitability depends on the technique, sound properties of the material, geometry, surface condition, access, and operator interpretation. A generic overview cannot establish a universal thickness or flaw-size threshold. |
| Radiographic testing (RT) | X-rays or gamma rays produce images of internal features; used on many materials, including castings, weldments, and assemblies. | The described setup requires access on both sides. Complex geometry and flaw orientation can limit detection. Ionizing radiation requires trained personnel and safeguards; radiography can create a lasting record. |
| Electromagnetic testing (ET), including eddy current | Conductive materials, especially for surface and near-surface discontinuities; some techniques also support material characterization and thickness measurement. | Conventional eddy-current testing is not suitable for nonconductors. Conductivity, permeability, frequency, surface condition, geometry, and electromagnetic noise affect interpretation and penetration. |
Shortlist a method in six steps
- Specify the inspection question. Name the discontinuity of concern and whether it is expected at the surface, near the surface, or internally.
- Describe the material and its condition. Note whether it is conductive or nonconductive, ferromagnetic or not, homogeneous or layered, and whether coating, roughness, temperature, or contamination could affect inspection.
- Describe the part and access. Provide thickness, shape, weld or casting form, access to each side, line of sight, and likely discontinuity orientation.
- Eliminate methods with a basic mismatch. Check whether the method’s physical principle fits the material and target—for example, conventional eddy current needs a conductor, while MT needs a ferromagnetic material.
- Compare the remaining candidates. Consider coverage, the sensitivity required for the job, inspection speed, record needs, preparation, safety, and cost. Do not infer a numeric detection capability from a general description of a method.
- Confirm the governing requirements. Have the responsible Level III or equivalent technical authority verify the applicable code, specification, written procedure, personnel qualification, and acceptance criteria. Consider complementary methods when one method’s blind spots matter.
Use material-to-method rules as filters, not final answers
Material properties can quickly rule out some options, but they do not select the inspection on their own. For instance, a conductive material may be a candidate for ET, but the target’s depth, geometry, surface condition, and electromagnetic noise still affect suitability. A ferromagnetic material permits consideration of MT, but the flaw must be within the method’s surface or near-surface scope and the part must be magnetized appropriately.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Likewise, an internal target does not automatically mean RT or UT is the right choice. The part’s shape, access, material properties, likely flaw orientation, and required record can change the decision. ASNT’s NDT method overview is a starting point for understanding broad applications, not a substitute for validating a method against the actual component and inspection requirements.
Account for visibility, preparation, and records
Surface condition and access can make an otherwise plausible method impractical. VT needs a usable view; PT depends on a suitably clean, accessible surface where penetrant indications can be seen; and UT can be affected by surface condition, geometry, and access. RT may provide a lasting image record, but its setup and geometry constraints must be addressed. Ask what preparation is permitted, what areas can be reached, how much coverage is required, and what form of record the project needs.

Visual testing is often a useful starting point, but it is not a substitute for methods that can reveal hidden flaws. ASNT identifies VT Level III Bruce Crouse’s description of VT as foundational because visual interpretation is involved across NDT methods, while also noting that VT depends on the inspector’s visual acuity and judgment. See ASNT’s visual testing overview.
Consider specialized methods for specific applications
Beyond the common methods, ASNT lists application-specific options. Acoustic emission can monitor energy released as cracks form or grow under stress; infrared or thermal testing looks for heat-pattern anomalies; ground-penetrating radar supports subsurface imaging; and guided waves can inspect long distances along structures such as pipelines. Laser methods support precise inspection or measurement, leak testing applies to pressurized systems, magnetic flux leakage can assess corrosion or pitting in steel, and microwave testing is used with dielectric materials and composites. These are alternatives to evaluate for a defined application, not a ranked list or universal replacements for VT, PT, MT, UT, RT, or ET.

Respect safety and acceptance requirements
Industrial radiography uses ionizing radiation. It must be planned and performed by suitably trained personnel with appropriate safeguards and applicable regulatory controls; this overview is not an operating procedure. Other methods also require appropriate technique and interpretation: possessing a penetrant kit, for example, does not qualify someone to perform a code-required examination.
Method selection and accept-or-reject decisions must follow the applicable code, specification, and written procedure for the component. A broad method guide cannot set acceptance criteria for an unspecified part. Where inspection has safety, regulatory, or code consequences, involve a qualified NDT specialist and the responsible technical authority.
