First confirm that your exact Galaxy model has a microSD slot and check Samsung’s maximum capacity for your regional variant. Then choose a card at or below that limit: a suitable microSDXC card is the practical choice for high-resolution video, while ordinary photo and file storage rarely calls for the fastest card available. Not all Samsung phones accept microSD cards.

Check your Galaxy model before buying

Samsung does not support external memory on every phone. Some devices have only a SIM slot, and tray designs vary: a compatible handset may use a hybrid tray that takes either a second SIM or a microSD card, rather than both at once.

  1. On the phone, open Settings > About phone and note the exact product or model name. Samsung Japan also identifies Settings > About phone > Product name as a way to find it.
  2. Look up that exact model on Samsung’s support or specification page for your country and, where relevant, carrier variant. Samsung’s UK compatibility list is for the UK and Ireland and warns that regional variants can differ. Samsung also publishes a separate Japan compatibility list.
  3. Confirm that the phone has a microSD slot, whether it shares a tray with a SIM, and the maximum card capacity Samsung lists for that model.
  4. Choose a card no larger than that stated maximum. A card’s capacity label alone does not prove that a particular Galaxy will support it.

For example, Samsung’s UK list gives the Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra a maximum of 1TB, while listing the S21 5G series as having no external memory. Those are UK/Ireland-specific listings, not universal specifications. Samsung Japan’s separate list includes a 1.5TB maximum for a specific model group; that figure should not be applied to other phones.

Understand microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC

The card family corresponds to a capacity range in Samsung’s general guide. That range is not a promise that every phone accepts every card in the family: the phone’s own compatibility listing is the deciding check.

Card family Capacity range in Samsung’s guide What to check
microSD Up to 2GB Confirm the phone’s listed support and whether this capacity suits your needs.
microSDHC Up to 32GB Check the exact handset’s compatibility listing.
microSDXC Over 32GB through 2TB Check the phone’s listed maximum; the family’s upper limit is not the handset’s limit.

Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video on compatible devices. For still photos and basic file storage, Samsung says lower-demand microSD or microSDHC cards can be sufficient. A larger card can hold more, but it does not increase a phone’s stated compatibility limit.

Choose speed for the way you use the card

Samsung’s general guide lists Speed Class numbers 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10, with higher numbers indicating faster classes. For frequent high-resolution video recording, prioritize a reputable card with an appropriate video-speed rating and sustained write capability. For photos and ordinary file storage, Samsung does not say that a top-tier card is essential.

Speed labels and advertised peak rates need context. For example, Samsung Semiconductor’s 2024 PRO Plus data sheet, revision 2.1, lists Class 10, U3, V30 and A2, along with UHS-I SDR104 / DDR200 bus modes. The sheet defines V30 as a sustained video capture rate of 30MB/s. It also describes A2 as an application performance class with specified random I/O and sustained sequential-write measures.

The same data sheet lists sequential read speeds up to 180MB/s and sequential write speeds up to 130MB/s. Samsung says those results were achieved with a Samsung card reader in controlled conditions; reaching the maximum rates requires particular Samsung reader versions, and actual speed can vary with the host device and use conditions. They are card specifications, not a Galaxy-phone benchmark. A2 is likewise a rating, not a guarantee that apps will run faster on every handset.

Know what a microSD card can—and cannot—store

A microSD card is removable storage, not automatically extra internal storage. Samsung states that its Android devices do not support Adoptable storage, the feature that combines a card with internal storage as one volume. Storage behavior can depend on the app, and some apps may allow you to choose the SD card as a default location. Do not assume that apps can generally be installed or moved to the card.

Photos, videos and other files are more straightforward uses when the phone and app support saving to external storage. If you plan to move files to a computer, a card adapter or reader may be useful; check that the reader supports the card and the performance you need. Card-reader results do not indicate the speed the card will reach inside the phone.

Install the card safely

Tray positions differ by handset. Use the manual for your exact model to identify the correct tray and card position rather than relying on a generic diagram. Samsung’s setup guidance says to check whether the tray is hybrid, place the card in its designated position with the gold contacts facing down, and avoid confusing the tray-eject hole with a microphone or speaker opening.

  • Use the supplied ejector tool at the tray outline specified in your phone’s manual.
  • Place the card in the marked microSD position; do not force it into a SIM slot.
  • If your tray is hybrid, decide whether you need the second SIM or the card before inserting it.

A quick buying checklist

  • Compatibility: Exact Galaxy model and regional variant confirmed to have a microSD slot.
  • Capacity: Card is at or below Samsung’s stated maximum for that phone.
  • Workload: For high-resolution video, choose a reputable microSDXC card with an appropriate video-speed rating; for basic photos and files, a high-end rating may not be necessary.
  • Expectations: Treat peak speed as a card-and-test-condition figure, not a guaranteed phone speed, and treat the card as removable storage rather than unified internal storage.
