You can choose a mental health app without making an AI chatbot the centre of care. Start by defining what you want help with, then check what the app actually does, what evidence supports it, how it handles your data, and what safety limits and practical requirements apply. A non-chatbot format—such as guided audio, structured lessons, journaling, or symptom tracking—is not, by itself, proof that an app is effective, private, or clinically safe.

Start with one specific need

Before browsing, name the task you want an app to support. That might be building a routine, following guided mindfulness exercises, learning self-guided coping skills, or recording symptoms to discuss with a clinician. A tool designed for one purpose may not suit another, and no app should be assumed to cover every mental health need.

Then identify the product’s intended purpose and claims. Is it general wellbeing support, education, or tracking—or does it claim to diagnose, treat, or manage a mental health condition? That distinction affects which evidence and regulatory checks are relevant. The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) explains how intended purpose and functionality affect whether digital mental health technologies qualify as medical devices: MHRA guidance on qualification and classification.

Check that it does not depend on a chatbot

Apps can deliver support in different formats. Look for structured modules, audio exercises, journaling, symptom tracking, or peer support if those suit you better than conversational AI. These are format options, not endorsements or evidence that a product works.

Check the app’s description and disclosures for how it uses AI. The American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) app evaluation model includes questions about whether an app uses AI and whether that use is explained: APA App Evaluation Model. If you do not want to rely on an AI chatbot, establish whether the features you need remain usable without one. Do not assume that a product’s non-chatbot features have the same evidence or safeguards as any other part of the product.

Ask whether evidence applies to this app and your goal

Move beyond “Does the app cite research?” Ask whether this particular app—with the features you plan to use—was evaluated for your intended goal among people like you. Look for a clear explanation of what was tested, who took part, and what outcomes or features were assessed. Large promises or a therapy label are not evidence that the app delivers the named intervention.

Evidence for a therapeutic method in general is different from evidence for one app’s implementation of it. The APA model prompts users to consider clinical accuracy, the clinical or recovery foundation, effectiveness evidence, and whether intended users were represented. It is a set of questions for informed judgment, not a universal pass/fail rating; it also notes that few apps will have a gold-standard randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. You do not need to treat the absence of that one study design as an automatic rejection, but you should be able to understand what support the app does have and how closely it matches your use.

The APA’s March 2026 discussion of mental health app red flags is another resource for evaluating claims. A study or citation is useful only to the extent that it supports the specific product, feature, user group, and purpose being presented.

Read the privacy terms before entering sensitive information

A privacy policy is a starting point, not independent proof that a company’s technical practices match its wording. Before entering intimate information, find out what the app collects, why it uses the data, where information is stored, who else receives it, and how long it is retained. Check what security information is provided, whether you can limit collection or opt out of uses, how to delete your data, and what the company says it will do after a breach.

If the policy is missing or too vague to answer basic questions, do not treat the app as suitable for sensitive disclosures. The APA’s evaluation model sets out privacy questions, while its health advisory on generative AI chatbots and wellness apps advises caution with sensitive or personally identifying information and recommends reviewing settings and deletion options.

Do not assume that every health or wellness app is covered by HIPAA. Whether that law applies depends on the organization and context; the APA’s digital mental health resource discusses privacy and HIPAA as specific considerations, not a blanket guarantee for all apps.

Check safety limits and access to human help

Look for plain-language statements about what the app can and cannot do, how it handles safety concerns, and where it directs someone who needs more help. An app that does not explain its limits or provide a route to human support leaves you with less information about what to do when its tools are insufficient.

Digital tools are not replacements for professional healthcare. The MHRA says people experiencing mental health difficulties should seek support from trained professionals. The APA also advises against relying on generative-AI chatbots or wellness apps to provide psychotherapy or psychological treatment. If you need clinical care, involve a qualified professional rather than treating an app as a substitute. For immediate danger, follow local emergency or crisis guidance; the MHRA’s emergency direction is specific to the UK and should not be treated as universal advice.

Verify UK regulatory information in context

Some UK digital mental health technologies qualify as medical devices based on their intended purpose and functionality. For products that are regulated medical devices, the MHRA points users to CE or UKCA marking and its public register. See the regulator’s classification guidance and consumer guidance, published 27 January 2026 and updated 28 January 2026.

A wellbeing classification does not, by itself, show that a product is unsafe; it may mean the product has not undergone the same checks as a regulated medical device. Conversely, a mark or listing does not answer every question about whether an app is suitable for your purpose. These are UK-specific regulatory pointers, not a statement of requirements in every country.

  • Transparency: Can you find who owns or funds the app, when it is updated, and how it uses AI?

If possible, try a short lesson or feature before committing. Ask whether it is understandable, manageable, and aligned with the goal you chose. That is a personal fit check, not a clinical assessment.

Compare shortlisted apps side by side

When choosing between products, use the same questions for each one. The APA cautions against treating its framework as a universal score: there is no fixed number of levels that makes an app “good,” and the right choice depends on the person’s situation. Use the comparison to make trade-offs visible, not to manufacture a winner from a score.

What to compare Questions to ask
Purpose and claims What does it claim to do? Is it wellbeing support or a product with a medical purpose? Check the app’s description and the MHRA classification guidance for UK context.
Evidence What was evaluated, for whom, and for which outcome or feature? Does it apply to this app and your intended use?
Privacy and control What data are collected or shared? Can you limit collection, opt out, and delete information?
Safety and scope Are limitations and safety steps clear? Is there a route to human or professional support when needed?
Personal access Does it fit your age, language, accessibility needs, device, connectivity, and budget?
Transparency and maintenance Are ownership, funding, updates, support, and AI use disclosed?
