For a first desktop Linux installation, start by comparing Linux Mint and Ubuntu LTS; Fedora Workstation is another mainstream choice if you want a newer software base and are comfortable with its update cadence. There is no universally best beginner distro: the right fit depends on your exact computer, essential apps and games, preferred desktop, and how often you want to upgrade. If you can, try the system from a live USB before installing.

What should a beginner look for in a Linux distribution?

“Beginner-friendly” is not one feature or a guarantee that everything will work. Compare the distributions on these five practical questions:

  • Will it work on your hardware? Support can vary between models and even between components in the same product line.
  • How long is the release supported, and how often will you upgrade? Long-term support can reduce how often you need to move to a new release.
  • Does the desktop suit you? Desktop layout and workflow affect daily use more than a distribution’s name.
  • Will your essential software and games run? Check the particular applications you rely on rather than assuming every Windows or macOS program has a Linux version.
  • Can you find useful help? Official documentation and community guidance matter when setup or troubleshooting gets unfamiliar.

For a first choice, prioritize hardware compatibility and the software you need, then weigh desktop preference and update cadence. Published system requirements help rule out obvious mismatches, but they are project guidance, not controlled performance benchmarks.

How do Linux Mint, Ubuntu LTS, and Fedora Workstation compare?

Distribution Could suit Published requirements and support What to check
Linux Mint A beginner looking for an approachable general-purpose desktop and a familiar workflow. Linux Mint lists a minimum of 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk, and recommends 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk for comfortable use. Its LTS releases receive five years of support. The supported releases page lists Mint 22.3 Zena through April 2029. Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce editions are available. Linux Mint FAQ; supported releases (official pages accessed 2026). Try the edition you plan to install on your computer. Mint says proprietary ATI/Nvidia drivers are not installed by default, though they are easy to install. Linux Mint FAQ
Ubuntu Desktop LTS A beginner who values an LTS release, extensive documentation, and a hardware-certification ecosystem. Canonical lists Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS with five years of free security and maintenance updates. Its published requirements are a 2 GHz dual-core processor, 6 GB of memory, and 25 GB of free storage. Ubuntu Desktop download page (official page accessed 2026). Check the exact device against Ubuntu’s certified hardware information and try the live environment. Meeting the published requirements does not guarantee smooth performance for every workload. Ubuntu Desktop download page
Fedora Workstation A beginner who wants a newer desktop platform and is comfortable consulting Fedora’s documentation or community for help. The Fedora Project recommends 4 GB RAM and 40 GB disk for most Fedora variants, and describes live USB testing without permanent changes. It also identifies partner laptops preloaded with Fedora. Fedora Workstation download page (official page accessed 2026). Check the current release’s support lifecycle, your hardware, and whether the software you require is available. The download page does not establish all of those details.

These figures are not an apples-to-apples speed comparison: Mint gives minimum and comfortable-use figures, Ubuntu publishes requirements for its current LTS download, and Fedora gives recommendations for most variants. If a computer has only 2–4 GB of RAM, Mint publishes a lower minimum than Ubuntu’s current page, but that alone cannot predict the experience on your computer.

Which distribution should you install first?

Choose Linux Mint if its desktop and requirements fit your computer

Mint is a sensible starting point if you want a general-purpose desktop and its available editions match your preferred workflow. Its FAQ describes it as “comfortable and easy to use but also powerful and configurable.” The FAQ lists a 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk minimum, with 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk recommended for comfortable use; those are Mint’s published figures, not a performance guarantee. Its LTS releases receive five years of support, and Mint 22.3 Zena is listed through April 2029. Linux Mint FAQ; supported releases (accessed 2026).

Choose Ubuntu LTS if you value its documentation and hardware ecosystem

Ubuntu LTS is a reasonable first installation if its desktop suits you and you want Canonical’s published long-term update commitment and certified-device information. The current download page lists Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, five years of free security and maintenance updates, and requirements of a 2 GHz dual-core processor, 6 GB memory, and 25 GB free storage. Check your exact device and test it before installing rather than treating those figures as a guarantee of compatibility. Ubuntu Desktop download page (accessed 2026).

Choose Fedora Workstation if you prefer a newer platform

Fedora Workstation is worth considering if you want a newer desktop platform and are prepared to follow Fedora’s release information and seek help in its documentation or community. Fedora recommends 4 GB RAM and 40 GB disk for most variants. Before committing, verify the current release’s support lifecycle and whether your hardware and essential software are covered; the cited download page does not settle every one of those questions. Fedora Workstation download page (accessed 2026).

How can you check whether Linux will work on your computer?

A live USB lets you inspect a distribution’s desktop and test key hardware before installing. It is a useful compatibility check, not proof that every feature or driver will work after installation. Ubuntu documents trying Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS without permanent changes, but its preview uses open-source drivers only; hardware that needs a proprietary driver may not work fully until installation or driver setup. 1. Identify your exact computer model. Check the manufacturer’s Linux information, and consult Ubuntu’s certified hardware information if Ubuntu is a candidate.
  2. Get the image from the distribution’s official site. Follow its current instructions to create live media. Ubuntu documents Rufus on Windows and balenaEtcher on macOS. Ubuntu’s Try Ubuntu Desktop guide
  3. Use a spare USB drive and verify the target. Ubuntu recommends an 8 GB-or-larger drive for its tryout; Fedora says 4 GB is sufficient for its live media. Writing an image erases the selected USB drive, so back up its contents and confirm you selected the correct device before proceeding. Ubuntu’s Try Ubuntu Desktop guide; Fedora Workstation download page
  4. Boot the live environment and test essentials. Check Wi-Fi, graphics, sound, display scaling, sleep and wake, and any peripherals you depend on. For Ubuntu, remember that missing proprietary drivers can affect what works in the preview.
  5. Back up your personal data before installation. If you intend to dual boot, read the chosen distribution’s current installation guide and understand which disk and partitions the installer will change.

What if you rely on Steam games?

Check compatibility for your specific games and the distribution release you intend to use before installing. Steam’s Linux support material warns against running unsupported distribution releases because they do not receive security fixes. Support pages can lag behind current releases, so verify Valve’s current guidance rather than assuming a particular distro or release is supported. Steam Linux Support
