First, ask your electricity utility whether your specific account and meter can enroll a third-party Home Area Network (HAN) device. Then check the exact monitor model and firmware against that utility’s current compatibility list. “Smart meter compatible” on a product page is not enough: utilities control enrollment, and eligibility and available features vary.
Start by checking utility and meter eligibility
Before buying, identify your utility, country, meter model or eligibility, and whether new HAN-device enrollment is currently open. A monitor that works with one utility may not connect to another, even if both use smart meters.
For example, PG&E’s Stream My Data service requires an eligible account, rate, meter, and network connection. Its supported devices must conform to ZigBee Smart Energy Profile 1.0 or 1.1, and customers must activate the service. See PG&E’s Stream My Data information and its device list for current requirements.
Check the utility’s process before ordering. Enrollment may require account verification, a meter registration code, and device identifiers such as a MAC address or installation code. SDG&E describes an enrollment process involving account and meter verification and registration through its authorized contractor, but it ended support for new HAN device connections on December 1, 2023. Its older compatibility entries therefore do not establish that a new customer can register a device now. Consult SDG&E’s current HAN information before making a decision.

- REAL-TIME ENERGY DATA: REQUIRES 2.4 GHz WIFI WITH AN INTERNET CONNECTION to monitor energy use with iPhone / Android / Web app. Vue sensors collect energy data and are accurate from ±2%. The Vue is UL and CE Listed for your safety. 1 second data is only available in the app (when actively open) and retained 3 hours. Minute and hour data are retained in the cloud. 1 minute data is retained 7 days, 1 hour data is retained indefinitely. Export cloud data whenever you want in the app.
Choose a connection method
There are two distinct ways to monitor whole-home electricity: receive data from the utility meter over a HAN, or measure current at the electrical panel with CT clamps. Smart plugs can add appliance-level readings, but they do not replace either whole-home method.
Utility-connected HAN monitor
A HAN gateway or display receives readings from a compatible utility meter. Depending on the product, it may show readings on an in-home display, send them to an app or website, or connect through a USB device. This route depends on utility enrollment and provisioning; pairing a HAN device is not the same as pairing an ordinary Zigbee product with a home hub.

PG&E says Stream My Data devices can display readings in 5- to 15-second increments. That cadence applies to this service and is not a promise about other utilities or devices. Features also differ by model and manufacturer, so confirm that the exact functions you want are supported.

One listed example is the Emporia Vue Utility Connect, model EMZGB-1. PG&E’s listing specifies firmware Zigbee-313 and select SmartMeter models. SDG&E also lists the product, but its new-connection cutoff means that an old listing should not be treated as current enrollment availability. A utility listing establishes a limited compatibility result, not universal meter support or an endorsement. PG&E says only the firmware version that passed testing is considered validated; SCE likewise explains that compatibility testing does not certify a device in other respects or promise that every manufacturer-claimed function will work. Check SCE’s HAN compatibility information alongside your own utility’s current instructions.

- SMART ALERTS & CIRCUIT-LEVEL CONTROL: Set usage targets for each individual circuit and receive instant alerts when appliances exceed normal consumption. Refoss app supports automation and peak management to optimize schedules, reduce peaks, and improve efficiency. Real-time electricity usage monitor for circuit-level insights.
CT-clamp panel monitor
A current transformer (CT) clamp measures current on an electrical conductor at the panel. The monitor uses those measurements to calculate energy use. It does not pair with the smart meter, so it can be an alternative when utility HAN enrollment is unavailable or an independent measurement route is preferred.
Confirm the monitor’s sensor count and dimensions, fit in your panel, compatibility with your electrical service, and support for any app or local home-automation system you use. Home Assistant documents Shelly EM as one off-the-shelf option for its energy monitoring integration; see its electricity-grid monitoring documentation.

Supports 2 main circuits (200A) + 16 branch circuits (60A), making it perfect for precise, circuit-level energy monitoring.
- MAXIMIZE YOUR SOLAR SAVINGS (HOME ASSISTANT): This solar energy monitor integrates with Home Assistant to detect solar surplus and automatically power EV chargers, water heaters, and other high‑use appliances. Stop wasting solar energy—use it yourself and cut your electricity bill faster. The perfect home energy monitor for solar homes.
- LOCAL DATA, FULL PRIVACY, NO SUBSCRIPTIONS: Connect seamlessly with Home Assistant for advanced energy automation. All energy data stays local—no cloud, no delays, no privacy concerns. Take full control of your home energy, reduce waste, and protect your privacy. Supports Open API and Web Control.
Panel access and installation are important constraints. Schneider’s guidance for its own monitor specifies an accessible panel, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi rather than 5 GHz, a supported mobile device, and enough room for its clamps; those requirements are model-specific, not universal. Opening an electrical cabinet may require a licensed professional depending on your location. If you are not qualified to work safely in the panel, arrange for a qualified installer.
Smart plugs for individual appliances
A suitable smart plug can measure and sometimes control an individual appliance. Use one to answer appliance-level questions, not as proof that a whole-home monitor will connect to your utility meter. PG&E treats smart plugs as a separate category for monitoring and controlling individual appliances.

Compare the details that affect daily use
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Eligibility and connection | Does your utility currently allow new enrollment for your account and meter? Is the exact model and firmware listed, and what registration steps are required? |
| Data and features | How frequently does the device update? Does it provide usage history, cost or tariff views, solar or net-metering information, or circuit-level detail? Confirm each feature for the specific model and utility rather than relying on a general product description. |
| Installation and placement | For a HAN device, where must it be placed, and is the outlet within useful radio range? SDG&E recommends placing HAN devices within 75 feet of the meter, but also says function varies and it cannot guarantee connection or performance. For a CT monitor, check panel access, clamp fit, service compatibility, and any Wi-Fi requirements. |
| Costs and ongoing support | Check the device price, any service costs, seller availability, firmware status, return policy, and whether app or cloud services are maintained. Utility validation does not establish long-term product availability or support. |
| Privacy | Find out where meter data is sent and how the manufacturer stores and secures it. SDG&E says it cannot protect information transmitted to a customer-enabled device once that device receives meter data. |
Make the choice based on what you need to measure
- Choose a HAN device if your utility confirms current enrollment for your account and meter, and the listed model and firmware provide the data and features you need.
- Choose a CT-clamp monitor if you want panel-based measurement or HAN enrollment is unavailable, provided the sensors fit your panel and installation can be done safely.
- Add smart plugs if you need readings for selected appliances in addition to a whole-home approach.
These options use different data sources, hardware, and setup. For buyers outside the United States, check local utility and meter guidance: the enrollment and protocol details here are based on U.S. utility HAN programs and should not be assumed to apply in other countries.
