Choose a handheld gaming PC by starting with the games and storefronts you need, then compare performance and battery life under the same conditions and check the current price for the exact model and configuration. No one specification—especially battery capacity—can tell you how long a device will last or whether it is the right value for your library.
Start with your games, storefronts, and budget
Make a shortlist of the games you actually want to play and where you own or plan to buy them. Check each important title on the specific device and operating system you are considering. A handheld PC may support a storefront or subscription service broadly without every game working identically; launchers, anti-cheat software, and individual game compatibility can matter.
Also decide how much setup you are willing to do. A Windows handheld offers a PC environment and access to multiple storefronts, but its desktop-oriented interface may involve more configuration than a console-like experience. A SteamOS configuration may suit someone centered on Steam, but confirm the compatibility of games and services outside that library before buying.

Compare performance using the same game and settings
Processor names and advertised power modes are useful clues, not a direct ranking of real-world performance. For a meaningful comparison, look for tests of the same game at the same resolution, graphics preset, upscaling setting, and frame-rate target. The power mode and whether each device is plugged in or running on battery must also match.
Higher graphics settings, resolution, or frame rates can increase power use. A practical comparison asks whether a device can sustain the performance you want in your games without requiring settings you would not actually use. If no matched test exists, treat broad claims that one model is faster as unproven rather than comparing unlike results.

Read battery capacity separately from runtime
Battery capacity, stated in watt-hours (Wh), tells you how much energy a battery can store; it is not a promise of play time. Runtime depends on the game, screen brightness, frame-rate limit, selected power mode, wireless use, and software. Do not convert a capacity figure into hours unless a source reports a comparable runtime test and gives its workload and settings.
ASUS lists an 80Wh battery for the ROG Ally X and selectable 10W Silent, 15W Performance, and 25W Turbo modes; Turbo rises to 30W when connected to AC power. These are manufacturer specifications, not measured battery-life results. See the ASUS ROG Ally X specifications.

For a useful runtime comparison, seek tests using the same game, brightness, frame-rate target, graphics settings, and wireless conditions. Record whether each handheld was in the same power mode and whether the test used a fixed workload. Without those details, runtime figures from different reviews may not be comparable.
If you often play away from an outlet, a compatible USB-C PD power bank may extend a session, but check its output, capacity, and compatibility with the specific handheld. It is an optional workaround, not a substitute for choosing a device and settings that fit your typical use.

Balance the screen and controls against portability
A larger or higher-refresh-rate screen can make games easier to see and motion look smoother, but the display is only one part of the experience. Compare screen size, resolution, refresh rate, device weight, control layout, and grip together. If possible, hold a device before buying: comfort depends on hand size and how long you play, not just the specification sheet.

Make the choice by matching priorities
- Choose around a specific game library: prioritize verified compatibility with your games, storefronts, launchers, and any anti-cheat requirements.
- Choose around time away from an outlet: compare same-condition runtime tests first, then use battery capacity and power controls as supporting context.
- Choose around performance: compare the same game at settings and a frame-rate target you would actually use, with matching power and plugged-in conditions.
- Choose around value: compare current prices in your market for the same storage and memory tier, and account for warranty, included items, and availability.
- Choose around comfort: weigh display characteristics against grip, control layout, and portability, ideally by trying the device in person.
There is no evidence here for a universal winner across price, battery life, and performance: comparable independent tests, current prices, stock, and a complete compatibility matrix are not established. The sound choice is the model that supports your games and preferred setup at a price you can verify, with performance and runtime evidence that matches how you plan to play.
