Choose a graphics card by starting with the resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, then compare recent game benchmarks and local prices for cards that fit your budget. A GPU suited to high-refresh 1080p gaming may not deliver the experience you want at 4K, while a high-end card can be wasted on a modest display.

Start with your display and frame-rate target

Your monitor defines much of the workload. Decide whether you are buying for 1080p, 1440p, or 4K, and note its refresh rate. Then set a realistic frame-rate goal for the games you play and the image quality you want. A high-refresh display calls for a different performance target than a standard-refresh screen; resolution alone does not describe the whole workload.

If you plan to replace your monitor, choose the intended display target before choosing the GPU. AMD’s guidance discusses gaming at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, and TechRadar also recommends starting with monitor resolution: AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT product guidance and TechRadar GPU guidance.

Set a budget around the experience you want

Set a maximum spend, but compare what each candidate can do in your games rather than assuming a higher price always buys a worthwhile improvement. Decide which graphics settings matter to you, whether you use ray tracing, and what frame rate feels acceptable. Prices and availability vary by market, so use current local listings rather than an old launch price or a recommendation written for another region.

For each candidate, look for recent independent reviews with results at your resolution and settings. Multi-game results help reveal whether performance is consistent across the kinds of games you play; a single headline score is not enough to establish a universal winner. No single card can be named the best value for every budget and region without comparable current testing and local prices.

Compare candidates on the details that affect your games

When several cards fit your spending limit, compare them using the same games, resolution, and settings wherever possible.

  • Game performance: Check average frame rates and consistency in the games you play, at the target resolution and settings.
  • VRAM: Consider memory alongside the game, resolution, settings, and features you use. There is no universal VRAM number that guarantees suitability for every game.
  • Ray tracing: If you use it, compare results with ray tracing enabled rather than relying only on conventional rendering benchmarks.
  • Upscaling and frame generation: Check which features are supported by the card and the games you play, and whether you want to use them.
  • Price and physical fit: Compare the actual local price, card dimensions, and cooler design. A card must fit your case and leave suitable airflow.
  • Power: Check board power, connector type, and the complete system’s power-supply requirements.

Treat VRAM as evidence, not a pass-or-fail rule

More memory can matter in particular games and settings, but a VRAM figure on its own cannot tell you how a card will perform. Look for observed memory behavior and performance in tests of the games and resolution you care about. Game demands vary, and features such as ray tracing can change the workload.

For example, AMD published a comparison using Far Cry 6 at 1440p, Ultra settings, with ray tracing set to High. The test, conducted May 16, 2023, compared an RX 6750 XT with 12GB against an RTX 4060 Ti with 8GB, using specified drivers and a Ryzen 9 7950X3D test system. That dated, manufacturer-published, single-game result is not independent evidence of an overall winner or a general memory threshold: AMD’s test disclosure.

Verify card and power-supply compatibility before ordering

Check the exact model number, not just the GPU family. Cards built around the same chip can differ in length, thickness, cooler, power connectors, and power requirements. Compare the manufacturer’s specifications with your case clearance and existing power supply. PSU recommendations depend on the rest of the system, so treat a reference table as guidance rather than a substitute for checking your complete configuration.

  1. Find the exact card’s dimensions and required power connectors in its specifications.
  2. Measure available space in your case and check clearance for the card’s thickness and airflow.
  3. Confirm that your PSU has the required connectors and is suitable for the card and your full system configuration.
  4. If any requirement is unclear, check the card maker’s compatibility guidance before purchasing.

AMD’s PSU guidance explains that recommendations depend on configuration: AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT specifications and guidance.

Use product examples carefully

AMD describes Radeon RX 9060 XT cards as designed for strong Full HD gaming across configurations and price points. That is a manufacturer description, not proof that the RX 9060 XT is the right choice for every buyer. Check independent results in your games, at your target resolution, and compare the card’s current price in your market before deciding: AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT product page.

Editorial roundups may identify cards such as the Intel Arc B580 as budget options, but those picks are time-sensitive and should not be treated as a controlled comparison across all prices and markets: TechRadar GPU picks.
