Start with the games you actually play, then check their current device requirements and frame-rate options before comparing phones. A high refresh-rate screen or a powerful-sounding chipset cannot guarantee that a particular game supports—or can sustain—the frame rate and settings you want.
Start with your games and how you play
Write down your main games, the graphics settings you want, your frame-rate goal, the length of a typical session, and your budget. Those details matter more than whether a phone is marketed as a gaming phone: a puzzle game, a competitive shooter, and a demanding 3D game place different demands on a device.
- Casual and puzzle games: Prioritize reliable support, comfortable handling, a readable screen, and enough storage. You may not benefit from paying extra for a display refresh rate or performance tier the games do not use.
- Competitive online games: Check the game’s selectable frame rates and whether the exact phone model is approved for higher-FPS modes. Touch response, grip, connectivity, and performance over a full session may be important alongside peak speed.
- Demanding 3D games: Compare the publisher’s recommended requirements, available storage, and credible long-session performance evidence. A demanding game can expose heat-related slowdowns that a brief benchmark does not.
Check each game’s current requirements
Use the publisher’s current requirements for every game that matters to you. Check the operating-system version, chipset or processor class, memory, storage, and any device-specific feature list. Distinguish minimum support from recommended specifications and from a separate list of phones eligible for high-FPS play.

The publisher lists 40 GB as supported storage and warns that storage needs may increase with future updates. These are game-specific requirements published by HoYoverse in 2025, not a universal threshold for gaming phones.

Requirements change, so confirm the current page for your game shortly before buying. Riot’s Wild Rift update dated 2025-11-24 sets minimum device requirements starting with Patch 7.0; minimums are not a promise of high graphics quality or high frame rates. Riot’s Wild Rift device specifications are one example of why the exact game and current version matter.
Match the game’s frame rate to the display
A screen’s refresh rate is not the same as a game’s rendered frames per second (FPS). A 120 Hz panel can refresh up to 120 times per second, but the game may have a lower cap, may not support a high-FPS mode on that phone, or may run below its target during play.

Android Developers says games commonly target 30 or 60 FPS. Its guidance explains that a display refresh rate above a game’s target can use more power without benefiting the game. Android’s power-efficiency guidance, last updated 2026-02-26, puts the distinction plainly: “If the display refresh rate is higher than the target frame rate of the game, there is no benefit from the higher refresh rate, only increased power consumption.”

Look for performance that lasts through a session
Peak chipset specifications and short benchmark runs do not tell you how a phone behaves after extended play. Heat can reduce efficiency and trigger CPU or GPU downclocking, which can affect performance and battery use. Android Developers states: “If a device gets too hot, it downclocks the speed of the CPU and GPU to reduce power consumption and allow the device to cool.”
When comparing independent long-session results, look for tests that identify the phone, game, graphics settings, test duration, and temperatures. Results without those details are difficult to apply to your own use. Lenovo’s buyer guide also emphasizes sustained load and the limits of brief benchmark runs: Lenovo’s gaming-phone buying guide.

Compare storage, memory, and battery for your workload
Storage
Compare free storage after the operating system and your other apps are accounted for, not just the capacity printed on the box. Large games and updates need room, and publishers may raise requirements over time; HoYoverse specifically warns that Genshin Impact’s storage needs may increase.
Memory
Use the game’s current requirements as your baseline. Memory can also affect whether games stay ready when you switch between them and other apps, but the available evidence does not establish one RAM capacity that is right for every game or phone.

Battery and power modes
Demanding graphics and high refresh rates draw power. Compare documented real-play battery evidence when it is available, and check whether the phone’s power-saving settings affect the FPS mode you want. In FC Mobile, EA says low battery or power-saving mode can block higher FPS.
Weigh the controls and everyday trade-offs
Display quality, touch response, grip, screen size, speakers, connectivity, and compatible controller support can matter as much as raw performance depending on the player. A phone gaming controller is optional: buy one only after confirming that both the handset and the games you play support it. A dedicated gaming phone is not automatically the best all-purpose choice; consider its camera, software support, and everyday usability alongside gaming features.

Use a short checklist before buying
- List your priority games, desired graphics settings and FPS, typical session length, and budget.
- Open each publisher’s current requirements page and check minimums, recommendations, and any high-FPS device list separately.
- Eliminate phones that miss a requirement for a game you care about, or that lack the specific frame-rate support you want.
- Compare transparent long-session results for the remaining phones, then check usable storage, battery evidence, comfort, and controller compatibility if relevant.
- Recheck current game support and the exact phone configuration available in your region before purchase; requirements and device lists can change.
