A float battery charger can help keep a compatible battery charged during storage by supplying controlled maintenance current after charging. Choose one that explicitly matches the battery’s voltage and chemistry, then check its capacity guidance, charge rate, storage environment, and operating modes. A float maintainer is not the same as an uncontrolled trickle charger, and not every float mode is designed for indefinite connection.
What a float battery charger does
A battery gradually loses charge while stored. A float-maintenance stage is designed to offset that self-discharge after the battery has been charged. The charger adjusts its output to maintain the battery rather than continuously delivering a fixed charging current.
Implementations vary by charger. Battery Tender describes its float voltage as slightly above the resting voltage of a fully charged battery, typically by 1/10 to 1/2 volt; that is the manufacturer’s explanation, not a universal industry specification. CTEK’s XS 0.8 instead uses a defined sequence: its support page says the model maintains the battery at about 13.6V with very low current for up to 10 days in FLOAT, then moves to long-term PULSE maintenance. Those figures and that sequence apply to the XS 0.8, not to float chargers generally.
How a maintainer differs from a trickle charger
An automatic maintainer manages charging and maintenance according to its design. A simple trickle charger may deliver current continuously without an equivalent control strategy. Battery Tender warns that some trickle-charger designs can produce excessive voltage, and advises checking a battery periodically during long-term connection. That is the manufacturer’s warning about some designs, not a claim that every product marketed as a trickle charger behaves identically.

Do not infer that a charger is suitable for unattended storage from the words “float” or “maintainer” alone. Check its manual for the intended maintenance sequence, automatic behavior, and any limits on how long it may stay connected.
Choose a charger that matches the battery
Confirm voltage and chemistry
Read the battery label or manual first. Match the charger to the battery’s nominal voltage and chemistry, and check whether selecting the chemistry requires a manual setting. Support for one chemistry does not establish support for another. For lithium batteries, choose a model with an explicitly compatible lithium program and follow the battery maker’s charging instructions.

| Charger example | Supported voltage and chemistry | Manufacturer-stated capacity | Output and maintenance details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery Tender Plus 6V/12V | 6V or 12V lead-acid chemistries | 14Ah–100Ah | 1.25A; see the product manual for charging and maintenance behavior. |
| Battery Tender Weather Resistant 12V 800mA | 12V chemistries listed by the manufacturer for this model | 3Ah–50Ah | 800mA; weather-resistant construction is stated for this model. |
| CTEK PRO25S | Separate lead-acid and 12V lithium programs | not stated in the cited manual | SUPPLY mode is 13.6V/22A; this is a supply setting, not an ordinary automatic maintenance cycle. |
Battery Tender’s product specifications are from its current product pages accessed October 7, 2026. CTEK’s mode details come from the PRO25S North America manual; a publication date for that manual was not established.
Consider storage conditions and operating modes
If the charger will be used where it may be exposed to the elements, verify the exact model’s environmental protection and installation instructions. “Weather resistant” is a product-specific claim, not proof that a charger can be left outdoors in any conditions.

- Easy Operation -Just plug-in, connect to the battery and start charging or maintaining your battery. The desulfation is working automatically during the charing. No manual operation.
Read mode descriptions closely. On the CTEK PRO25S, SUPPLY mode provides 13.6V/22A without time or voltage limitation and disables spark protection. Those are important limitations of that particular setting. Do not confuse it with the charger’s automatic charging and maintenance programs.

CTEK XS 0.8: FLOAT followed by PULSE
CTEK’s support guidance for the XS 0.8 describes a FLOAT stage at about 13.6V and very low current for up to 10 days, followed by long-term PULSE maintenance. If an XS 0.8 appears not to reach its final step, consult the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance for that model; a timed FLOAT stage is part of its stated sequence.

Battery Tender models: check the exact manual
Battery Tender describes float maintenance as holding voltage slightly above the resting full-charge level. Its FAQ also recommends periodic battery checks during long-term connection. Consult the manual for the specific charger and battery rather than assuming that all models use the same voltage, timing, or restart behavior.
Quick Recap
Connect and maintain it safely
- Verify compatibility: Match the battery’s voltage and chemistry to the charger’s supported settings, then confirm capacity guidance in both manuals.
- Inspect before connecting: Follow the charger and battery makers’ instructions for condition, polarity, ventilation, and connection location. Do not charge a damaged battery or use an unsuitable environment.
- Select the correct program: Choose the battery type and voltage specified by the charger manual. Do not use a supply mode as a substitute for an automatic maintenance program.
- Check indicators and behavior: Use the manual to interpret charging-stage lights or messages. A maintenance charger may use timed or pulsed stages rather than showing a continuous float state.
- Monitor storage: Follow the manufacturer’s inspection and connection guidance, particularly for long storage periods. Disconnect or investigate if the charger, battery, wiring, or surrounding area shows abnormal heat, damage, or other warning signs.
Questions to settle before buying
- What voltage and chemistry are printed on the battery?
- Does the exact charger model support both, and is a selector or separate program required?
- Is the battery’s capacity within the maker’s stated range?
- Is the output current appropriate for the intended use, and does the manual explain recovery and maintenance behavior?
- Does the charger use float, pulse, or a sequence of stages, and what does its manual say about extended connection?
- Will the charger be used in an exposed location, and does the exact model’s environmental rating suit it?
