Choose a first phone by matching it to the child’s actual communication needs, the family’s ability to set and maintain boundaries, and the total cost—not by age or brand alone. There is no universally established right age. Before buying, agree on expectations, compare the parental controls available in your family’s phone ecosystem, and check the exact model’s durability and repair terms.
Start with the need, not the phone
Decide what the phone needs to do: for example, let your child contact family, coordinate pickups, or communicate while away from home. The answer helps define which features and service are necessary—and whether a premium new handset is justified.
No evidence establishes one universally correct age for a first phone. Readiness depends on the child’s needs and the family’s ability to agree on, explain, and revisit boundaries. Make the purchase a shared decision rather than treating a phone as a device-only choice.
Agree on rules before setup
Talk through the expectations before handing over the phone. The Federal Trade Commission recommends considering parental controls, while Apple advises starting with a conversation about screen time before changing settings. The FTC’s guidance on kids and cell phones and Apple’s family guidance both frame controls as part of a broader family conversation.

- When and where the phone may be used, including any screen-free times or places.
- Which apps and contacts are allowed, and how new ones will be approved.
- What the child should do if a message, app, or interaction makes them uncomfortable.
- How you will revisit the rules as the child’s needs and maturity change.
Compare parental controls in your family’s phone ecosystem
Apple and Google document built-in options. The right route depends on the parent’s existing devices, the child’s account, and which limits the family intends to use—not on an assumption that either platform is universally safer. Menus and features can vary by software version, account, and region, so check the current settings on the devices you plan to use.

The FTC also advises considering controls on the phone itself and through third-party apps. That does not mean every family needs a paid monitoring service; choose controls for specific boundaries you have discussed, and make sure you understand how they work.

Check durability and repair terms for the exact model
Do not assume a phone is durable because it is expensive, from a particular brand, or described broadly as rugged or waterproof. Check the exact model’s water and dust rating, the manufacturer’s explanations of that rating, available repairs, warranty exclusions, and the cost of relevant accessories.

- Confirm the exact model number before relying on a protection rating or repair quote.
- Look for a case made for that handset. A case is a sensible accessory to consider, but do not assume it prevents damage or call it drop-proof without evidence for that specific product.
- A screen protector is another optional accessory; its effectiveness depends on the product, and no particular protector is established here.
- Check local repair availability and what the warranty does and does not cover.
Work out the total cost, not just the handset price
Compare the expected cost of owning the phone, including the upfront purchase, activation and recurring service, accessories, and a plausible repair or coverage expense. Ask local carriers about coverage where the child will go, monthly charges, data limits, fees, and any useful account-level restrictions. Costs and plan terms depend on location and change over time; there is no established cheapest phone or plan for every family.
Optional accidental-damage coverage is another part of the calculation. AppleCare+ illustrates why the plan premium and service fees should be checked separately: Apple’s North American terms accessed October 3, 2026, list U.S. iPhone service fees of US$29 for screen-only damage and US$99 for other accidental damage, subject to plan terms. Consider an older or refurbished handset
If the child does not need a premium new model, compare older and refurbished options against the same requirements for compatibility, software support, battery condition, warranty, and repairability. For any seller, check the exact model, return policy, battery condition, warranty, and remaining software-support horizon before buying.
Apple says its Certified Refurbished program tests devices; refurbished iOS devices have a new battery and outer shell and include a one-year limited warranty. Apple also advertises savings of “up to 15%,” a maximum claim that does not guarantee a particular discount, current stock, or a better price than every other seller.
