There is no single best digital amplifier for every listener. In consumer audio, “digital amplifier” often means a Class D amplifier, but Class D describes the output-stage topology—not whether the unit accepts a digital audio signal. Choose by matching the amplifier’s power and connections to your speakers and sources, then compare performance figures under equivalent test conditions.

What “digital amplifier” means

Class D amplifiers use a switching output stage. They can accept an analog signal, a digital signal, or both, depending on the design. A model with a digital input may accept formats such as PCM or I²S; that input capability is separate from its Class D topology. Analog Devices explains the distinction and the design considerations in its overview of Class D audio amplifiers and its article on digital-input Class D amplifiers.

Class D can reduce heat dissipation and cooling requirements, which is useful in compact or high-output installations. That efficiency does not guarantee a particular sound quality. The output filter, feedback design, speaker impedance, clocking in digital-input designs, and distortion and noise performance all depend on implementation. Speaker impedance also varies with frequency, so a nominal impedance number alone does not describe the load across the audible range.

How to compare amplifiers

Start with the system you are building: stereo music, multichannel home theater, or another application. Then compare the specifications and connections that affect that use. Manufacturer ratings are useful only when their conditions are clear; do not treat figures measured at different loads or output levels as directly comparable.

What to check Why it matters
Channel count and system role Match the number of amplifier channels to the speakers you need to drive. Check whether the unit is an integrated amplifier with source control, or a power amplifier that needs a separate preamp or processor.
Output power and load Read the rated power per channel alongside the speaker load, number of channels driven, and other stated test conditions. Verify the amplifier’s supported speaker impedance in its documentation.
Distortion, noise, and response Compare THD+N, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and frequency response, noting the output level and bandwidth used for each figure. One specification does not predict performance at every listening level or in every system.
Inputs and outputs Confirm that the amplifier has the connections your sources and system require: analog or digital inputs, DAC, HDMI eARC, phono, Bluetooth, streaming, pre-outs, or a subwoofer output. Check the exact model’s current manual rather than inferring features from the product family.
Efficiency, cooling, and protection Efficiency and thermal behavior matter in enclosed or high-output installations. Look for documented overcurrent, overtemperature, short-circuit, and voltage protection where those features are important to your setup.

What the published performance figures establish

Texas Instruments’ May 2026 application note for its TAS58xx Class D amplifier family describes a 20 Hz–20 kHz frequency response and states figures typically below 0.03% THD+N at 1 W, SNR generally exceeding 100 dB, and efficiency up to 90%. These are manufacturer-stated, family-level figures—not independent comparative measurements of retail amplifiers or a guarantee that every implementation achieves the same results. See TI’s TAS58xx performance application note for context.

For digital-input designs, clock behavior is another implementation detail. Analog Devices author Matt Felder writes, “For good audio quality, most digital input amplifiers require fairly low levels of jitter on BCLK or MCLK.” This concerns the design of digital-input amplifiers; it is not a consumer-product ranking or evidence that every listener will hear a difference.

Multichannel home theater: Marantz AMP 10

Marantz lists the AMP 10 as a 16-channel amplifier using custom Class D amplification, with 200 watts per channel. It is a concrete example for a multichannel home-theater system, not a universal choice for stereo listeners. Consult the Marantz AMP 10 product page and official documentation for the rating conditions, compatibility, and system requirements before comparing it with another amplifier.

Stereo systems: features beyond topology

What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 stereo amplifier roundup shows why connectivity and system role matter alongside power. Its entry for the NAD C 3050 with MDC2 BluOS-D lists 100 watts per channel, MM phono, HDMI eARC, USB-A, optical and coaxial inputs, Bluetooth aptX HD, and streaming connections. Those are the roundup’s listed specifications and editorial context; the example does not establish that this NAD model is Class D. The guide’s rankings and review judgments are What Hi-Fi?’s, and may change. See its 2026 stereo amplifier roundup.

Choose for the system, not the label

  • For a stereo setup, prioritize the required source connections, speaker compatibility, and power rating under clearly stated conditions.
  • For multichannel theater, confirm channel count, the number of channels driven under the quoted rating, and compatibility with your processor and speakers.
  • If you need a compact, efficient installation, consider thermal behavior and documented protection as well as sound-related specifications.
  • If digital inputs matter, verify the supported input formats and exact connection options; do not assume every Class D amplifier has a DAC or digital input.

None of the cited specifications substitutes for checking the exact amplifier and speaker documentation together. The available examples cover stereo and multichannel home audio; they do not establish a best model across budgets, rooms, speaker loads, or other categories such as car audio.
