Choose the viewport that exercises the behavior you need to inspect. For responsive debugging, start with your site’s actual CSS media-query breakpoints and capture widths just below, at, and just above each important transition. For a design review or presentation, pick dimensions that keep the relevant content visible, then record the width, height, screenshot scale, and capture mode so the result is reproducible. A named phone or laptop preset is only a convenient example, not a universal standard.
Start with the question your screenshot must answer
Viewport selection is not a search for one perfect “desktop” or “mobile” size. The right dimensions depend on whether you are debugging a layout rule, reviewing a first screen, creating a visual-regression baseline, or producing a presentation image.
Responsive-layout debugging
Use the widths where your CSS changes. Inspect the page’s @media rules, then capture immediately below a breakpoint, exactly at it, and immediately above it. This reveals whether navigation, grids, typography, or overflow changes at the intended threshold. Chrome DevTools Device Mode can display breakpoint bars and let you move the responsive viewport across them; its Device Mode guide also lets you enter exact dimensions.
Design review or handoff
Choose a width and height that make the component under discussion visible. A hero section may need a tall viewport, while a navigation review may need only the first screen. Write the dimensions in the review record rather than saying “mobile” or “laptop”; those labels hide meaningful differences.

Visual-regression testing
Fix every variable that affects pixels: viewport width and height, browser version, fonts, color scheme, screenshot scale, and whether the capture is viewport-only or full-page. A baseline made at one set of values is not directly comparable with a capture made at another.
Presentation or documentation image
Use the aspect ratio that fits the destination and choose a width that keeps text legible. If the whole page matters, use full-page capture; if the point is what a visitor sees on first load, use the current viewport.
Use real breakpoints before named device presets
Chrome’s current Device Mode examples include Mobile S (320px), Mobile M (375px), Mobile L (425px), Tablet (768px), Laptop (1024px), Laptop L (1440px), and 4K (2560px). These are tool presets, not measured visitor statistics and not mandatory industry breakpoints. They are useful sample widths when a project has no more specific requirement.
| Choice | What it tests | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Just below a CSS breakpoint | The layout before a rule activates | Capture one or two CSS pixels below the threshold. |
| At the breakpoint | The exact transition condition | Capture the declared min-width or max-width value. |
| Just above a CSS breakpoint | The layout after the rule activates | Capture one or two CSS pixels above the threshold. |
| Chrome named preset | A familiar example width | Use when communicating a general size, not as proof of a user’s device. |
For example, if a grid changes at 768px, test 767px, 768px, and 769px. If a second rule changes the layout at 1024px, repeat the same three-point check there. The exact neighboring values can be wider when the design has rounding, container queries, or a fluid interval that deserves sampling.
Understand CSS pixels, device pixels, and DPR
A viewport width is expressed in CSS pixels, the logical coordinate system used for layout. Device pixel ratio (DPR) describes the relationship between those logical pixels and physical screen pixels. Chrome explains it this way: “DPR tells Chrome how many screen pixels to use to draw a CSS pixel.” A 375 CSS-pixel viewport can therefore be rendered on a high-density emulation with more physical pixels.

CSS-scale output
In Playwright, scale: "css" produces one screenshot pixel per CSS pixel. This is usually the easiest mode for stable regression files, because a 375px-wide viewport produces a consistent 375-pixel-wide image regardless of density settings.
Device-scale output
scale: "device" uses device pixels. A high-DPI context can produce an image wider and taller than its CSS viewport. Choose it when the output must represent device-pixel detail or feed a high-resolution asset pipeline, and expect file dimensions and size to change with the emulated density.
| Requirement | Recommended scale | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel-stable visual regression | CSS | One output pixel maps to one CSS pixel. |
| High-resolution presentation asset | Device | Retains device-pixel output where high density is wanted. |
| Comparing captures from different DPR settings | Usually CSS | Removes density-driven image-size differences. |
Choose viewport-only or full-page capture
Viewport screenshot
A viewport screenshot records the currently visible area. Use it to answer “What does the first screen look like at this width and height?” It is appropriate for above-the-fold reviews, navigation checks, and comparing the visible state at a fixed window size.

Full-page screenshot
A full-page capture includes the page’s scrollable content. Use it for long-form layout review, documentation, archived pages, and regressions that may occur below the fold. Full-page stitching can expose sticky headers, lazy-loaded images, or sections whose height changes as they render, so wait for the page to settle before capturing.
Playwright exposes this distinction through the fullPage screenshot option. Chrome DevTools can capture the current viewport from Device Mode. Do not compare a viewport image with a full-page image as though they were the same artifact.
When dimensions are not enough: emulate the device characteristics
Resizing a responsive viewport changes layout width and height, but it does not automatically reproduce every device behavior. Chrome custom-device settings and Playwright emulation can additionally configure device scale factor, user agent, mobile behavior, touch, color scheme, locale, timezone, and geolocation.

- Use viewport resizing alone when your question is primarily CSS layout at a given width.
- Add device scale factor when density-dependent rendering or image selection matters.
- Add mobile behavior and touch when hover, scrolling, or input affordances differ on mobile.
- Set a user agent only when server-side or client-side UA branches are part of the behavior under test.
Emulation is a controlled approximation, not evidence that every physical handset, browser build, or operating-system compositor will render identically. For physical-device confidence, test on the actual device or a service that supplies real-device coverage.
A practical viewport-selection workflow
- Define the review question. Write whether you need breakpoint behavior, first-screen appearance, an entire page, or a high-resolution asset.
- Inspect the implementation. Find the page’s media queries, container rules, fluid clamps, and any JavaScript branches tied to viewport or user-agent values.
- Build a width set. For each important transition, include a width below, at, and above the breakpoint. Add a named Chrome preset only when it communicates a familiar example.
- Set an explicit height. Keep height fixed for comparisons. A 375px width with a 667px height answers a different question from the same width with a 900px height.
- Select output scale. Use CSS scale for stable dimensions or device scale for density-aware output.
- Choose capture extent. Set viewport-only or full-page according to the artifact’s purpose.
- Configure emulation if required. Add DPR, mobile, touch, UA, locale, timezone, or geolocation only when those variables are relevant.
- Record the settings. Store width, height, scale, full-page state, browser, and emulation fields alongside the image.
- Repeat after content settles. Wait for fonts, images, animations, and lazy content before taking the final shot.
DIY capture with Playwright
Playwright’s browser context has a default viewport of 1280 × 720, but that is a tool default, not a recommended website size. Set the viewport explicitly so a host window cannot change your result. The examples below use a 375 × 667 CSS-pixel viewport and CSS-scale output.
JavaScript
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 375, height: 667 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'example-375.png', scale: 'css' });
await browser.close();
For a whole page, add fullPage: true. For device-pixel output, change scale to "device" and choose the device scale factor deliberately.
Python
from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright
with sync_playwright() as p:
browser = p.chromium.launch()
page = browser.new_page(
viewport={"width": 375, "height": 667},
device_scale_factor=1
)
page.goto("https://example.com", wait_until="networkidle")
page.screenshot(path="example-375.png", full_page=False, scale="css")
browser.close()
Test three sides of a breakpoint
const widths = [767, 768, 769];
for (const width of widths) {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width, height: 800 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({ path: `breakpoint-${width}.png`, scale: 'css' });
await page.close();
}
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. You can still choose the viewport width and height, scale, full-page behavior, device presets, and the other capture options through its API; the documentation lists the parameter names. It is useful when you want a repeatable service call instead of maintaining a browser runtime.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Common failures and fixes
The image is the wrong width
Cause: the tool used device scale or an implicit DPR. Fix: set the CSS viewport explicitly and use CSS screenshot scale when you need one output pixel per CSS pixel.

A breakpoint appears one pixel early or late
Cause: a fractional layout width, scrollbar, zoom level, or a max-width rule is affecting the effective viewport. Fix: test neighboring integer widths, keep browser zoom at 100%, and inspect the media-query declaration in DevTools.
The page is captured before images or fonts arrive
Cause: navigation completed before late resources or lazy content settled. Fix: wait for a selector, network idle, a measured delay, and image/font readiness as appropriate; then capture.
A full-page image has shifted sections
Cause: lazy loading, animations, sticky elements, or content injected during stitching. Fix: disable animations where possible, scroll or wait for lazy content, and capture after layout is stable.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Reduce unnecessary combinations. Test breakpoint neighborhoods for debugging instead of every named preset.
- Keep captures deterministic. Pin dimensions, scale, browser, fonts, and emulation settings.
- Use viewport-only shots for fast checks. Full-page stitching and lazy-image loading require more work.
- Cache deliberately. A cached image is useful for documentation but can hide a changed page; invalidate it when the test requires fresh content.
- Separate layout and device tests. A width matrix finds CSS transitions; device emulation finds behavior dependent on DPR, UA, or touch.
There is no official evidence for one universally optimal viewport or a single standard breakpoint set. Chrome’s preset widths are examples, and Playwright’s 1280 × 720 default is merely a default. Base the matrix on your site’s code and the reader-visible outcome you need to verify.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 375px viewport the same as a 375px-wide image?
Only when the screenshot uses CSS scale. Device scale can produce more output pixels for the same 375 CSS-pixel layout.

No. Use the site’s actual breakpoint transitions for debugging; use presets as convenient, familiar examples when they fit your review goal.
Does a responsive viewport prove a site works on a physical phone?
No. Physical-device behavior can also depend on DPR, user agent, touch, mobile behavior, browser and operating-system rendering.
When should I use a full-page screenshot?
Use it when content below the fold or the complete scrollable layout matters; use viewport-only capture for the current visible screen.
