Choose a DCP creation service by starting with the written delivery specifications from your distributor, festival, and every intended theater—not with a provider’s generic promise of an “industry-standard” package. Send those requirements to prospective services and get written confirmation that they can meet the format, QC, delivery, and deadline requirements. Then compare the complete scope and quote, including revisions and logistics.
1. Get the recipient’s requirements before requesting quotes
A DCP can be technically valid and still fail to meet a particular venue’s delivery rules. Request the current written specification from each festival, distributor, or theater that will receive the film. The DCI specification describes the broader digital-cinema system and package validation, but the recipient’s instructions determine what your delivery must contain (DCI Digital Cinema System Specification).
Record the requirements that apply to your screening or distribution handoff:
- DCP application profile: SMPTE, Interop, or a specifically named variant.
- Resolution, frame rate, color expectations, and audio configuration.
- Required language, subtitle, caption, or alternate-version packages.
- Whether encryption is required; if so, which servers need KDMs and the permitted playback window.
- File naming, delivery method, filesystem, physical-media interface, and delivery deadline.
Send the actual specification to the service and ask it to confirm each item in writing. If two recipients provide conflicting requirements, ask whether separate package versions are needed rather than assuming one DCP will suit both.

2. Confirm the exact package and versions
Ask which DCP profile the recipient accepts and whether the service will create the required package—not merely whether it “makes DCPs.” Confirm whether you need separate compositions for language versions, subtitles or captions, or other delivery variants.
Requirements are recipient-specific. For example, the 83rd Venice International Film Festival’s 2026 guidance prefers SMPTE DCP Application Profile Bv2.1 and permits fully DCI-compliant Interop DCPs. That is a useful current example, not a rule for other festivals or theaters. Its document also asks for QC and validation by the mastering facility together with the submitting producer and/or distributor.
Ask the service to state the profile and versions in its quote or order confirmation. If the recipient uses a profile name or condition you do not understand, have the recipient and service resolve it before mastering begins.

3. Explain your source materials and ask what happens if they do not match
Give each provider the details of your locked master and ask whether the material is ready for its workflow. Relevant intake details include the source format, frame rate, color space, image aspect ratio, audio channel layout and sample rate, and the status of subtitles or captions. The The DCP Company specifications describe these as part of its preparation and delivery guidance.
Ask how the service will handle any mismatch between the source and recipient requirements. Clarify whether conversion, audio preparation, subtitle work, or a new source export is needed, and whether it changes the price or schedule. Agree on who supplies corrected picture, audio, and subtitle assets if the materials are not ready to master.
4. Compare QC by its actual scope and evidence
“QC included” is not precise enough to compare services. Ask what the checks cover and what you will receive as evidence. Depending on the service, the scope may include:

- Package and asset-integrity validation.
- Playback checks and picture or sound review.
- Subtitle timing and placement review.
- A proof, report, or screening for approval.
- Compatibility checks or a test at the intended theater.
Ask who performs each check, whether the producer or distributor must approve the result, and what happens if a problem is found. Venice’s 2026 guide asks for QC and validation by the professional mastering facility together with the submitting producer and/or distributor (festival guidance).

A computer proof can help catch errors, but it is not the same as seeing the DCP projected in a theater. The DCP Company notes this limitation for its proof link (service specifications). If theatrical verification matters, ask whether a screening can be arranged and whether it is included in the quote.
5. Resolve encryption and KDMs early
First confirm whether the recipient requires an encrypted DCP. If it does, identify the theater servers that need keys, who will generate and send the KDMs, and the playback dates and times the keys must cover. A KDM is tied to playback equipment and a validity window, so an incorrect server identity or schedule can prevent playback.

Do not treat encryption as a harmless default. Venice’s 2026 guidance recommends unencrypted delivery, but sets a validity period for encrypted DCPs when they are used (festival guidance). Follow the intended recipient’s current instructions.

Request a project-specific written quote that itemizes the work and any optional charges. Include mastering, QC, additional versions, subtitle or caption work, KDMs, physical drive preparation, shipping, rush work, revisions, and redelivery. Confirm when the turnaround clock starts—such as after upload or acceptance of source assets—and get the delivery deadline confirmed in writing.
Advertised rates are provider claims, not a dependable market average, and they are not comparable unless the included work matches. The providers’ live pages accessed in 2026 advertised these starting prices:

Ask how the contract distinguishes a provider-caused technical correction from a change to the film or a problem in supplied source assets. The DCP Company’s terms describe one round of minor technical revisions and separate those from picture or audio changes; they also assign source-material responsibilities to the client and call for prompt proof review (terms and conditions). Confirm the terms that apply to your own order, including fees and schedule for additional versions or redelivery.
7. Match delivery logistics to the destination
Confirm whether the recipient accepts secure digital transfer, direct theater delivery, physical media, or more than one option. For a physical drive, verify the required interface, filesystem, media, and copy count before ordering or shipping anything.
The 2026 Venice guidance describes digital and physical delivery options and gives media and filesystem instructions (festival guidance). Film Independent’s theater specification is a venue-specific example that lists DCP-only delivery, HD/2K, XYZ color, 5.1 or stereo audio, 24 fps, filesystem, and drive-interface requirements (Film Independent theater DCP specifications). That PDF is dated 2022, so confirm the venue’s current requirements before relying on it for a new screening.

Ask whether the service prepares and ships the drive or whether you are expected to supply media. A consumer drive is not automatically suitable: the intended theater’s interface and filesystem requirements, plus the provider’s preparation process, determine what will work.
8. Use a like-for-like comparison when choosing
Once each candidate has your recipient’s specification, compare the written responses across the same decision points:
- Technical match: required profile, resolution, frame rate, color and audio workflow, subtitles or captions, encryption, and additional versions.
- QC accountability: checks performed, responsible parties, proof or report, approval steps, and any theater test.
- Scope and price: exact inclusions, add-ons, rush fees, physical media and shipping, revisions, and redelivery.
- Turnaround and logistics: when work begins, confirmed deadline, secure transfer, theater delivery, and physical options.
- Communication and responsibility: named contact, written confirmation of recipient requirements, source-material expectations, file handling, and responsibility if a venue rejects the package.
Public service pages can describe available work, but marketing claims alone do not establish reliability, compatibility with your venue, or a market-wide price. Make the decision from the service’s written scope and terms, the actual QC process, and the recipient’s requirements. The DCP Company, DCP Cloud, and DCP Maker each describe relevant services, but their current offerings and project quotes should be confirmed directly (The DCP Company; DCP Cloud; DCP Maker).
