There is no single Command Prompt command that safely force-removes every Windows program. First identify how the app was installed: use WinGet when it can identify the app, or use msiexec.exe only when you have confirmed the app is an MSI product. If neither applies, use the app’s own uninstaller or Windows’ normal uninstall settings rather than guessing at a command.
Before forcing an uninstall, try repair or the normal removal route
If an app is malfunctioning but still opens, try its repair option before removing it. On Windows 11, check Settings > Apps > Installed apps; Windows 10 has the corresponding Apps settings. Repair options are not available for every app. Some programs also offer repair or change options in Control Panel. See Microsoft’s Windows repair guidance.
For routine removal, Microsoft lists the Start menu, Settings, and Control Panel as uninstall routes. Some apps do not show an uninstall button in Settings, and Microsoft notes that “some apps and programs are built into Windows and can’t be uninstalled.” Consult Microsoft’s Windows app-removal guidance for the applicable path. It covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.

Use WinGet if it can identify the application, or use Windows Installer’s msiexec.exe command if you have confirmed the product is an MSI package. These methods target different kinds of installations; neither is a universal command for every app.

Use WinGet when it identifies the application
Open Command Prompt and first inspect WinGet’s app listing so you can distinguish the intended program from similarly named results. The command reference and selectors are documented in Microsoft Learn’s winget uninstall documentation.

Search the list and note the exact app name or package ID shown for the installed program.

winget uninstall --name "Example App" -
If WinGet shows a confirmed package ID, use that more precise target instead:
winget uninstall --id Publisher.PackagePublisher.Packageis an example, not a real package ID. Replace it only with the ID WinGet lists for the intended app. -
Review the result and any prompts. If the query matches multiple apps, refine it rather than choosing a result based only on a similar name. WinGet does not support wildcards.

WinGet supports selectors including --id, --name, --version, --scope, --source, --exact, and --product-code. Use a selector to make the target clearer; do not assume that a broad name query refers to the app you intend to remove. If a Microsoft Store agreement prompt appears while querying package sources, Microsoft says adding --source winget can avoid that prompt.

That does not guarantee every third-party uninstaller will succeed. Its --silent option suppresses UI, so it is not a good first choice when you need to see prompts or confirm what will happen. The documented --force option is not a universal bypass for uninstall protections and does not repair a broken vendor uninstaller.
Use msiexec.exe only for a confirmed MSI product
Windows Installer supports removing an MSI product by its product code. In Command Prompt, use this form after replacing the placeholder with the confirmed product-code GUID for the app:

msiexec.exe /uninstall {PRODUCT-CODE}{PRODUCT-CODE} is a placeholder, not a value to run literally. Do not copy a sample GUID from another computer: use the code belonging to the intended product on your system. Microsoft documents this syntax in its msiexec command reference.
Identify an MSI product without deleting registry data
Windows Installer uninstall metadata may help confirm the product. Microsoft documents the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstall; MSI entries use a product-code GUID subkey and can include values such as DisplayName, DisplayVersion, and Publisher. Treat this information as identification metadata, not as an uninstall command. Deleting the registry key is not Microsoft’s documented procedure for removing the product.

Microsoft also documents msiexec.exe /uninstall {PATCH-GUID} /package {PRODUCT-CODE}. That command removes a patch applied to a product; it is different from uninstalling the product itself. Do not use the patch form as a substitute for the product-uninstall command.

What if the program will not uninstall?
Proceed from the app’s normal uninstall entry to Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance rather than trying an unverified command or deleting installer data.

Restart Windows, then try the app’s ordinary uninstall entry again.

If available, use the app’s repair or reset option. Microsoft’s repair guidance explains where to look in Windows settings.

Use Settings or Control Panel to uninstall the app if its own removal route is not working, then follow Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for programs that cannot be installed or removed.

If the problem continues, contact the app publisher for its official removal instructions. Uninstall switches, quoting rules, and behavior differ by vendor, so do not assume a command for one non-MSI app will work for another.
If you suspect the program is malware or otherwise suspicious, scan with Windows Security and clean detected threats before trying to remove it. Microsoft also lists Reset this PC while keeping files as a possible escalation; this is a significant Windows recovery action, not a routine fix for every failed uninstall. Read Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance and understand the implications before considering it.
