Choose a cloud service only after confirming it can receive your aquarium camera feed, run your encoder continuously, and sustain the upload bitrate YouTube recommends for your chosen resolution. YouTube defines the ingest protocols and encoder settings; the cloud provider determines whether the machine, network transfer, monitoring, restart controls, support, and service terms can keep your setup running. The official YouTube guidance does not establish a best cloud vendor, so compare providers against the checklist below and verify their current terms directly.
Start by deciding how the aquarium feed reaches the cloud
A cloud encoder can send a live stream to YouTube, but first the camera feed must reach that encoder. Decide whether your camera can provide a network stream the cloud machine can access, or whether your setup needs another capture path. The official YouTube materials explain YouTube ingest, not aquarium camera integration, so check the camera and encoder documentation as well as the cloud service’s supported input workflow.
Ask each candidate service whether it can run your specific encoder and receive your chosen camera input continuously. Do not assume that renting a virtual machine alone includes camera connectivity, a configured encoder, process supervision, or managed recovery.

YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates include 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. For higher frame rates, its table lists 8 Mbps for 720p60 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are recommended encoded-stream settings, not a guarantee that a connection operating at exactly the same rate will be reliable. Choose resolution and frame rate based on the image quality you need and the sustained upload capacity available from the cloud machine’s location. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends testing upload speed and monitoring stream health.

| Target stream | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Selection note |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | Lower bandwidth demand than 1080p30; assess whether the detail is sufficient for your aquarium. |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | A common quality-versus-bandwidth choice for a static scene. |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | Use 60 fps only if the extra motion smoothness is useful for your feed. |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | Requires substantially more sustained upload capacity than 1080p30. |
Allow practical headroom above the encoder bitrate for a stable connection, and test from the actual cloud region and machine configuration you plan to use. The video bitrate is only one factor: a real deployment also depends on the provider’s network path and transfer terms.
Choose an ingest protocol and configure it correctly
YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH for third-party ingest. Their trade-offs are different: RTMP is unencrypted and supports H.264; RTMPS encrypts the connection and is suitable for ordinary low-latency use; HLS and DASH are encrypted and support additional codecs for high-resolution workflows, but their segmented delivery typically adds more latency. For a typical aquarium livestream, consider RTMPS unless your encoder or workflow gives you a reason to use another supported protocol. See YouTube’s ingest protocol comparison.

YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its setup guide requires a valid RTMPS ingestion endpoint and application path, a connection to port 443, and the correct host name supplied as SNI during TLS setup. A connection can fail even when the stream key is correct if the endpoint, path, port, or TLS/SNI configuration is wrong. Consult the RTMPS connection guide and your encoder’s instructions.
Check the encoder settings before committing to a server
- Codec: YouTube’s encoder guidance allows H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, but verify that the cloud machine and your encoder support the codec and can encode at the selected resolution and frame rate.
- Bitrate mode: YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding. Set the encoder’s bitrate to match the resolution and frame-rate target rather than treating a higher setting as automatically better.
- Keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Protocol: Confirm that the encoder supports your selected YouTube ingest protocol and, for RTMPS, can satisfy the endpoint and TLS/SNI requirements.
- Test: Run a test stream before relying on the setup, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health information while it is running.
Compare cloud services on the things that affect 24/7 operation
There is no provider-independent guarantee that a cloud service will keep a YouTube stream uninterrupted. These are questions to resolve with each provider, not features to assume are included with a generic virtual machine.

- Continuous execution and recovery: Can the service keep your encoder process running continuously? What happens after an encoder crash, machine restart, or host maintenance event? Are restart controls, process supervision, and health alerts included or do you need to configure them?
- Region and network path: Which available region offers a reliable route to YouTube ingest for your setup? Can you test the actual route and sustained upload performance before committing?
- Transfer charges: How much outbound network transfer is included, and how is additional egress billed? A 24/7 stream sends data continuously, so check the applicable transfer allowance and pricing against your selected bitrate.
- Compute and encoding: Can the machine encode your camera feed at the intended codec, resolution, and frame rate without becoming overloaded? Confirm compatibility and performance with the actual encoder workload.
- Monitoring: Can you inspect the cloud process as well as YouTube’s stream health? YouTube’s LiveStreams API reference describes primary and optional backup ingest addresses and status information that can help diagnose configuration problems.
- Support and service commitments: What support is available if the stream stops, and what written availability or service commitments apply to the specific service and plan?
- Total cost: Add up compute runtime, storage if needed, outbound transfer, support, and any separately billed monitoring or recovery components. Check current vendor pricing and terms directly; cloud costs and terms vary by provider, region, and configuration.
Test the complete path before relying on it
- Build a representative test: Use the intended camera input, encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and cloud region. A test with a different workload may not reveal the same capacity or compatibility issues.
- Measure the cloud-side upload: Confirm sustained capacity to YouTube ingest with headroom above the chosen stream bitrate. YouTube recommends running an upload speed test and testing before the live stream.
- Check YouTube’s stream health: Verify that YouTube receives the stream and reports no configuration issue. If it does, check the encoder settings, ingest protocol, endpoint and application path, and—when using RTMPS—port 443 and TLS/SNI configuration.
- Exercise recovery: Find out how the provider and your process configuration respond to an encoder failure or machine restart. Confirm that alerts reach someone who can act on them; do not infer automatic recovery from the fact that the encoder runs in a cloud machine.
- Review the bill and terms: Compare the expected runtime and outbound transfer with the provider’s current pricing, included allowances, support options, and written service commitments.

Troubleshoot the most common problems
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm that the encoder is running, the stream key is correct, and the selected protocol and ingest endpoint match. For RTMPS, verify port 443 and the TLS host-name/SNI configuration.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Compare the actual encoder bitrate with the selected YouTube recommendation and check whether the cloud machine can sustain the required upload. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the tested path lacks sufficient headroom.
- The stream stops after an error or restart: Check whether the encoder process restarted and whether the cloud service is configured to relaunch it. A virtual machine does not necessarily include process supervision or recovery controls.
- The encoder struggles at the selected quality: Check machine utilization and confirm codec support and encoding capacity for the chosen resolution and frame rate. If necessary, test a lower-compute-demand target such as 720p30.
- The stream is delayed more than expected: Confirm which ingest protocol is in use. HLS and DASH are segment-based and typically have greater latency than RTMPS.
- The bill is higher than expected: Recheck runtime, outbound transfer, included network allowance, storage, and separately billed support or monitoring against the provider’s current pricing and terms.
