Choose a camping blanket by the coverage you need, then compare its fill amount, construction, carry weight, and any stated temperature guidance. Fill power describes how much down lofts per unit of weight; it does not, on its own, tell you how warm a blanket will be. And no blanket works in isolation: your sleeping pad, clothing, shelter, conditions, and personal cold tolerance all affect comfort.
What size camping blanket do you need?
Start with the coverage you want: a close solo wrap, extra room over your shoulders and feet, or enough area to share. Compare the listed length and width with your body and intended use. There is no universal ideal camping-blanket size; products sold under the same category can differ considerably.
For example, Therm-a-Rest lists its Ramble double blanket at 88 × 88 inches, while OneTigris lists its blanket at 76.8 × 52.8 inches unfolded. These are examples, not a complete market comparison or a recommendation that either is best. Check the current manufacturer listing for dimensions before buying.
Match dimensions to the trip
- Solo use: Check that the width lets you wrap or tuck the blanket as you prefer, and that the length reaches the coverage you want.
- Shared use: Look for dimensions that suit both sleepers; a product called “double” is not enough to establish how much usable coverage it provides.
- Backpacking: Weigh coverage against total weight and packed dimensions, when listed. A lighter, smaller blanket may be easier to carry, while a roomier one may be more appealing for car camping. That is a practical trade-off, not a universal manufacturer rule.
Does higher fill power mean a warmer camping blanket?
No—not by itself. Fill power measures the volume that a given weight of down can loft to. Enlightened Equipment explains the measure with this example: one ounce of 850-fill-power down can loft to 850 cubic inches, while one ounce of 950-fill-power down can loft to 950 cubic inches. Its guidance is that “For use in a sleep system, this means that a higher fill power will provide the same insulation using fewer ounces of down.” That is a general explanation of down insulation, not a performance guarantee for a particular blanket.

Fill power and fill weight describe different things: fill power is loft per unit of down weight; fill weight is how much down the product contains. A higher-fill-power blanket may reach a comparable insulation target with less down, but the amount of fill, blanket dimensions, and construction also matter. Compare the whole product rather than ranking warmth by fill power alone.
Why the numbers need context
Therm-a-Rest lists its Ramble double as 650-fill duck down with 1 lb 8 oz of fill, in 88 × 88 inches, and a total product weight of 2 lb 14 oz. OneTigris lists 600 fill power, 300 g of duck down, dimensions of 76.8 × 52.8 inches unfolded, and a product weight of 1.62 lb. Because the blankets differ in size and fill amount—and the listings do not provide directly comparable independent test results—these figures do not establish which blanket is warmer.

How should you interpret a blanket’s temperature rating?
Treat a blanket temperature figure as maker-stated guidance unless the maker explains the test method and what the number represents. For instance, Camplolo lists 39°F as a recommended temperature, while OneTigris states a suitable range of 46°F–77°F. The available product information does not establish a shared standardized testing basis, so these figures are not directly comparable ratings or guarantees of comfort.
Ask whether the maker describes how the temperature claim was determined. If no method is given, treat the number cautiously and do not assume it predicts how warm you personally will feel.

What else affects warmth?
A camping blanket is only one part of a sleep system. Naturehike identifies the sleeping pad, clothing, shelter, humidity, and individual cold tolerance as factors in perceived warmth. Its advice about comfort, limit, and extreme temperature ratings applies to sleeping bags; it does not establish an equivalent rating standard for camping blankets.
Construction and material also matter. A National Disaster Management Authority of Pakistan specification for double-ply fleece blankets notes that insulation depends on thermal resistance and air permeability, not only on blanket weight or raw material. That is general context about blanket insulation, not a camping-blanket rating standard.

What to compare before you buy
