Choose a camera bag by fitting it to the equipment you actually carry—not by liters alone. Measure your longest camera-and-lens setup, compare its dimensions with the bag’s usable interior, then account for other gear, daily essentials, access, comfort, weather protection, and travel needs.

Start with the kit and essentials you carry

List your camera body, the lens usually attached, your longest alternate lens, and the accessories you take on a normal outing. Add any personal items that must share the bag, such as a phone, keys, wallet, water bottle, laptop, lunch, or an extra layer. A camera-capacity claim does not tell you whether those items will fit alongside padded camera compartments.

Plan for the largest camera-and-lens combination you expect to carry. A bag that holds the camera without its usual lens may not work in practice, and a layout that fits the camera but leaves no space for the rest of your kit may not suit your routine.

How to measure your camera and lens for a bag

  1. Measure the assembled camera. Measure the longest body-and-lens combination you plan to carry, with the lens attached. Use its length, width, and height to rule out bags that are too small.
  2. Check the listed interior dimensions. Compare the laid-out kit with the bag’s internal length and width, and check height for tall equipment. Lowepro recommends checking dimensions against the real equipment rather than relying on a volume rating alone: Lowepro’s bag-fit guide.
  3. Choose an orientation and opening. Decide whether you need the camera to lie horizontally for side access or can store it upright. A deeper compartment may let lenses stand vertically. Confirm that the opening supports the way you intend to remove and replace the camera.
  4. Arrange the rest of the kit. Sketch the layout or test it with your actual gear. Check that dividers can separate items without blocking access, and that accessories and personal essentials have designated space.
  5. Test the fit if possible. Take your gear to a camera shop and try it in the bag. If that is not possible, use the manufacturer’s exact interior measurements and verify the opening, orientation, and divider layout before buying.

Why liters do not tell the whole story

Padding and divider systems occupy space, so two bags with similar external dimensions can offer different usable capacity. Lowepro illustrates this with a fully padded 25 L bag and an unpadded 35 L bag that are about the same size externally; the padding accounts for the capacity difference. Treat liters as a rough comparison, not proof that your equipment will fit. Check both internal and external dimensions and plan around the objects you will carry.

Choose the carrying style for your load and routine

Bag type Best suited to Tradeoff to consider
Shoulder or messenger bag Daily carry, a smaller equipment set, quick access, and selected personal items Convenient access and multipurpose pockets, but shoulder carry may be less comfortable for a heavy kit over long periods.
Sling Moving a compact kit around the body and bringing it forward for access Fast access, but less capacity and load distribution than a larger backpack.
Holster One camera with its most-used lens attached Snug fit and easy access, with little room for a larger kit. Size it for your usual camera-and-lens combination.
Backpack Larger equipment loads and travel or activity use More carrying capacity and support; the stated volume still does not establish fit, so check dimensions and layout.
Roller Moving a large, heavy collection of gear Reduces the need to carry the whole load on your back, but size and airline handling matter.
Pouch or insert A compact kit or extra protection inside a larger everyday bag Flexible and compact, but limited in capacity. A loose pouch lets gear move; an overly tight one can strain closures and seams.

These are workflow choices rather than an objective ranking. Compare how each candidate fits your largest camera-and-lens setup, remaining gear and essentials, access needs, loaded comfort, protection, travel dimensions, and budget. For advice on bag styles and carrying considerations, see Manfrotto’s camera-bag buying guide.

Check padding and protection for expected conditions

Padded dividers can cushion equipment against knocks and keep items organized. Look for a divider arrangement that separates the camera, lenses, and accessories without making the intended layout awkward. A rain cover can help in wet conditions, but weather resistance is not the same as waterproofing. For time around water, REI advises considering an additional waterproof bag or hard case; its guidance also covers bag styles and adjustable dividers: REI’s camera bag buying guide.

Check packed dimensions before flying

If you plan to take the bag as cabin baggage, compare its packed exterior dimensions with the airline’s current rules. Check the carrier directly, especially for low-cost and regional airlines, because requirements vary and can change. Include anything attached outside—such as a tripod or bottle—when considering the bag’s effective profile. Lowepro also recommends checking the airline’s limits rather than assuming a bag will qualify based on its category or capacity: Lowepro’s bag-fit guide.

Use an insert if you prefer your everyday bag

A camera pouch or insert can add protection inside a backpack or other bag you already use. Lowepro says its pouches can carry compact cameras and small items such as batteries and memory cards, and advises against choosing one so large that the camera bounces or so small that it strains zippers and seams. The right size depends on the camera and items you intend to place inside. See Lowepro’s guide to camera pouches and cases.
