A discounted older model can cost less today but leave you with fewer supported years; a higher-priced phone may offer better value if you can use it securely for longer.
Set your budget and market first
Decide what you can spend in total, and compare prices where you will actually buy. Include any required plan, activation charge, or other fee rather than treating a monthly payment as the full cost. Prices and availability vary by country and retailer, so a deal reported in one market is not a reliable price guide elsewhere.
Phone costs may face upward pressure, but forecasts are not proof that every handset has already become more expensive. An issuer annual report dated March 31, 2026, quoted Counterpoint Research forecasts of memory prices rising an additional 40% through Q2 2026, bill-of-material costs increasing 8% to more than 15%, average selling prices rising 6.9%, and global smartphone shipments declining 2.1% year over year. These are projections, not observed final 2026 results. The report also said phones priced below $150 accounted for nearly 60% of African smartphone volumes and 30% of Indian volumes in 2025, and expected economic pressure on that tier. Read the report.
Those figures describe broad market expectations, not the price of a specific phone in your area. Use your own market’s current listings to set a realistic shortlist.

Compare security support remaining, not just the promise
Find the manufacturer’s support policy for the exact model and work out how much support will remain on your purchase date. A stated support period may begin at launch, so buying an older model late in its life can leave you with fewer update years than buying a newer phone with a similar headline promise. Check what the policy covers, including security updates, and verify the model-specific dates with the manufacturer.
- Identify the exact model. Check the model name and variant on the listing; similar names can refer to different releases or editions.
- Find the manufacturer’s policy for that model. Look for the support start point and the promised end date or duration, not a brand-wide generalization.
- Calculate remaining support. Compare the stated end date with when you expect to buy. If the policy gives a duration from launch, subtract the time already elapsed.
- Compare like with like. Put the remaining supported years beside the full cost of each phone, including required plan costs or fees.
Which? reports that support periods begin at launch and illustrates why price alone can mislead. Its UK example describes a Pixel 9 with seven years of security updates, a six-month average price of £789, and a six-month low of £399. Those are source-time UK figures, not a current quote or a recommendation for other markets; check the exact model, current listing, and remaining support before buying. See Which?’s example.
Which? also illustrates cost per year of safe ownership with an £850 phone and seven years of support (£121 a year) versus a £280 phone and two years of support (£140 a year). This is arithmetic for that example, not a universal measure or a current market average. Your own calculation should use the price you will pay and the support time that remains when you buy. Choose features around what you actually do
A low price is useful only if the phone handles your normal workload. Consider the features that affect your day-to-day use, rather than treating one specification—such as RAM or camera megapixels—as a complete measure of value.

- Everyday performance: Think about whether you mainly browse, message, stream, navigate, or use demanding apps and games. Seek model-specific testing when speed matters; no single spec tells the whole story.
- Storage: Estimate how many apps, photos, videos, and downloads you keep. Check the capacity of the exact listing and whether it meets your habits.
- Battery and charging: Consider how long you need to go between charges, whether you can charge during the day, and what charging method or speed you need.
- Camera and display: Match these to your own priorities—such as taking family photos, reading outdoors, or watching video—rather than assuming headline megapixels or screen size alone predict the experience.
- Network and ecosystem: Check compatibility with your carrier and the networks available where you live. Account for operating-system and accessory needs if you rely on a particular ecosystem.
Decide between new, discounted, and used
Use the same comparison for every candidate: total cost in your market, remaining security support, suitability for your tasks, and—if it is used—condition and buyer protections. Which? estimates an average smartphone lifetime of 5.6 years from its analysis of recent product surveys; that is an estimate, not a guarantee for an individual device. Buy new when support and certainty matter most
A new phone can make sense if its remaining support, features, and full cost fit your budget. Compare its actual support runway with that of discounted alternatives; new does not automatically mean better value if the model is near the end of its promised support period.

Consider a discounted older model carefully
A discount can be worthwhile if the exact model still has enough support time for your planned ownership and meets your needs. Check the launch date and support end point before letting the size of the markdown decide for you.
Check refurbished and second-hand phones before paying
Used devices may lower the upfront cost, but condition and performance vary. Before purchase, check:

- the seller’s device grading and what each grade means;
- battery health or the seller’s stated battery condition;
- warranty length and what it covers;
- return terms and the process for reporting a fault;
- carrier, regional, and network compatibility; and
- the model’s remaining security support.
If any of these details are unclear, ask the seller before you buy and compare the answers with the price difference against a new phone.

For each shortlisted model, write down its full cost, supported time remaining at purchase, and the features that matter to you. For a used phone, add the condition, warranty, and return terms. Choose the least expensive option that meets your needs and leaves a support period you consider acceptable—not simply the lowest sticker price.
