Choose a breast cancer charity by deciding first what you want your donation to do: fund research, support prevention and awareness, or help people living with a diagnosis. Then compare charities pursuing similar aims using evidence about their programs, public financial and governance records, and the exact terms of the appeal. No single rating or overhead figure can identify the best charity for every donor.
What kind of work do you want your donation to support?
Breast cancer charities do different kinds of work, so start with the outcome that matters to you. Research funders support studies; prevention and awareness organizations work on education, risk factors, or campaigning; and support-focused charities may provide information, peer support, or practical and emotional help after diagnosis. Some organizations combine several of these activities.
Compare organizations with similar missions before weighing their finances. A research grant-maker, a direct-service provider, and an advocacy group have different activities and cost structures. For illustrative UK profiles, CharityCompare describes Against Breast Cancer as research-focused, Breast Cancer Now as combining research, information, support, and campaigning, and Breast Cancer UK as emphasizing prevention education, risk-factor research, and campaigning. These examples are not endorsements or a comprehensive list. See the CharityCompare profiles.
How can you tell whether a charity’s programs are making a difference?
Look for a defined goal, the people or places reached, the reporting period, and evidence of what changed. Check whether figures count unique people, repeat contacts, or activities. An organization’s own impact report can be informative, but distinguish it from an independent evaluation and read any stated limitations.

For research
Find out what questions the charity funds, how it selects grants, what findings have been published, and whether it follows up after projects. A grant award shows that funding was provided; it does not, by itself, establish a treatment breakthrough. Research can take time to translate into patient benefit.
For prevention and awareness
Check whom a campaign is intended to reach and how the organization assesses results. Views, leaflets, or event attendance show activity or reach, but do not alone demonstrate that cancers were prevented or that health outcomes changed.

For support services
Check which services are available, where they operate, who is eligible, whether a referral is required, and how service users’ experiences and follow-up are assessed. A service’s practical value depends partly on whether the people it is meant to help can access it.

Which financial and governance records should you check?
The National Cancer Institute recommends checking whether a cancer fundraising organization publishes its budget and complete annual report, including an independent certified public accountant’s audit. Its donor checklist also asks whether fundraising and administrative costs are reasonable, fundraising methods are ethical and economical, management is transparent, and the organization distributes accurate information. Read the National Cancer Institute’s donor guidance.

Use a charity’s own disclosures alongside the relevant regulator’s records, where available. For example, Breastcancer.org identifies itself as a federally recognized 501(c)(3) and posts audited financial statements and IRS Forms 990 for fiscal years 2023–2025 on its financials page. Those records let donors examine the underlying disclosures rather than relying only on a summary rating.
How should you compare a charity’s finances?
Compare figures from the same reporting year and account for the kind of work each organization does. Income, expenditure, reserves where disclosed, and operating costs can help you understand an organization’s finances, but they do not measure its impact. A low overhead ratio alone does not prove that a charity produces better results; missing data does not mean spending was zero.

What can charity ratings tell you—and what can’t they?
Charity evaluators can help you screen for filings, audits, governance, and disclosure, but their scores reflect particular methods and dated information. Check the current profile and, where possible, the primary filings and program evidence behind it.

How do you verify the charity and donation terms?
Before paying, confirm the registered name, charity number where applicable, official contact details, appeal, and payment destination. Similar names, local branches, and international affiliates may be separate legal entities. Use an official, trusted donation link and retain the confirmation.
- Check whether the gift is unrestricted or limited to a named appeal.
- Read what restrictions apply and what happens if the charity changes its plans.
- Confirm whether the donation is one-time or starts a recurring commitment.
A quick comparison checklist
- Purpose: Does the organization fund research, prevention, education, support, advocacy, or a combination?
- Evidence: Does its reporting explain the work, who benefits, the period covered, and results or limitations?
- Accountability: Can you find its registration, financial filings, audit, governance information, and relevant evaluator disclosures?
- Access: Where does it operate, and who can use its programs or services?
- Gift terms: Is the donation restricted, conditional, or recurring?
- Financial context: Are the figures dated, comparable, and interpreted in light of the organization’s work?
The examples here cover US and UK organizations and records; they are not a worldwide ranking or a comprehensive comparison of all breast cancer charities. Programs, filings, ratings, and donation terms can change, so verify current details with the charity and the appropriate regulator before giving.
